We need some more of it…
Hello everyone I am Jmulls of Jmulls Gaming and welcome to my little corner of the internet!
Walkthroughs, First Impressions, Critique and Reviews for all things video games, by someone who loves video games!
In today’s video, I talk about the concept of killing characters, how it can be used excessively or effectively and I argue how Final Fantasy 14 needs to make better use of it !

Round 4…
FIGHT!
I absolutely agree with the comment that Wuk Lamat did not change. She forced her way through the story as the writers warped reality around her to make her idealogical approach succeed even when it logically shouldn't. She wasn't challenged when she ran into sphene at all. When she got teleported out of the arena before the fight she actually said "Wait! I still haven't said…!" because for the fourth time, she was going to go tell Sphene what was on her mind and that would solve things. Then, she literally broke the boundary of reality, stole our fight, and "told Sphene" what was on her mind yet again. Partially because she was the only one there that didn't understand what living memory was and that Sphene wasn't a person making choices, she was a robot.
Take I don't think is all that hot – Tulliolal was under siege by an enemy force. That's a job for the vow of resolve. Wuk LAmat should have been dropped like a hot rock the instance the dome appeared and we should have left the fighter at home and brought the technology obsessed studium trained nerd with us to deal with the previously unknown technology. Part 2 should have been Koana's story, fleshing him out far more by showing him learning what happens when a civilization becomes swallowed by its runaway technology.
Gah, you're right. G'raha would've worked oretty well as a Mentor for Wuk Lamat based on his Crystal Exarch Experience. He could even have an Adventure besides the WoL at the same time.
Instead he stayed back home for most of the plot so Krile could have her Adventure instead, but she just got handed a bunch of crayons and a brush, then sent to the corner to draw something while the others do the Adventure. Double injustice and wasted potential!
I predict that Wuk Lamat will become so adamant to try and keep us by our side that she accidentally becomes the villain. She will do everything she can to be a part of us because saying goodbyes hurt and she's too afraid to let go.
That Wuk Lamat ends up becoming an accidental villain simply because her actions will lead down a path that causes us to fight her. Be it 1v1, 8v1,
Or in an impossible, insane or completely stupid way, she takes the Azem Crystal and tries to use it in a way which leads to another alliance raid series.
hot take?
the raid story line to me is better then the entire first and second half of MSQ
furry naruto just didnt do it for me in the first half nad to many speak to wuk lamat that resulted in no progess (yep i dont think she changes at all by the end yelling she knows her and wants to fight the real sphene yet everyone else is there looking at this giant robot thinkin, how dumb is this hrothgar?)
bakool jaja story was to short to had any impact on me and resolved in a laughable way
zarool ja was just forgettable in its entiraty
my interest is more in the wrestling matches and the story of the souls and people being put away becuse they changed
changed how as in more demi human races as in they are like half spider ,half bomb, half bee people permanantly?
they just die very very young and thats it, what are all the effects and how are we gonna solve it.
i like my thiccxion like any other man but im also interested in the story who even the director is more then i was invested then talking to wuk lamat for the thousandt time becuse she didnt know something about her own people and cultures
(srry for the bad english its not my first language)
Hot take: Golul ja (aka blue shrimp) served no story purpose outside of shafting Krile even further out of DT Story, and opens up so many plotholes its rediculous. besides of how shrimp even exist to begin with… with the gate seemingly needing the royal authority + the command from the earring… how did Kriles parrents even opened it in the first place?… this character makes me mad as much as Wuk Lamat does….
"the story isn't that important i only interact with it once" *looks over at my mere thousand hour play time, with at least 700 of those hours being story……I do everything for the story, and since I've finished DT MSQ other than to unlock the expert dungeons and doing the raids story lines I don't touch DT zones anything to avoid the happy go luck combat music Also an MMO may succeed with a poor story but I don't think FFXIV would've continued to succeed if not for it's story
While I think it’s tragic and not what I’d hoping for graha’s adventure I think he actually already got it. I think his role in the endwalker alliance raid series was meant to be his “adventure” that we promised him. As much as it sucks I really do think that was it.
Dawntrail? I though this was a JoJo episode
I appreciate that you addressed my comment, while I still belive my statement for the most part, things could've definitely been handled better. In reality my real problem is the fact we, the WoL and Scions are installing child leaders. Her and Koana are in their super early twenties and while children have historically had the power of a king/etc in our real world. It's quite frustrating to see children with no experience take a place of power in XIV as we already have inept leaders in our real world. Pretty sure Yoshi-P said they don't want to make things that make players feel hate, a logical character as a leader is far better and more interesting than what we got.
My hot take: for all the talk of DT being like ARR in that it was meant to set up future arcs, the only plot hook it really established for future expansions was the Azem mcguffin at the very end which they could have introduced any number of ways. Any other DT loose threads feel like they’re just going to be handled in the patches
My hot take would be that I feel wuk lamat pre dawn trail is a different person than wuk lamat in dawntrail
Pre dawntrail she was confident and eager to explore and was brave most of all not sea sick though half the story and in dawntrail everything was a 180 I genuinely liked wuk lamat before dawntrail
The only way to redeem Wuk Lamat at this point is to kill her off so Koana can get some much deserved character development
Virgin Wuk Lamat: Zenoossss Listen dah Mehhh!
Chad Zenos: A TEST OF YOUR REFLEX!
While I haven’t done all of the Dawntrail role quests (all of melee and some of tank and healer) I feel like these should’ve been more serious or have higher stakes. These vessels house some dangerous shit and the villains, from what I’ve seen at least, have very poor end goals with these things.
