  1. Having recently started making my way through classic final fantasy (n this case, 1, 2, and 4 with 3 a work in progress), it's really neat to be able to go back through some of my memories of playing this game and actually get some of the references now.

  2. Omega is one of my fav since quests in the whole game.
    sick fights, great story/humor
    .
mild spoiler beyond about the characters i love in this side story:
and i've bought the alpha plushie because i loved that character so much….
but that isn't to say that cid, nero, and jessie aren't also fantastic
cid and nero have old married couple entergy, and jessie loves alpha to death, it's delightful

  3. Happy Canadian Thanksgiving, Playfriends! Today, Durmin is delving into what is considered the 2nd most important 12 player raid in the game (the 2st being the Binding Coils of Bahamut). This questline is written by Natusko Ishikawa, who will go on to helm the lead writer position for the next two expansions! This is your spoiler free lore comment!

Wedge fills us in, Omega seems to have won the fight against Shinryu, but there are a new set of complications. Well, complications other than Cid and Nero's little spat. There's a lot of aether in the impact site. And Midgardsormr recognizes the taste of this aether.

11:45 – Say hello to the most adorable character in FFXIV. This Chocobo is based on the design of Final Fantasy's Chocobo Mystery Dungeon. These are a series of dungeon rougelikes, with a cute an fun protagonist, a chocobo!

16:30 – Until this moment, the game and the player base have described Omega as an "Allagan Weapon". This is both accurate and misleading. Everyone has labored under the presumption that Omega was a Weapon developed and employed by the Allagans. Midgardsormr and Nero have determined the truth: the Allangans used the Omega Weapon in their conquest of Meracydia, but did not create it. If anything, their work at understanding Omega lead to many of their technological developments, and likely inspired the Ultima Weapon. What's more is that Midgardsormr indicates that Omega is not of terrestrial origin.

20:00 – And we get a name for our cute buddy! Alpha!

20:45 – INFORMED consent! It's vital! But Omega doesn't play by any rules of ethics. Looks like we're in for a tournament arc.

26:15 – Note that Nero has a Garlean Gunblade here. As a tribunus of the XIV Legion, he no doubt was gifted one as part of his service, but this also means he will be using the typical Garlean animations for these fights, rather than his custom ones.

Dan covers most of this in his gameplay, but I figured I'd list out the references for the 4 fights today.

If you're not familiar with FFV, Faris (the character who is being cosplayed) is a pink haired pirate who joins the protagonists.

The first fight is Alte Roite, based on a boss from Final Fantasy's V's final dungeon. But FFV players may recall that Alte Roite was depicted as a wizened old mage. This form is taken for the monster he turns into when defeated, Jura Aevis.

The second fight is Catastrophe, which is also a boss in FFV, blocking the route to the interdimensional castle (which is the basis for the Deltascape 'layout'). Catastrophe generally appears as it did in FFV. This is a return of the duty action button, which will show up increasingly from this point on, being context sensitive to the duty you're in.

Nero's story points that the events of FFV may have actually happened several millennia ago, but may be nothing more than a fable. Midgardsormr views Omega as nothing more than glorified chatbot, digesting what exists and regurgitating it. Albeit a chatbot that seems eager to kill.

Again for FFV newcomers, the Lenna that is being cosplayed is Princess Lenna Tycoon, one of the protagonists. And yes, it looks like Lenna as a Dancer has a flower in her hair.

The third fight is Halicarnassus, again based on a FFV boss, one of the Demons of the Rift. Halicarnassus is the name of the Greek city that is now Bodrum, Turkey.

The final fight is Exdeath, the big bad of FFV. Not a whole lot to say here, you're running a bunch of the baddies from FFV, of course the last one would be the main antagonist. The "great tree" backstory is part of Exdeath's origin in FFV.

I do want to bring up Dan's explanations of Pyretic and Freeze. These are important debuffs that will be reoccurring in the game. Pyretic is particularly important because it deals damage to you based on the actions you take, so dealing a bunch of damage can kill you. Even auto attacks hurt. The issue is that the attack that applies the Pyretic or Freeze conditions differ in the fights, and can sometimes only be realized if you look at the debuff after the attack. For me, the easiest method of identifying Pyretic or Freeze are to see when the debuff is applied or falls off, as there is text stating what the debuff is.

1:18:35 – These are called "Flare" markers by the community, and they will do damage based on your proximity to the marker, and amplified by their proximity to each other. As Dan says, run away.

1:29:55 – Jessie is right! And she knows that everyone will love Alpha! And she's RIGHT!

Well, if Omega wanted to fill us with both dread and determination, this is one way to do it. No one is safe from Omega's minions, so Durmin dances to its tune, for now. This also explains why Durmin was pitted against FFV's villains. It was testing to see if Durmin had the special attributes that a hero would have, much like the protagonists of FFV, and now it has its answer.

