“NEVER” is a strong word for sure, but want to talk PvP, my stance on PvP in FFXIV and why I’m so reluctant to give it a try. And yep, it’s NOTHING to do with FF14 and EVERYTHING to do with past experiences.

  1. So, this one's been playing on my mind for a while now, and while "NEVER" really is a strong word, here's why I'm so reluctant to hop into PvP (which would almost surely lead to uploading PvP content here). Enjoy memory lane and a bit of channel history for those of ya'll that are newer here!

  2. I think I've been tuned in since Cobrak 6 or so… I even think I remember Linkin Park remix in Cob 6 (or could be totally wrong). Trip down memory lane indeed 🙂
With time passing your channel became more of a comfort zone rather than warlock-centered wow channel. So whatever you feel like playing/doing I hope you stick around making videos for good 🙂 Stay safe my dude!

  3. The thing is, FFXIV NEEDS content creators to make content around PVP. It's one of the smallest communities in the game and there's pretty much no widely viewed coverage of it. With SE obviously pouring a lot of time and resources into this new PVP mode, what I personally hope to see is people playing it and talking about it and making suggestions about things that could be better or about things that they like about it. PVP in FFXIV also is meant to just be another notch in the FFXIV experience that you can choose to enjoy a little bit or a lot. Now, if you personally feel like PVP is a drug that you have to completely abstain from then I guess I can understand that. But if that's the case then I guess I'll just tell you (…clears throat) that you obviously can't play FFXIV PVP in moderation with ALL of the game's other content and you should definitely just skip it entirely because of this mental limitation you have given yourself. I'm sorry but it had to be said.

  4. I jumped into the Garo Event during October 2019 in the closing weeks. I literally got the last achievement I needed for a mount with an hour to go. (I have all the gear sets as well.)

Since then, I have just run the Roulette for Tomestones and/or XP. I haven't needed either lately, but I intend to jump back in as soon as EW releases.

  5. I subbed for your Ironman content a while back and found the destro PvP videos after the fact. You made BGs seem interesting to a PvE player and now knowing how much time it took you to get a single clip and make every video better than the last it reminded me that you even did the Ironman challenge on a pvp server to "one up: everyone else who was doing the challenge at the time, like Peon and Asmon. You've always been super dedicated to making videos and doing difficult challenges just to prove you can. I know you said FF14 is your retirement game, but are there any self imposed or otherwise defining challenges you are looking to try in FF, or is that kind of mindset the same as the Cobrak 17 one, and something you don't pursue at the current moment? Either way much love from a long time, lurker of a fan.

  6. So basically Cob, in WoW you became like the Warlock equivalent of Zenos xD. As someone who used to play Holy Paladin, good destruction warlocks were incredibly dangerous, especially during MoP.

  7. PvP in 14 is really good if you have a tight group of friends, because the competitive 4 v 4 mode is very similar to WoW Arena, and its ranked matched. The 72 player mode is like objective BGs in WoW, like Arathi Basin. Everything works smoothly, and fun to play, daily for the exp when lvling jobs.

  8. Like half of my metal library on Spotify/YouTube is artists/tracks from Drakedog and Cobrak videos from back in the day. To be honest, we're not held down by the same vices and hard gear-checks in FFXIV like we are in WoW, so there's no harm in recording some funny clips with Soph in the new 5v5 mode, if you decide to give it a try in Endwalker.

Just treat PvP with the same sort of attitude you have been with the rest of the game; Self-improvement for the sake of enjoyment, rather than competing.

  9. As we get on with our age, things, priorities and views will change along with it. I think most of us enjoy watching you and Sophie's FFXIV together and seeing that growth and joy of the game. I say play what you want as all of the various activities in the game will be there all waiting for you. But now you have the option of what you want to do in game and your journey through it is that is most important. Welcome to the waiting room with the rest of us. We will all be sharing this new chapter all together!

  10. That's a great way to look at it xD. There are so many things to do in this game that I hope you don't end up focusing on just one endgame, so to speak. Housing, raiding, RP and my personal favorite – economic domination lol.

edit: also I can't get into PvP in 14 because the setting doesn't put me in that mindset, not like WoW. In 14, the vibe is lighter. I'm more chill, happy and more engaged with other aspects of the game. When I played WoW (quit back in MoP), the setting was hostile. You had factions that were at war. When you went to bg, you felt a blood lust especially if you played on a PvP realm and you got ganked or ambushed here and there. That was the vibe. You wanted badly to kill opposing faction characters. It was awesome, I loved it.

It's not bad that 14 cannot make me feel that way, bc that's not the vibe of the game. And I hope 14 never changes and focuses on its strength. It's wholesomeness is something I haven't felt in games in a long time.

  11. with FFXIV, you get the sense the developers genuinely struggle with implementing PVP because it more or less directly contradicts a lot of the philosophical underpinnings of the game. They've spent years doing everything they reasonably can to design the game in such a way that direct conflict between players is minimized.

The noble goal of PVP is, I think, emergent gameplay and friendly competition. But the reality of PVP is that it only takes one person taking a loss personally to create a mad toxic environment. There's one place in FFXIV where they've had to limit global chat, and it's in pvp… because of salt.

I'm interested in the new PVP mode, Crystal Conflict. From what they've shown of it, it looks like they've done a lot of work to cut down on potential friction between players as much as possible.

  12. Ay Cob totally unrelated but I just got done re-watching your Total War videos from way back. I know you said you just play whatever game you feel like but damn do I miss the simpler times.

