  1. My favorite parts of the game:
Dark Knight quest lines that were written by Natsuko Ishikawa, who was also deeply involved with the Shadowbringers and Endwalker storylines.
Nidhogg's trial, when the music swells during the second transition.
Honestly the music in general, some in ARR but Heavensward and beyond especially slaps. Tsukuyomi and Suzaku's trials are pretty rad too.
Fighting an actual train in the Stormblood 8 man raid series.
The moon and all the secrets it contained.
Playing Dancer and learning the fights in the Shadowbringers and Endwalker raids was neat even if stressful since I wasn't a raider really beforehand. Learning the 'dance' of each encounter and the executing it well felt pretty nice, and the boss themes are absolute bangers.
Doing treasure maps with my friends every Tuesday and just relaxing, and just screwing around in PVP with my former raid group is a blast. Visiting friends' house decoration projects.
Hell, even getting stuck in a crafting or fishing groove can be pretty relaxing and zen, especially the loop of Ishgard Restoration / Diadem.

The story in general just grows to have some nice messages about hope and resilience in the face of great adversity too that I felt like I needed at the time. Sure, it does jump through some sometimes ridiculous anime hoops to get to where it wants to go, but the overall tone was just so refreshingly uplifting in the end.

  2. saying that you need to suffer though something to get to the actually good stuff will always be a horrible way to get someone into something. like saying the first 3 episodes of Bojack Horsemen are dog shit but you have to watch them, or you won't like the first 2 seasons of the Orville because it's more of a comedy instead of "real" Star Trek. Just let people enjoy what they enjoy and don't be a needless asshole about it

  3. You know, I think it's funny that you had the same problems I did with this game. Tutorials that feel like a chain around my neck are a great way to make me never want to play the game again.

  4. Appreciate your actual thoughts on this game and I do agree that saying ARR is horrible is something that needs to stop. As well as people keep pestering people non stop and the toxic positivity that the community can have. If I had to choose my favorite Storyline is during the end or A Realm Reborn where you try to help refugees and it all back fires horribly. With all this happening you learn a lesson on being a hero right after you lost someone and the character who flees with you is humbled.

  5. So true about the restriction of classes. To be honest there is one online game that had it where there was 18 different classes and you could choose to change your class anytime you liked unless you were in battle if I remember correctly.

Some of the classes were unique or cliche. I mean one of them was titled Firestarter. But it's been awhile since I've played it. So I don't know how much has changed.

  6. Honestly this is how I feel whenever a new RPG/JRPG comes out and friend's say I should get it.(Or any games that come out for that matter) I have a short attention span and get bored pretty easily or distracted if I feel like it's not engaging enough so I usually don't bother

  7. Now I want narrated summeres of your time playing games. This is fucking amazing and I want more like it.
Fuck you for getting me hooked on something that won't get continued.

  8. A gush if you're still interested.

One thing I like that I think would get you to change your mind (kind of): she doesn't turn evil! There comes a point where the main cast gets a wardrobe change, and they start feeling realized. One guy starts showing up to work in his PJs. Another guy dresses like a steampunk edgelord and adopts a lesbian daughter. Y'shtola (cat lady) dresses like an evil queen. Which dovetails into what I actually love, is that the cast is very colorful and varied, and they really do grow on you throughout the story. We go from feeling like a team to feeling like a family at a certain point.

One thing I like that I just want to talk about: my personal favorite thing to do is gather and craft. Getting to just be in the world is nice for me, and both let me actually engage with it in a way without killing something. Exploring the crafting menu to find cool glamour pieces (transmog armors), and then exploring the world for the rare gathering spots needed to make the stuff, it's all incredibly satisfying. I believe in the world, as extra and over the top as it is, which was a pleasant surprise since I had trouble with stuff like that before 14.

One caveat in case that sounds appealing: it took me weeks to get to the point where I could actually start doing things I enjoyed for their own sake. Realm Reborn slow walks everything, and its story didn't grab me personally. If I weren't playing through it with a friend who already loved the game, I would have given up. In fact, I did: twice before. I really had to stick with it, but I did eventually fall in love.

I would never try to force anyone to play it, and I think those who do are shortsighted. This is a game you need to fall in love with, not marry and then figure it out. If you've read this far, I wanted to thank you for giving it a try despite all that, and thank you again for your kindness. This really was a special video.

  9. It does get annoying when someone uses "it gets really good later" as an argument for why you should watch or play something. It's great if a game or show does continue to only get better, but I don't want to get into it if I don't enjoy the first impressions.

  10. Honestly don't think this is what they were going for, but I've got a handful of disabilities and most MMO's are totally unacessable for me, much as I like SWTOR it's combat is an actively unfun part of it for me. I'm just glad to have an MMO I can actually play, and by the end of ARR the gameplay had gotten to the level where it really engaged me the way I kept hearing MMO combat was supposed to. Not really a commentary on anything, just something I find funny.

