GloriousEggroll has already found a workaround. This worked for me. You know this will just be patched into GE. "the gist is: install the trial delete the trial game folder install standalone via lutris symlink the standalone game folder to the trial game folder's location launch the trial using NOSTEAM=1 %COMMAND% in steam — "
Hi. You wonder here why the game devs (or executives, we might suspect) want you to run these games on windows instead of linux. While I cannot prove this, it is my theory that this is because they can mine very much more data from you using telemetry on windows than they can on linux. So as Cicero said in ancient Rome, always ask the question "Cui bono?" "Who benefits?" Nice video, thanks.
FFXIV does not have native Linux support. Thus, they have no obligation to make sure a change won't break Linux compatibility. Being able to play through Proton, WINE, does not change that.
The privacy, configurability and the freedom Linux brings comes at the cost of far less developer support. And it's a known cost. That's the trade-off. Can't have it both ways.
When people say "I'd like to switch to Linux, but there's software I can't replace that only runs on Windows", they're told "Dualboot Windows and just log in to it for that software". Best advice is to take their own own advice and do the same for gaming.
By the by, I've seen several posts on ProtonDB that show people finding work-arounds to get XIV to run still. Maybe go check that out.
If Linux users want to see support added, then come together as a group and petition SE – politely – to please add it. But the thrashing and whining I see on forums and elsewhere is really ugly, and completely unjustified. Linux users aren't owed anything.

Did you manage to find a solution?