  13. It was actually super nice to hear a bit about your history and you as a person 🙂 As one of your newer viewers, all I knew was that you did pvp with a destro lock in WoW, but nothing more, so it was cool to hear about! ^^

As a person, I'm a bit similar as you, though my outlets have been in other games (CS:GO and Rocket League mainly), and I feel pretty much the same way about FFXIV. I've been playing for a bit over a year now, and have basically completed most of my main goals (Though I'm still missing some savage raids and all the ultimates – too much work finding groups that fit :'( ^^) While I do play a lot, I feel like I have the same mentality of taking it at a pretty casual pace, and I'm still just doing whatever I feel like. I've played exactly 1 pvp match, and while I didn't hate it, I've kinda just left it behind while doing other stuff. I think I'm probably gonna try more when the new pvp mode comes out, but I can definitely see your perspective of just ignoring it completely. There are definitely enough other things to do in the game (And you can always take breaks as well!)

As a side note – Since you're a fairly recent level 80, your dps is probably often lower because of gear (Though I do not know what gear you have at all ^^), so don't be too hard on yourself 😀 But I definitely understand the urge to always improve and do better 🙂

Always excited to see what's next for you (and Sophie ^^) – until next time 😀

  14. I think FFXIV has helped many wow players mature from the mindset that they used to have in wow. You see it in asmon, rich, pint, pyromancer and other wow content creators. They all seem to be in a much happier place. I see it in myself too. FFXIV helped me changing my mindset from a competitive one to one where I just want to enjoy games. PVP in ff14 can be fun and casual and from what I've seen you and sophie have very much a fun and experience focused mindset when engaging with ff14 content. Still you should do things that make you happy and if you feel slipping into pvp would make unhappy, there is still a lot more content in ff14 you can enjoy.

  15. hey cob.. im a longe time fan.. i know exactly as i saw ur first video. I was like wtf this dude needs more subs. I clicked the button. i was subscriber number 4092.
You were my great role model. so i started a youtube channel with warlock content. I remember exactly how I waited excitedly. What is Cobrak going to do crazy in the next video? A dream came true back then when you changed the name cobrak because you couldn't get any good clips. Everyone followed you in the bg. You then did bg with viewers on twitch stream and I was one of them. as we had waited for invite we chatted a little privately. Nothing special for you. You already know: Cob, I'm a big fan and I'm happy to be able to do bgs with you. Bla blaThis Fanboi stuff. But I knew deep down that it would be one of the last great pvp videos. Anyway. I always like to watch your videos and wish you and sophie all the best for the future.

  16. That mid-flight clip when you were on your glider chasing the guy with the parachute was LEGENDARY. Right when you started talking about, i knew the exact clip you were talking about.

It was worth the 5 week wait hahaha

  17. Cob I'll be honest. The pvp scene of FF is niche as it can be. Theirs only a few guys who actively do it (speaking of content creators, biggest one being Brian Ricardo)

I've tried it. Got to high silver and proceeded to get shafted by the match making. Not gonna lie I enjoyed it while I did it but Holy shit I've never been so pissed off in all my life.

I'd say… if you want the opinion… try it out (not frontlines. The feast etc). But it definitely won't feel smooth for a bit until you're used it it :3 see you in endwalker brother

  18. Onde hundred agree with you. What inspired me to play and love WOW back in the good old days, was watching drakedog montages and yours. Spamming BG's just for the adrenaline of doing 1vX was my shit, i did not gave a shit to any other content in the game, besides spamming BGS, specially in MOP expansion (which in my opinion, was the best class design/philosophy of the entire wow's history).
And i also got inspired to do my own montages, very silly and bad, but i was having so much fun, trying to record 1vX footages, or 2vX (with my pal, that played fire mage or boomy, he was also inspired by Thyraz and Hansol)
Personally, i dont give a damn to wow's lore, raid mechanics and other stuffs (except borrowed power mechanics, screw this shit idea that blizzard had), i just want destruction warlock to be fun.
That's why i think i will never comeback to wow, i have zero hope that we are going to have warlock near as fun the MOP's class design was.

  19. LOL holy shit Drakedog 7!! Haven't heard that in ages. I fell out with WoW wayyy back in early Cata but that video was hugely inspirational to me getting into WoW PvP.
To this day, my Tab and Q keybinds are swapped because I found a forum post with his warlock binds and I stole them. Always weirds people out when they see my FFXIV hotbars lol.

  20. Just do the large scale PvP, Frontlines.
Its the same as WoW, tanks and healers are harder to kill and the general rule is to gank or be ganked
It also has fast queues and has pretty low stakes since everyone gets a reward

  21. One thing to remember for FF14 pvp, at least for Frontlines, is that you don't need to WIN pvp to get the rewards. You just get more of them if you win. And even then it's more based on your score most of the time, so did you get 2nd place in a game of 1600/1600 1400/1600 900/1400? Then that's basically a win. Of course, this is just about battlegrou- I mean Frontlines and not the soon-to-be-removed Feast or the never-played-outside-of-moogle-tome-events Rival Wings.
And let's be honest, in a 24v24v24 clusterf*** your performance will matter very little one way or the other as long as you follow the zerg.

  23. I had mentioned to my friend who I played 19s with (since wotlk) that I had been watching you and your wife's 14 playthrough!

Once I said your name he went "oh yeah! Ryan (old friend from Cata) used to watch him all the time before he quit wow (him, not you).

You definitely left your mark on the game, so whatever you want to do now is up to you in this one! But ill be happy to watch it all !
