  1. The Combat gets faster at endgame, but that also depends on the class. Dark Knight for example has a lot of "double weaving" meaning you have 2 skills to press between your global cooldowns. So maybe you would enjoy that job more. But yeah, until you get your full tool set FFXIV is quite slow.

  2. It has already been mentioned. But FFXIVs combatsystem is based around GCD (Global CoolDown) skills as well as Off GCD. Most classes, once they get a couple of skills, keep a rotation of GCD while using oGCD skills inbetween. Sometimes it's proccs, sometimes it's just a secondary rotation. Or something else in some cases. So that is why the combat in general feels a lot slower in FFXIV early on.

That being said, despite being a FFXIV player who left WoW a while ago I still prefer the general feel of combat in WoW. I just prefer almost everything else in FFXIV over WoW.

  3. im a Vet WoW player and a Vet FFXIV player and i have to say combat early game in FFXIV is yes indeed a lot slower than WoW, but once you have your actual skill set with the OGCD and the GCD skills, combat is a lot faster.. Most classes actually dont pick up until lvl 70 in terms of spd and their feeling/fluidity.

If i were to compare Vanilla WoW to FFXIV ARR (realse) ….. Vanilla combat is SOOOOOOO much worse, so much slower.

In terms of your tanking in FFXIV, looking at what you have done in comparison… you comparing your (just finished HW tanking experience) to your current content Shadowlands WoW Paladin.. So when you get into and complete Shadowbringers in FFXIV which is the current content until Nov when we get Endwalker, i would then compare it, because right now you are comparing 2nd expansion completion out of 4 (1/2 way mark FFXIV), to your Max level WoW. Its basically like Comparing BC to Shadowlands, in which case, Talents, pretty bad combat, to what you have now.

  4. Maybe its slower to balance all the mechanics? But- you will def wipe if you dont dodge. as a tank you can take more punishment, but if you push the healer too much by consistently not dodging it will enter a rupture point.

  5. In xiv most tanks get to the place where they do "wall to wall pulls" grabbing every add you can till you hit a barrier you can't pass till the adds are dead. It speeds things up and spices up the play

  6. I'm a tank main in FFXIV, specifically Gunbreaker. I used to play WoW back in the way from Vanilla up to Cata release, I have dipped back in to check the state of the game every now and again to see if anything has changed and how. Compared to FFXIVs methodical combat, WoW is consistently fast in terms of CPM (Casts per minute) but FFXIV is faster than WoW in bursts on a lot of the jobs. It goes back to that methodical combat where each job will have a clean rotation of skills used leading up to burst phases. Every 30 seconds a gunbreaker has a mini-burst phase where you weave, or double weave, (using 1-2 extra skills between each GCD). And every minute is the true GNB burst phase where you can empower your damage with a 20s buff… The idea being you want to do everything you have, apply both your dots, do a full burst combo within this 20s window. The pace of XIV combat rhythmically ebbs and flows, some jobs on a 60s burst, some 90, other 2 minutes. Which means that the opener, the 6 minute mark and the 12 minute mark in a long fight (raids or trials), everyone is popping off and there are shared buffs going around for the group burst phases. Bosses are designed with all of this in mind to provide you with opportunity, or challenge you to get this phase in while doing tricky mechanics.

  7. Just to put into perspective, the max level was 50 at the time of ARR. Back then, we had a thing called a shared skills or sub job abilities where it barrowed many of the attacks from other classes and jobs you have leveled. We had way more spells and skills compared to what it is at lv50 today. Around Stormblood launch, we had a major overhaul on lower job/class abilities to what you see today. Why? A lot of folks at WoW often forget that this is also on the console with full controller support. In order to accommodate for that platform, many of the skill/spells that were redundant or seldom used were either replaced, truncated, or basically removed all together. This left a lot of gaps in toolkits for lv1 to lv50. As you may heard it many times, the game comes together around lv60 and beyond. At max level, you'll have proper AOE combos plus more oGCD in between. Only then, people will understand why FFXIV has 2.5 GCD.

  8. Combat has been getting faster and faster with each expansion. They have even removed full mechanics to make it faster. I do agree with a lot of what you said. But at 70-80, tanking REALLY starts to shine.

  9. Wows trash actually does a lot at least in legion, bfa, and shadowlands. However, its not as flashy, and it can be ignored most of the time until you get to higher keystone levels

  10. I also feel that tanking in FF14 feels more akin to what tanking was like in WOTLK in WoW in that you pretty much just grabbed a bunch of mobs and didn't use crowd control. Aggro was also not an issue in WoW WOTLK and that made tanking more newb friendly to those that generally wouldn't tank either because there is one less major thing to worry about (aggro).

  11. The things that you are noticing are the little things that added to players adopting the big pull style of play in ffxiv dungeons. After you do enough dungeon runs, you will memorize where your big pulls will occur.

As far as tanking bosses, I adore tanking trails. I hate tanking dungeons haha.

Edit: from 2.0 on, we can see how SE designs all the trials with the idea of making every job move. The idea of just standing still and dpsing is unheard-of. That level of engagement hooks a lot of players.

  12. The difference between wow and ffxiv that I've seen, is when you move up from one difficulty to another in a trial, it's not simply the boss hitting harder, having more HP and or defense, but the mechanics change, making a fight MUCH more difficult. Dungeons are the same, there are normal and hard mode, and the normal vs hard modes are almost entirely different dungeons.

  13. I hope u push atleast lvl 70 as this is when u get so many abilities that the gcd doesnt matter as u keep weaving a tonne of ogcds I was initially annoyed by the gcd but I am lvl 80 atm and I am am constantly hoping for some breathing space as there are so many buttons that I keep pressing and weaving, other than that hope u are enjoying the game m8

  14. Why aren't you using Reprisal, Rampart, or Arm's Length? They're some of your best damage mitigation. They're also OGCD so you have something to press between attacks. When you get your magic phase, you won't have the MP for Clemency anymore.

  15. I dont think high end content in FFXIV would even be playable if the GCD was as low as WoW's. Trials and raid bosses are constantly throwing stuff at you and youre almost always in motion. And generally speaking, mistakes in both boss mechanics and rotations are punished harder. Most rotations are pretty tight in FFXIV, while WoW's are largely proc/priority based at the current point of the game.

WoW is more fluid and spontaneous in terms of both boss mechanics (where there are fewer patterns that can be learned and things are more reactive) and rotations. FFXIV is generally a lot more tightly choreographed on both fronts, and it's more demanding in some ways, but can be memorized in a way WoW fights cant be

  16. I find a lot of WoW tanks that came over to XIV for some reason pull single groups at a time, making the dungeons just wildly longer and more boring. Came to check out this video to see why but still haven’t been able to figure out the cultural ranking difference

  17. Everyone talking shit about how slow FFXIV gcd is and that is true . Back in arr it is very sloowwww …. However the mechanics make them fit perfectly . I would call it " ninja" meta since the trick atk come out . Every single job rotation has to base on ninja rotation.
