I looked at the thumbnail and thought it was some kind of violent shooter, then I clicked and realised I was VERY wrong
Funny note about that secondary mission, Kugane Castle: When you fight Yojimbu (and Enkidu) during the course of the final fight of the Duty, for the most part his moveset is one you would expect the FF10 alumni to use, up to and including his demands for more gold to do his signature raidwide Zanmatsu. HOWEVER, there's one attack that specifically sticks out if you've done the Gilgamesh trials in ARR, and that's his use of the dragonheads firing beams from his Battle of the Big Keep encounter during the second money-gather phase.
Hell yeah more Hildibrand shenanigans!
And so we say goodbye to the great inspector for now. Next time for Durmin: Crisis on Earth 2!!
Laughed at how Durmin looked every direction except North before the Susano thing
So a really heartwarming part of this encounter is that it was playable at all 3 of the Fanfests in 2018-2019, as they always have a special trial for you to challenge. It was advertised as a fight with Yojimbo and at the time of the North American Fanfest we hadn't even seen the 4.45 quests yet. But one of the best things about the fight is that people did not spoil the twist of it at the time. People maintained their silence about the true identity of the combatant in the trial and I genuinely find that really nice. (Note I was in attendance and did clear the fight with my friends, Vegas Fanfest that year was a lot of fun, very intimate.)
I did halfway through one of the episodes, when the NPC in the sewer mentioned that Yojimbo is probably a collector of swords, have the thought that Yojimbo was probably Gilgamesh in disguise, or that Gilgamesh would at least come into play at some point. Glad to be proven correct!
Shout-out to all the edits showing the stalker guy, he is everywhere, dang
Noooooo… the greatest tragedy and sacrifice!
3:49 but he's so good at it! 😂
So nice to see JoCat join up for these once again, and glad to hear that he will return for the EW misadventures, though I for one, won't hold it against him if he changes his mind. I still wish you and Echo all the best. And Dan and Carrie too, of course
Greg is the worst person to ask to take you far far away!
The duet intro was so cute
I'm reminded of the line by Raditz from DBZ Abridged – "So, nudity makes you stronger on this planet". Lol
There /is/ a Hildabrand cameo in Shadowbringers… But it's RNG if he appears or not. And it's in patch content. I trust Durmin will at least go look for the good inspector.
Now the question becomes: Shall we see what kind of adventures Briardien has been up to?
i only just started reading it, but hildibrand is very much don quixote
You know what they say… Be careful with your words when speaking with an inter-dimensional being
0:14 Durmin and Victor full duet when
42:13 those fish look like at least half Durmin’s size
49:27 there needs to be a trial against Godbert
58:01 Bye Hildibrand, see you in Kingdom Hear—I mean Endwalker
1:03:51 Inconspicuous Man
Both the Hildibrand quests and the regular FFXIV series have been so fun! Thank you JoCat and Dan!
The Dawntrail trailer includes the BIGGEST bridge we have ever seen.
I CANNOT wait to fight "someone" on that bridge.
Since the trailer I knew that was Gilgamesh, but funny that just today I got to do half of the Gilgamesh hunt in FFXII
Playfriends, it's time to d-d-d-duel! This is your spoiler free lore comment.
7:30 – This Trial, being only linked to the Hildibrand quests (and later the Endwalker Relics), tends to have long wait times. I had to wait 30 minutes for my first run! And I queued as a Tank! This fight, unlike the finale of the Kugane Castle dungeon, has far less references to FFX.
9:00 – If Dan's title didn't give you a clue, GUESS WHO'S BACK!? That's right, Yojimbo is Gilgamesh! You can call him Greg! What, stealing a famously strong blade and going after a blade imbued with aether of a primal wasn't enough of a clue? How about the fact that "Ōhashi" means Big Bridge?
Let's muddy the waters further. There is a Yojimbo in Kugane Castle. Given the use of Dragon Heads same as here, and similar to Battle at the Big Keep, that is almost certainly Gilgamesh. There is also a Yojimbo, accompanied by Daigoro, at the Gold Saucer. I have no idea if that Yojimbo is Gilgamesh, or another Yojimbo.
17:23 – If your braincells are in revolt about the story to follow, I remind you that this is the Hildibrand questline. The loss of Enkidu, and adoption of Daigoro, and the alteration of Gilgamesh's body are all evidence of the gravitational and narrative anomaly that is Hildibrand Manderville.