  11. I didn't understand a single thing that happened because the tomfoolery was making me laugh too damn hard! Lily, this video was tremendous fun and I would love to see more where you give in to the shitpost energy.

  12. This entire video was a riot! But this is amusing, I didn't know you were the type of person who couldn't find her way out of a maze, on the back of a cereal box, even with a GPS equipped. At least you make up for it with your superhuman snark. I was cackling the entire video.

  13. Spoilers for dark knight job questline. I loved the job quests for the dark knight where you take on tasks to get used to your weapons and powers by a fellow knight named Esteem who seems as tired of the silent Protag role as Lily is, increasingly lashing out and doing that 'don't you just want to go ape shit?' meme but serious until near lvl 70 you learn that noone saw him and heard all his gripes through your character, in reality being all of your character's dark grievances possessing the body of a dead dark knight trying to convince him to ditch the Warrior of Light gig and go commit fully to the murder hobo lifestyle. Best part is when he becomes a boss fight, he introduces himself as "Yourself, Esteem."….your…self,Esteem.

  14. I really enjoyed this video. It'd be a nice treat if you ended up with time to do more videos like this. It's kind of like you mixed In a Minute with Glass of Water to make a free-form, fun "review". I get that you most likely wouldn't have occasion to more like this, but if you were wondering about reception to this type of video, I really enjoyed this. You're hilarious

  15. I didn't get into FFXIV when my friends kept hyping it. Mainly because I couldn't afford a pay-to-play MMORPG where I had to buy expansion packs to keep up. But then my friends stopped preaching it and indeed, stopped playing it. Which was a red flag, in hindsight. Lily's assessment has to clarified things a lot, and I'm so glad I never got into it.

  16. About to go to bed, but this was honestly the best advertisement for this game I've seen, and I have 2 friends who are nuts about this game!
You gave an objective take on the game – positives and negatives – and show what it's like to play while having some sarky fun at it. Meanwhile, the only parts either of them have shown me are endgame raid bosses I can't follow, the character creator and soundtracks, which I think is the least important part of the game, but for some reason, I seem to be in the minority on that one?

  17. my favorite things ever about this game that got me stuck with it compared to other MMOs is the job system and still having a main character that I can be attached to completely. I don't have to make a hundred alts just to try out different jobs.

  18. 17:36 God I feel so seen with this. I've been playing this game for years, and people always look at me like I'm crazy for liking ARR. Sure it's a lot slower than the other expansions, but it also literally sets up most of them: without ARR, none of the other stories would be nearly as impactful. ARR's slow pace is also kinda why I liked the game to begin with. It actually feels like story of growing from humble beginnings, and it's always fun to look back on and see how things have improved or changed in the writing and acting department.

As far as favorite moments go, it's definietly anytime Ryne or Meteion are on screen. They honestly have been the source of many a smile and tear, even if they're not exactly mainstay characters. Meteion specifically made me cry like a bitch in Endwalker (Who would've thought that giving someone flowers and holding someone's hand could be so emotional). As for Ryne, just seeing her grow into her own person and actually experience something of a normal childhood, even for a bit, always made my day.

  19. "When you have to annoy and nag people to play your game, that's generally a red flag that the game isn't actually fun."
Ehh, Yahtzee said basically the same thing after reviewing Demon's Souls, but turns out that being nagged into playing the Souls series is basically the best way to get into it.

  20. Honestly i really love all the dungeons in FF14 but my favorite is this haunted mansion (Haukke Manor) that you visit part of the way through a realm reborn. You fight ghosts and haunted creatures and the boss for that area was really well designed too. I feel like we don't see enough halloween-themed games anymore that aren't just horror and that dungeon scratches that itch perfectly.

The video itself was great too, your narration over the quests was hilarious, and your self-awareness of knowing when you messed up and pushing on anyways was good. Its clear that you really tried to push yourself to enjoy the game and your critiques of its systems make sense. Its just not the game for you because its designed in a way that goes against what you like, and thats totally fine!

  21. The shit I like about 14 is that the specific class fantasy of warrior appeals to me like nothing else.
Just playing it is fun as shit, and it's a blast to do endgame raids with 7 of my stupidest friends and just disregard everything in favor of smacking the bitch ass boss as hard as possible.

As just an explanation, warrior in the lategame is the most defensively capable class, with lifesteal and self-healing out the ass, and the biggest numbers of all the tanks. (though their overall damage is worse than the others because their power is entirely in their 15 second burst)

It's the class that's just like, the least reliant on other people. You dont need a healer, you don't need another tank, and while DPS players kill shit faster, you can out-attrition basically anything that doesn't have an enrage timer. You just pop all of your buffs, walk tits-first into as many enemies as you can find, and come out perfectly fine. The slower rotation that warrior has the few OGCDs let me do callouts for my group without needing to pay any attention to my hotbars, and it's just such a perfect fucking class fantasy for me that I just don't care enough to play anything else after I've levelled it.

