Woot new video
"Is this item high-quality? …I guess!"
That's what the pop up you just closed was trying to explain XD
(The one you closed after that says that when you gain any experience and you're wearing gear, it binds to you and can't be sold or traded afterwards.)
Oh, about quests, pick up the story ones (little flame icon, also the one in the scenario guide on the top left above your name) and the ones that unlock things (blue, unless it's inside a guild in which case that's the quest to unlock the class). Every other quest is optional and you can use them to level up alternate classes. The blue quests can unlock features like an optional dungeon, PVP feature, or some other in-game feature like the challenge log (this is super missable so try to unlock it, so much EXP and money… it unlocks a weekly set of mini-achievements that give you EXP or currency when you complete each).
I'm glad you're enjoying yourself!
I've been playing for about 9 years… and I still have never completed a single hunting log. I never went out of my way to complete it, it was more of a thing I'd do while riding around. I'd be on my way to an objective or quest and see the little yellow slash icon on an enemy and go "oh hey, hunting log!", kill, get bonux XP, move on XD
I'm glad you're a pugilist man, it was my first XIV class as well
In the case of the original cities, and indoor cities in other expansions, is they're instanced so people can't use mounts. In the original game, many players' vision was obscured by the enormous mounts (I mean, still happens sometimes, but not to new players just learning the game).
To help move between points in the city, look out for aetheryte shards (shiny blue crystal stands) and interact with them to attune. It's an in-city fast travel.
pugilist
/ˈpjuːdʒɪlɪst/
noun
DATED•HUMOROUS
a boxer, especially a professional one.
Which as you kind of guessed turns into Monk later 👌
The instanced stuff… that's partly because this game was made for PS3 which had like… 256MB of RAM. Honestly, it's magic how it would ever be able to run on a darn PS3.
Mounts are absolutely available to you, and very early on, but it's after a level 20 MSQ quest, so just follow the story and you'll get your very own chicken.
One thing, I'm not sure if it was pointed out to you, and it's not a concern until you get to some other cities.
But for certain events and story line points in the game – after you complete them the NPC dialogues all change – to keep in line with the story. For Example: If you play a Lancer/Dragoon – and enter the expansion Heavensward – you will get unique dialogue that only that class gets. Its not game changing – but its a nice feature that people who SHOULD know you, do recognize you.
Annual Events as well, the NPC will remember you did the quest the previous year. It's small things, but creates an aesthetic that the world is alive.
(Players that finished ver 1.0 – get a unique start cinematic and finale cutscene at the end of ARR as well)
You can also gain more access to the world view – by clicking NPC's around an important NPC turn in – if they're clickable – this is more prevalent later in the game.
Often NPC's are affected by events that you're responsible too as well – the little pop up bubbles that aren't even in your text log often reference things you have knowledge about but they do not. (this isn't a real example – but equate it to say borrowing a boat – and later when you go back to the city – the npcs are talking about a boat thief – again, this isnt in the game but small references the world is fluid)
I followed/subscribed to see how your journey goes. I look forwards to seeing how the game warms to you etc, as you progress. I hope you enjoy your story, your journey.
I look forward to seeing how things develop. 🙂
Just a head's up- you don't need to do the unmarked normal quests at all. Following the main Story and doing the Blue job quests (and other blue quests) is more than enough
Welcome to Eorzea! Hope you'll enjoy your stay 😀
On the topic of the instancing; It was indeed done to help with the game's performance. FFXIV 1.x was notoriously laggy because the original dev team decided to put an unhealthy focus on graphics quality to the point that there were flower pots that demanded more of your graphics card than the player characters' models.
With ARR(A Realm Reborn) all that changed, with the new dev team focusing on performance(among other things, it was a complete revamp of the game after the first iteration failed completely). I don't know if the instancing was introduced by them or a leftover from the old system, but it's definitely there for performance.
Cities dont get instanced in the later expansions, only the early ones. The game has alot more big open cities as you get through the game.
Also feel free to ignore yellow quests. You get more than enough exp from msq quests (the ones with the corona, sun outline.) Those and blue quests (the ones that look like yellow quest except they're blue) are all you really want to do as blue quests all unlock something of at least some importance.
while playing Pugalist (turns into Monk at level 30) and in every melee job, Lancer > Dragoon, Rogue > Ninja, and Samurai, your combat abilities come with certain things called positionals, For pugalist/monk they're the most important, you're going to have a 3 step combo and each of your buttons have their own positional requirement, 9/10 times if you play melee DPS and you don't know, it's best to stand behind the boss, on that open part of the target circle, that's the rear positional and on either side of the boss is the flank positional, Bootshine, your basic level 1 ability does critical damage from the rear, True strike also does more damage from the rear, and snap punch does more damage from the flank. Basically always read your tooltips for your buttons, they go miles in making content easier
In 1.0 the zones and cities were on continuous thing like in Warcraft but it was full of "loading tunnels", pretty much like most main cities in vanilla WoW. When they moved into ARR they decided it was just faster to have loading transitions, particularly in PS3. Once they dropped support for PS3 in Bloodstorm they stopped splitting cities like that.
It's allright, you do you, if you want to skip go ahead, your enjoyement comes first.
the instancing was based on the PlayStation version limitations, much bigger zones as you level and PS abilities got better
This seems like a nice playthrough! Good to hear that you're planning to read the dialogue in the future. Understanding the world and characters will pay off when the story starts getting really good. I've played many MMOs too, and I'm not exaggerating much when I say the story in FFXIV is better than all the others combined. The first part (A Realm Reborn, before the expansions) is rather slowly paced though, so it will demand some patience. Still, even unimportant dialogue is often amusing and well written.