1:38:45 – This is a low blow for Nero. In a tad bit of spoilers, the Bozja Incident, which Cid's father Midas helmed, destroyed the city state of Bozja and took the lives of everyone in it. The technology at Bozja was the precursor to what would be used by the VIIth Legion in 1.0 and brought down the moon Dalamud, causing the 7th Umbral Calamity. So yeah, Cid's change of view in the wake of the Bozja incident shouldn't be surprising.

Next time, it's back for more tournament shenanigans and Final Fantasy references!

PS: There's a new Playframe Pin, and it's Snack Mage! The symbol looks a lot like an inverted Scholar symbol, but it is in fact a pretzel!

  4. Funfact about "Alte Roite". The name was created through multiple translation mistakes. Originally the name was supposed to be the German translation of the Japanese word of "old man" or "old person" (probably 老人), because one of its forms is that of an old man. But then the first mistake was from Japanese to German where the wrong translation was chosen and "person" then instead became "people" (Japanese most of the time doesn't have a plural). So now the German words they chose as its name was "Alte Leute" or "old people". This phrase at least was then correctly transliterated into Japanese as "アルテロイテ". However then the translation team from Japanese to English made the second mistake. They for one reason or another didn't realize it was supposed to be German so they just phonetically transliterated it into English which is how we got "Alte Roite".

So the whole journey of the name's creation is "old person(老人 or similar)"->"alte Leute(old people)"-> "アルテロイテ"->"Alte Roite"

  5. From now on, three of the Savage fights of each 8-man raid have an extra little twist.
SPOILERS for today's episode and for the Savage version of these fights:

After you initially defeat the boss, the fight continues. This applies to all future 8-man raid fights for the Savage versions of the fourth, eighth and twelfth fights. Depending on the fight, you will either have to deal with a phase 2 for the existing boss, or a "new" boss that starts at 100% HP. Omega Deltascape V4.0 Savage features the latter – after Exdeath is pulled into the void at the end of the fight, he is reborn as Neo Exdeath, the final boss of Final Fantasy V (regular Exdeath being the semifinal boss), with an appearance based off of said final boss, and a music track remixed from the relevant final boss theme from FFV. Note that wiping to this phase of the fight will reset the fight to the beginning of phase 2 – you don't need to worry about having to do phase 1 again. As such, if party members are suffering from rez weakness, or have their opener abilities on cooldown, parties will oftentime purposely wipe to reset these – in an arena such as this one, this can be accomplished by having everyone just jump off the edge.

  6. Weirdly Halicarnassus is also a boss from Haukke Manor
It's the voidsent that was manipulating the owner of the manor, she only shows up in the hard mode revisit
In there she has more of a succubus design and not the classical ffv one

  7. About the magitek terminal at the end, I know this was recorded months ago and this comment is unlikely to affect anything at all, but there is actual interesting lore stuff in the Omega Records. It's not just a summary of what you've been doing in the raids themselves like the goblin journal in Alexander was.

Here's a transcript of the records unlocked after clearing Deltascape.

    Technologist Record I:
<blip> <buzz> I leave this record in hopes that future generations may have a window into the past. I am a technologist of the Allagan Empire, charged with conducting aetherochemical research. Owing to the classified nature of this information, I am unable to disclose my identity. Lest you are unfamiliar, aetherochemistry is a wondrous field of science established by none other than the great Emperor Xande, who reigned until some 170 years ago. In his boundless wisdom, he shone the light of science upon the enigma that was magic, and exploited such discoveries as were made for the betterment of the realm. Since its inception, aetherochemistry has blessed Allag with unprecedented prosperity. Such prosperity as could be believed to endure for millennia─nay, for eternity. While Emperor Xande's contribution to the science was immeasurable, we technologists who follow in his footsteps have also done our part for progress. Our greatest breakthrough came twenty years ago, when we finally succeeded in activating the weapon. At first, it communicated in some unknown language. As if sensing our confoundment, it began to acquire our tongue. In mere moments, it mastered it. And it called itself Omega.

    Technologist Record II:
<blip> <buzz> We first discovered Omega some one hundred years prior. It was excavated from deep within the earth, where it had lain for veritable eons as though a fossil. Soil samples collected at the site told a startling tale: Omega originates not from this star. Yet another source of mystery was its condition. Among the many scars it bore, there were those that could not be explained by its impact with the ground alone. At the emperor's behest, we studied Omega intensely and in secret. Nigh everything about it was beyond the comprehension of our sciences, and it instilled us with fear and awe of what lies beyond the skies. But then came a momentous discovery: Omega was ever so slowly repairing itself by absorbing the surrounding aether! There we found a common ground with aetherochemistry, and set about expediting Omega's repairs by infusing it with aether. In the course of observing the process, we attained many cues that gave rise to myriad new techniques. And then, within my generation, we succeeded in awakening that which had long lain dormant: Omega's behavioral systems, or its consciousness, if you will. While its functions are yet limited, it is fully capable of communication. It has even begun forging for itself a face, as if seeking to bridge the gap between us. Truly, Omega is a miracle of technology! Its discovery has advanced our civilization hundreds of years, and given time it will advance it hundreds of years more! Through our research, the Empire's star will rise to heretofore unimaginable heights. Indeed, I envy the generations to come, who will live to glory in the realm at her zenith. Glory be to Allag! Long may she endure!