36:40 – In this case, "Hannish" means that this consulate belongs to Radz-at-Han (it's not an embassy because Kugane is not the capital of Hingashi). A large island in the "near east" (west of Doma), Radz-at-Han is home to a lucrative spice and alchemy trade. Durmin passed by it when he reached The Sirensong Sea, but typical voyages would stop in Radz-at-Han in an effort to pick up valuable wares destined for both Eorzea and Kugane. The consulate is not constructed in the Hannish style, though. This is due to most old consulates not being purpose built, but converted existing prominent buildings, like mansions. Also, during Stormblood, the art style of Radz-at-Han hadn't been codified.
39:00 – Godbert last saw his son soaring off into the wild blue yonder, and his first reaction is What Ho. Strange happenings are just a day that end in Y for this family.
49:30 – WE'RE NOT FINE!
49:50 – Viewers of Dan's FF7 playthrough should recognize this as Omnislash! Or maybe, Omni-Smash?
51:30 – A good times montage, just what a father and son bonding moment needs!
56:40 – Don't question it. Don't. I've tried.
Welp, Hildibrand is off to parts unknown, again. As Dan and JoCat have noted, there is no Hildibrand Adventure for Shadowbringers. The developers felt that the tone of Hildibrand didn't mesh with their work in Shadowbringers, and considering their vast change in workflow during the pandemic, not adding to their workload is probably for the best. Hildibrand (and JoCat) will return in Endwalker!
heh heh…chickEnkidu…
💙
Huh, if Durmin just unlocked the Manderville Mambo, how'd they get that outro that they've been using since the ARR Hildy story?
Also glad I saw this today. I was playing The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles with family and having trouble finding a voice for Herlock Sholmes until I slipped into Jocat's Hildibrand voice!
I think this trial is my favorite of the Hildibrand trials.
It has taken how many episodes with JoCat for me to realize that this JoCat and Echo's JoCat are, in fact, the same. I feel silly
Wow, Hildi went full Lion-o there for a moment.
Mander! Mander! MANDERVILLE!! MAAAAA-AAAAAAAAAANNNNN!!!!!!
3:45 Might as well tell him to stop the sun from rising.
4:25 I will never forget the realisation of how many DragonBall characters had actually ridiculous names. At least some names are neat things stapled together, like "Akari"… which I forget what two things it is, but I found the meaning in a name generator.
7:22 I love these boats.
14:18 I also love that achievement.
22:2 Ah, snake oil salesman, I see.
23:24 Wasn't expecting this to get real.
27:12 I wonder if they could actually catch him? His dad, they'd never catch.
31:33 Good spot, JoCat.
34:09 "As above, so below"? That's an interesting choice of phrase. Also, it's gonna basically be cocaine, isn't it?
40:22 Fantasy cocaine potential.
40:40 So fantasy cocaine is used to make a mind-control drug? I can see it.
45:13 Phrasing, dude.
46:45 Me too, until I saw videos of people on stuff like Angel Dust… hard drugs are scary.
50:13 I'd say "You should be more precise", but I can't wait to see you get beaten to a pulp.
55:53 We're all a little mad.
57:08 This is why handcuffs exist.
58:03 Oh, come on man. You just got pulped by Godbert for the same kind of vague commands.
59:58 I wonder if he'll get to pick who cuts his head off or if it'll be chosen for him?
– If there's any lesson to be taken from this quest is to be specific with what you ask
– and there's our Greg!
– soon Greg is gonna have a full party of Animal companions & I'm looking forward to it
– ShadowBringers doesn't have a Hildebrand quest? worst Expansion confirmed
Akebono despite his Waluigi-like appearance has to be one of the most realistic FF Villains: the head of a Pharmaceutical group!
I am 100% here for the deep cut Terry Pratchett jokes the FFXIV team has bee putting in this series of Hildibrand quests!
I always thought Dewprism was a reference to Threads of Fate. I miss that game haha
Looking forward to the next FFXIV adventure!
Shigure actually did a surpassingly good job of surviving the Hildibrand orbit with his sanity reasonably intact.
Can definitely confirm that japanese media names are 95% puns. And so is japanese writing in general. A ton of puns everywhere that just can't be translated
Gotta love it when Gilgamesh said "it's Gilgameshing time" and Gilgameshes all over the place
Well! I for one am always up for more Hildibrand adventure, wherever he comes down this time…especially if they contain more Pterry quotes! Also glad to see You-Know-Who again, he's a treat😁
I've tried to get folks to stack the donuts, and when that fails I tell people "Clock positions" less uptime, but stacking fails if even one person is in the wrong place, clock rarely kills anybody.