Welcome to Shiva! Glad you're enjoying the game 🙂
the game was made for ps3 too. thats why theres so many zoning. easier on the system.
Good content! Don't mind people telling you not to skip texts and cutscenes, just enjoy the game your way! I have almost 10k hours played, all battle jobs and gathers/crafters max level, cleared all end game savage and ultimate raids.. all of this without reading or watching anything of the game story.. no regrets at all.. it was and still lots of fun! Enjoy!
Next to the names of enemies there are symbols that inform you if that monster has a purpose for your quest/hunter log.
Unlike WoW most quests in FF14 do not require you to kill something. The fighting is mostly when you go from one place to another. But killing stuff, also unlike WoW, doesnt give you much xp; its actually more a token amount. If you want to grind xp (which isnt even necessary in your first job) you can do FATEs and Leves. But at the moment its more likely you "overcap" your xp to the MSQ, and everything in the game is locked to your progress in the MSQ: even if you are lvl40, you wont get your mount when you havent reached the lvl20 part of your MSQ. Sidequests are mostly fillerquest: they tell a funny story and introduce you to the place and people where you are. But their xp isnt significant and you can mostly ignore them – unless of course you want to them, legid. They sometimes award emotes and useful gear.
34:10 — Congratulations, you start to know this community quite well already XD Seriously, though, if story is not your thing, thats fine. There is enough to keep you busy. Not saying I'm not bashing my forehead seeing this, but hey, even we can learn to be a little less… rigid from time to time ^^°
I honestly got a little impatient with all the dialogue at the beginning as well so no shame! It took me a little time to get into the story but once I did, it was so worth it. I’m probably going to do new game + to re-experience some of the earlier dialogue and cut scenes that I skimmed over. Anyways, I appreciate your response to everyone’s feedback 🙂
WoW might have a large open world, but it is rather barren compared to ffxiv's world if you look a bit closer at it. FFXIV also have a day and night cycle as well as dynamic weather which they wouldn't be able to have if it wasn't instanced. Can't have both I guess! 🙂
To add up to what everyone's been explaining: XIV was promised on PS3 when it was originally announced, and though by the time ARR was due to launch the PS3 would already outdated, Yoshi-P (Producer/Director) wanted to keep true to the original promise of putting the game on the PS3. With the limited time they had (a year and a half) the ARR areas became rather small and limited to fit on PS3. For Heavensward in 2015, the team had much more time and experience with the game, and they were able to put the xpac on the PS3, on a feat that is up there on par with fitting Witcher 3 on Switch. For Stormblood, PS3 support was finally dropped and the game grew exponentially.
I think you should be fine skipping a few dialogues but if it's part of the msq it's something worth reading cause yeah I love the lore myself but I know some people are really not into it and I know that some may just end up hating the game being forced to do something they really don't like so feel free to use your mmorpg experience and skip what you feel isn't worth reading but Like I said msq is a must and some sidequest really do have some good story so just something to keep in mind.
The game has to support both PlayStation for console players at the time it originally released as well PC. So their may have been reasons for all the Instancing. Anyway Side Quests are totally optional. You will have plenty to do ongoing sticking to the Main Scenario Quests or MSQ’s.
Voice acting picks up more as you level in ARR. it’s far more extensive voice acting in the 2nd, 3rd, 4th expansions. ARR – A Realm Reborn was done in record time for any MMO to replace the disaster that was FF14 original launch. It had to be done fast simultaneously while the original disaster launch which was still limping along.
More videos please. Hooked
One of the reason the cities are instanced (like most of the game) is because this game was also released for PS3 back then too, they needed to make sure everything could load better in the console
The amount of voiced cutscenes increase as you get to newer content
Attune yourself to all the blue crystals you find around even the small out. It's fast travel checkpoints
The name of the class is Pugilist. It’s pronounced “pyuu-gill-ist”. It’s derived from the term “Pugilism” which means to fight with ones fists, usually in reference to boxing. Aka: Fisticuffs. ^_^v
you are so much fun to watch please keep up the awesome personality
You earned my sub ! Very entertaining to watch. I don't know if someone mentioned this already but on the top left there is an icon with fire and the fire symbol, that will always open latest story quest. Under that is an exclamation mark that will always show you your latest class quests. Always do class quests as they will give you your abilities (or equipment or gil). Thanks so much for the fun times.
Im very Anti-skipping myself so Im glad to hear that. However, if you should find going forward that you missed stuff it's not the end of the world. If that happens and you choose to, there are 2 ways you can go back and Review that stuff. 1 way is post-expansion New Game+, will allow you to go back and replay parts. The other is to visit an Inn. Theres a journal on the desks that let you rewatch cutscenes
Heh, I love your editors comments!
I think Pugilist/Monk is right up your alley. It's a high skill ceiling job and one of the toughest melee jobs.
Always something to be pressing, switching from back to side, weaving in your long cooldown skills during the global cooldown. Always go, go, go.
I just saw you standing around in Horizon today. I wasn't aware you were playing on Shiva. Unfortunately you were afk, i would have said hello!
Tip: Just focus on the main scenario quests for your first play through. Side quests can be saved for alt classes later.