  8. Is this the first time the harder version of the fight (savage) has a completely new boss?
After you beat exdeath in savage mode you have to beat neo exdeath
There's a checkpoint between phases but but you have to beat before the game boots you out to get any reward

  9. – Hooray Durmin is back & ready to do some marriage counseling!
    – oh hey is the Chobobo GP, quick! end it before it sells you Microtransactions at criminal prices
    – we interrupt you Final Fantast 14 to bring you ExoPrimal, no really that's basically the plot of the game

  10. I have listened to the Lochs' theme at least 25 times since the last episode. Probably many more than that, I just typed "the lochs" into my browser history since I listened to them through youtube, and that won't track the times I just restarted the video without leaving the page.

  11. It seems like only yesterday this journey started delivering cookies and other snacks. So far have we come that Dan has gotten ME into ffxiv, and now there's one more xaela running around. Now finally catching up to Durmin and in a weird twist of fate not only maining red mage, but sporting an attire eerily close to Durmin's red mage attire. Small world.

  12. Forgot how cutscene heavy the Omega raids were. I believe they're the only raid series to include solo duties as part of the unlock process? Anyway, as I have not played a single FF game that came out before XIV, I appreciate the small little context about the bosses that Dan provides. I knew of Exdeath, but that's it. And that Omega voice he's doing is great. Getting a lot of a soundboard, I imagine?

  13. The selection of bosses here felt odd to me, because I didn't actually remember any of them from FFV except for Exdeath. The flying snake I vaguely remembered as the boss of the first dungeon (The final dungeon version is a palette swap), but the other two just drew complete blanks.

However, they sort of painted themselves into a corner in development, because the bosses I do remember had already been used. Karlabos (Karl Boss, for those of us who played the PS1 translation) showed up in Sastasha (Hard), Garula showed up in Bardam's Mettle, and Gilgamesh… is Gilgamesh.

I would, however, have absolutely loved to see the WoL's reaction if you've done Hildibrand and Nero says the next boss is some ancient legend named Gilgamesh.

  14. Goddang Cid and Nero have powerful Divorced energy, it doesn't help that Nero's being so deliberately grating, you just know he spent years perfecting how to annoy Cid into yelling.

I deeply look forward to when the FFV remake on switch goes on sale, I can't wait to rewatch these later and get all the references I missed. Dissidia only tells me so much.

  15. I figure it's just a habit from other games he's played, but I do object a little to Dan referring to the DPS role as "damage dealers" – every job in FFXIV is a damage dealer, DPS just happen to be the best at it. Healers and tanks should ideally be doing as much damage as they can too (and in fact, bosses are balanced around them doing so)

  16. Durmin, dripped out as ever thanks to his fashion godmother.

So, Dan I've had a curiosity in me as of this video. I apologize if someones already asked and I missed it, but with all the Job Changes Durmin goes through, is there one you view as being his Canon class? Or is he as mutable in combat methods as you've played him throughout the series?

  17. 7:06 Perfect reaction.
    10:24 Pin idea: Fashion Mage.
10:53 Ah, the emergency rations have input.
14:52 I can't see this thing and not think "it's Scrubbins, be careful!"
12:24 He's just emergency rations, don't worry about it.
16:36 Of course not, that would be helpful. Something you are not.
19:39 It's like an LED flashlight in here.
34:33 I love the robo-Dan voice. Yay, post!
    36:34 …just a bit long. Almost 1 3/4 hours.
42:08 Jingle!!! I have to give props to T'fadia costume points… because I don't know FF5 enough to comment on cosplay.
45:01 Red Mages do the Zorro slash? Really? I want to be mad.
56:13 "maniacal probe" and floor tentacles just… makes this… yea…
1:01:41 I wonder how much of a spoiler that is… not that I intend to play any FF to date.
1:04:17 I'm sure FF5 fans loved it, as an outsider I can't help but wonder how using late-game bosses, complete with exposition, impacts a fresh player's experience of, in this case, FF5.
1:05:10 Really like Kayako's getup. (No, I didn't get the reference)
1:12:26 Yea, don't know how to feel about this.
1:13:28 make them higher tier enemies? Delta is supposed to be the bottom rung, after all. Also, Lady Jingle is clearly the strongest.
    1:36:09 Props for directness?
1:37:28 Not a game, a science experiment. Difficult to say which is worse, though in this context, the latter.