FF14 is a story focused MSQ that literally disables content until you progress through the MSQ, so yeah, I think the MSQ IS important. So I VERY MUCH disagree with the first one
Hot take:
Wuk Lamat shall have become the villain instead of Zoraal Ja. Picture this:
1. In Yak T'el, Wuk Lamat is paired with Zoraal Ja and wins. This makes Zoraal Ja start understanding war is not always the best answer after hearing how is father stopped the war there.
2. In Mamool Ja, make Zoraal Ja win against his father and Wuk Lamat lose.
3. The party follows Zoraal Ja to the golden city (because why the hell not?) and hears a conversation between Zoraal Ja and Sphene. She tells the story of her people to Zoraal Ja who refuses to join her knowing the implications for Tuliyollal.
4. Zoraal Ja is recognized as the successor of Gulool Ja Ja in Tuliyollal. In the meantime, Wuk Lamat steals the key in the palace and joins Sphene to save her people.
5. The dome appears and Wuk Lamat goes back to Tuliyollal after the time skip to try to convince her father to integrate Tuliyollal in Alexandria.
6. Gulool Ja Ja refuses to abdicate and organizes a match with Wuk Lamat. Wuk Lamat kills Gulool Ja Ja and retreats in the dome due to the psychological trauma of having killed her own father.
7. Zoraal Ja goes after her to the dome with her former party.
8. Then basically do the end with Zoraal Ja as the main protagonist instead of Wuk Lamat and make him understand her point of view by making him meat former citizens of Tuliyollal inside the dome.
To me this would somewhat retrospectively make the first two areas more bearable. Because this is no longer only about making the WoL meet the different tribes. This is to learn about Wuk Lamat before that she turns evil.
Hot take this game is infested with liberal communist/socialist trash.
Hot take: when JMulls talks about riding Zenos' back not being "in that way," he actually does mean he wants it to be that way. I see you aiming for those Zenos backshots you can't fool me.
The worst part of dawntrail was Wuk Lamat, but the scariest part about Dawntrail is going back to Wuk Lamat in the palace, and her dialogue heavily implies she wants to shirk the duty of being dawnservant as soon as possible and start adventuring with us. The writers need to be FIRED. F I R E D.
finished msq and havent been back. worst xpac so far.
The problem with the first take is, if the underlying story sucks, why should I care about the gameplay? The only time story really does not matter to me is PvP. If I'm playing PvE and the gameplay is great, if the game is designed to be supported by a story and it sucks, I just stop caring about the gameplay, too.
I have several Hot Takes but im going leave one here i dont see too many talk about. I think they should leaned far more into the "Low Stakes" Idea at least for the 1st half. You are essentially picking a ruler for the country while yes this is low(er) stakes comparatively this will still affect likely thousands of people. I think this "contest" should not have been to decide a ruler or at least not give you two extremely bad antagonists. Had B. Ja Ja won the area would likely revert back to a civil war state with him trying to impose his will on those he views as "lessers." Z. Ja would have thrown his people into a world war… He'd loose.. and quickly but not before his people get massacred. These are not low stakes. They are low when compared to an existential threat but by putting this level of threat it makes the trials you go on seem extremely insignificant and pointless. Z. Ja still forced his people into a war, and if B. Ja Ja hadn't been "reformed" (still deserves to be locked away for life or thd death penalty) then there's no doubt in my mind that he would have continued his crusade and continued to challenge the dawnservant's rule.
Hot take: Dawntrail would have been better if Wuk Lamat was obsessed with peas.
4:30 That "character development" doesn't feel very authentic. Human beings can develop a lot based on a few weeks of dramatic experiences, but they don't typically develop in just a few weeks. It takes time to digest and integrate experiences and to do the "work" of changing habits and practicing those habits.
Like, I might go to a concert and discover that I love jazz music, and that might even inspire me to become a musician who creates jazz, but it doesn't mean I understand jazz or know how to play or compose it.
Authentic character growth, the hero's journey, requires YEARS, even in fiction. For a newly introduced character to have meaningful growth in a short story, we need to see the passage of time through flashbacks or flash-forwards.
Dawntrail was supposed to have some kind of 'tribalistic' aesthetic to it. Like Wuk's outfit having gold plates, or jewelry, for that 'primitive' style. Hell even Galool Ja Ja and Zoraljaa being examples of the aesthetic I'm talking about. I cannot express the utter disappointment I had for this expansion when we got recolored gear and 'a poncho' as the only stuff armor wise like that and the endgame gear is all biker/kink shit or futuristic stuff. I wanted caveman gear and there was literally nothing there in the one expansion that could have had it. Piled on top of the MSQ being as bad as it was, I just couldn't take it anymore.
I wish people would recreate the EW trailer where Zenos kicks Alisae but replaces her with Wuk instead.
They basically glossed over Erenville and Kriel's stories and character development. There was no good reason to do that. Wuk Lamat needed some breaks from center stage that could have been used to that. I felt nothing for Wuk Lamat and really wanted to say "No" somewhere in there and go off on my own. Still not sure why I was needed. She could have taken the twins to do what we all slogged through. Also, we should have some time with her father to hear about his adventures and uniting the separate areas and peoples. Seems like we could learn from him or just be there while Alphinaud learned.
My biggest issue is this didn't feel like a vacation. Where is my beach episode with the scions. All we got is a giant side quest. I'm fine not being the main character but I freaking wanted to be lounging on the beach in between helping wut get the throne.
Try reading Zeno backstory book
Zeno father was terrible father period
That first hot take… I’m on my 3rd play through at the moment. I think it’s just that good of a storyline