It's absolutely not for everyone as you said. It's far and away the slowest job in the game and it has the least amount of mechanical complexity at endgame. But just running into fights stark-ass naked and being a feral little goblin feasting on the blood of your enemies is so fucking fun.

  22. Honestly Lily, this video is giving me more incentive to get back into FF14 than any push from the massive fans. A lotta people feel insecure about their favorite games/shows or whatever and they tell you "just wait until blank, it gets great" but all that makes think is why should I suffer for so long to potentially enjoy something. Just tell me what you like about it and I'll draw my own conclusions. Even though you likely won't continue your journey with the game, I got the vibe that there's a good bit of fun to be had in this game 🙂

  23. Is anyone else really enjoying the fun silliness that lily's videos have been having? Maybe it's because she's finally not in an abusive friend circle/relationship and she might be happy for once but these videos just seem happier 🙂

  24. As a long time Final Fantasy XIV player and viewer of yours ( been around since the dark days of MLP bullshit) I enjoyed this video a lot!
Watching your videos on WOW was what ignited my interest in the MMO genre in general and while I always knew WOW was never for me, for many of the same reasons FFXIV isnt for you, it did start the search that lead me to FFXIV.
I've met my closest friends in this game, people I would even call family, and I'm glad that meeting them and all the good times I've had with this game came from watching some of your videos years and years ago.

As for my favorite part of the game I play Warrior, which is the same class you picked up, and honestly the WAR class quest isnt talked about all that much but I LOVE it. It's such a cute little story with a sweet but dopy himbo orc man and his cute "he likes her cause she could kick his ass" girl friend. The class quest gets overshadowed by other side and class quests, I'm sure there are people who have talked about the Dark knight questline and it is really good and talked about a lot of things about being a silent protag that are very very interesting and the consequences of that silence, but the WAR class quest is just a good time.
It's turn your brain off and watch nice but simple story that gets really sweet.

I feel like I'm one of the few people who will sing that side stories praises but its SO FUCKING CUTE! Big sweet himbo man tries his best to be a better person then gets a cute little girl friend who has kicked his ass to the ground multiple times and then he has to impress her dad and its all really sweet! His brother is also a really good character cause he's been hurt by the things the himbo cant control but they are both trying their best to help each other and they really feel like they have a real relationship and have faced real hardship but care a lot for each other. It's also a pretty comedic side quest in general but has some very nice heartfelt moments and its truly a side story I love very dearly and I feel gets overshadowed by a lot of other content.

  25. I love it cause it's earnest, and I love the PVE cause the big endgame fights are like a tightly choreographed dance that have their own rhythms to them that just feels super great as you learn. As far as my fave quest line: I really enjoyed the Mor Dhorna quest lines where you literally helped build a town up from an encampment. Unfortunately I don't know if it's still in the game, but it took place over the course of like, 2?, expansions.

  26. It sucks that some people in the XIV community are really naive when it comes to introducing others to the game. They're not only doing a disservice to those who are reluctant about playing it, but to the community's reputation as a whole.
But I am glad to hear that all in all you were very respectful and fair in your video.

What I like most about the game is unsurprisingly the story, but also the developers who are very consistent at improving the game. They've even started taking steps at updating old content to fit the rest of the experience

  27. The biggest mistake you did playing ffxiv is that you played it as an MMO that's trying to replace wow and constantly comparing to wow, give the game another chance if you can and grab some friends if they're playing or your viewers and just go through the story, you'll like the game much more this way and you will LOVE your character so much more as you go through this journey with them.

You heard this a billion times already but this game honestly has one of the best stories I've ever seen in a video game, and you will never believe or take anyone seriously who tells you that unless you actually experience it yourself.

  28. Favorite quest: so I don't know the quest name, but there's a quest line where you're reconnecting the failed heros of a fallen world with each other so they can try and save their world. All of the player dialogue options are fucking hilarious. Taking essentially a ghost to another world, "The price for my help is… YOUR SOUL!" Explaining the plan and mechanics behind it, "I have no idea what I'm doing." Getting called out for doing high level magic that can destroy people's souls, "It's fiiiine." Trying to open a portal to the fallen world which has basically become Hell, "Can we use the giant macguffin in the middle of town? Please?"

  29. As an ff player I would say that shadowbringers and end walker (SHB EW) ARE worth it hell even the side quests in the stromblood area foreshadowed a plot point in SHB so I like the sie quest into SHB oh that an crystal tower but not gunna ramble on that one xD
