P.S. I do truly hope that WoW can turn it around, especially after the announcement of the Microsoft / Xbox acquisition. I spent 16 years there and would like to feel good about playing it again, but in good conscience I can’t support Activision Blizzard until they create a better work culture, start treating their employees with respect, and start listening to their players.

  1. You’ll be happy to know about how much damage this “arthas” trailer has done to the WoW community as a whole. They have severely insulted for some the only reason to play Wrath classic or something again. To see that this is what became of him. A little puff ball while sylvanas lectures him in front of all of his beloveds. His son. Loved and mentor. Humiliating
    Stomach wrenching

  2. "Children of the land, do you hear

Echoes of truths that once rang clear?

    Two souls intertwined

One true love they did find

    Bringing land and heavens near"

If only Blizzard would stop copying others and even attempt to be as creative as those lyrics…

  3. For that last part, I heard a certain scene was suspiciously similar to a very important endwalker scene as well. I saw a bunch of comparisons and then suddenly they were gone so I'm not sure.

  4. So this… this was their ending… this horrible, incorrigible curmudgeon… uh ugh oomph. This is really pitiful. It can't come close to how Heavensward was written in no less than two years since they remade ARR. This is just horrible 😢. Definitely not worth playing it.

Side note: I can understand Preach's sentiment when he says in an alternate timeline he would be bitching about ZM but instead he'd play FFXIV because it's a more friendly approach. This thing they call a story, it is a lot worse than an airport novel you pick up and they have some substance.

  5. At 1:52 – I still tear up over this.
This story and so many others in FFXIV, are the sort that edifies. They stick with you, remind you of truth, reinforce humanity. Heavy stuff, sometimes.
Whereas Brand B…plagiarism much? I mean, seriously–Arthas? a King Arthur rip off, and the mash-up of borrowed lore just went on from there.

  6. The scene in HW serves as a reminder that war is not always about grandeur, glory and victory, that it steeps in tragedy for the innocent that is swept along with it. The dragonsong is an echo of that, asking why do we fight despite all the losses, the family and friends we lost along the way and never to forget about them at journey's end.

  7. Eh. While it is sus, it's also a very common "problem" in story telling; it's constantly borrowing from itself. Like, does anyone actually realize how often the story of robinhood is used actively in media on an average? Music also does this. Often times it's not even done on purpose for a lot of the creative process is finding inspiration around us that affects how you tell your story.

This reminds me of Final Fantasy, but to say that it copied it? Nah. It's trying to be dramatic and sappy for sure, but I mean… It's not like Final Fantasy has a patent on the concept of the dead coming back to give moral and spiritual support to drive back corruption… The problem isn't the scene, but the fact they ruined the build up. Once
that happens the climax means nothing. If they didn't butcher years of hard work of the original developers and writers, maybe this would hit differently. (On a side not, I do understand the current teams desire to branch off and do something truly built by them. They inherited a story after all. I get it. However, there are ways to make your mark without completely destroying the foundation from which you are building on. )

to be fair, I haven't played this game since Legion and haven't had the energy to keep up with it (because it's sad.. And boring… So many missed opportunities for good story telling). Point is, I think it's an unfortunate coincidence. It feels like copying, but you're just noticing a trope which are found EVERYWHERE in writing. Some are just used more than others.

  8. "Undone by mortal will. Whiter now…?" This is what Nidhogg spoke at the end of the Heavensward scene here (the text didn't appear so I figure I'd point it out.)

I'm no WoW player and I don't want to assume I know anything about the lore but I'm a bit shocked that Arthas basically was not allowed to say anything. Sure it was implied that there was almost nothing of Arthas left besides whatever that orb or soul or whatever, but for someone who had power over death itself (to my limited knowledge) you'd think the people would want to hear at least one last thing from him before his supposed final moments of existence if it had to come to this.

  9. So thats the end cinematic of how Anduin breaks free… just like that…? I mean, I suppose we defeated him in the raid fight before that, but still… And Arthas being reduced to a floating cotton ball, not even a vision of him… Sure, they give an explanation that there wasnt much left of him after the forges… but reducing the most iconic character in WoW to a fickle cotton ball after the hype from the introduction cinematics… … This is so sad 🙁

  10. Man, watching that heavensward scene does bring back the feels. The WOW cutscene just doesn't resonate with me. Probably because I have no emotional attachment to anything related to the shadowlands. But also, they did not do Arthas justice. His end should have stayed in wotlk
