What It Means To Be Casual in Final Fantasy XIV

In FFXIV, the term “Casual” simultaneously exists as a description of a person’s time committed, an off-the-cuff analysis of a player’s gameplay ability, and finally as an all-encompassing insult when either of those factors fail to live up to the expectations of a judgmental party. But should a legitimate description and method of playing the game also be a synonym for an insufficient gamer? In this video, I’m analyzing the issues that arise when the multiple meanings of casual collide, causing confusion and consternation for the community.

  1. As someone who is constantly attempting to find groups for ultimate, this is a perfect synopsis of my problem. My definition of hardcore is apparently VERY different than alot of groups i find. I often times don't even figure out their expected clear time until I am in a full conversation with them. People being upfront with expectations would make group hunting so much easier. Also, when somebody just doesn't play the game right AND is toxic and says they are casual, the correct response is "you are not casual, you are just bad."

  2. A casual player can only be this 3 things :

    1. player who play with little time .(ppl who do dungs or pvp from time to time but dont raid or run m+) 2. player who run causal content .(ppl who play for the story not raids or hard dungs)

    3. solo players .(ppl who run pvp and farm and grind the mostly but never run endgame content because it group activity)

the rest like ppl who run any raid or m+ are no longer casual they are midcore .(ppl who do a bit of everything and play decent hours)

and then the hardcore players who run the raids and m+ content in games.

  3. I really like how you point out that people just use the term "casual" either as an insult for bad, or as an excuse for laziness/being irresponsible. Lol. Casual is not bad, bad means bad.

Btw Caer your poll only allows 1 option! What if I am interested in all of them? 🙂

  4. Honestly, the dev's reluctance to put in any ranking system or way to compare vs. other players have led to the community making their own. Which as one might expect is so wildly subjective that most of it is just ego padding. Even statistical based tools like FFLogs are inconsistent and most players don't actually look at them past the parse color or the rDPS/aDPS page.(Seriously though check out the deeper aspects of the logs its super helpful.) Which really is a very narrow and incomplete look at your performance.
Idk the mental gymnastics people put them through to rank themselves and to give themselves the high ground to put other down is silly. But considering the absolute hell the raiding scene would be with an official ranking system, maybe it's better that it stays like this. Bullying others over unofficial ranks a video game is small dick energy anyway. In the end, it's an escape, and people should just find their tribe without passing judgment on what other people do or where they are in their journey.

  5. I play the game quite a lot.

I only play old raids on pf and get the easy glams and mounts.

I only farm tomestones for gears, just to better cheese old mechs unsynced.

I think "hard" content is boring.

I put "casual" on my adv plate proudly.

  6. Casuals like myself make up the life blood of this game, so insulting us just leads to people alienating themselves from like 90% of the population which is a weird thing for people to do.

  7. Sorry to hear about your wife’s experience with an alliance raid! That being said, from what I’ve heard alliance raids can be the most toxic normal content, and apparently Rabanastre can be especially bad because there are people trying to speed run it and whatnot.

I generally avoid alliance raids myself, not because of it being difficult or anything, but because I find it overwhelming with so many people on the map at the same time, and I doubt turning visuals down would help because the people would still be there even with the lesser visual spam. I personally prefer to stick to content that only calls for 4-8 players, though I can handle the occasional crowded battle in Bozja because it doesn’t last as long as alliance raids do.

I’m not yet a raider, but do want to try Savage sometime

  8. Just because you no life a game and someone is doing less hours than you doesn’t make him more casual than you. I had hc groups that raid 10+ hours that cleared week 1 I had a 4 hours daily static and we still cleared week 1. There are so many try hands in final that are inconsistent and don’t prepere but just no life the raid with 10+ a day and somehow kill stuff just with the amount of time spent. Maybe even spent more than twice than a good 4 hours daily group. And logs don’t show me if someone is a good player it just shows me that he had 1-2 good pulls and learnd a choreography that is not necessary to clear it week 1.

  9. Here's what see casual as, someone who doesnt really engage in the harder content such as synced EX fights, doesnt do savage at all and does other content such as housing, island sanctuaries, glamor, ect. it DOES NOT mean people who suck at the game, and if someone goes "I'm just a casual player" is not a valid excuse to be a bad player and not give a damn about the others around them. Thats not casual, thats lazy

  10. as a 17 year veteran of other MMOs like WoW, this discussion has been had many a time, and still no one can accurately describe any of these words. Its hilarious to see this pop up in every MMO I have ever played. The terms are nigh impossible to define because they mean so much yet so little in the grand scheme of the game. Even in games like WoW with the raid or die mentality, the terms are just vapor. I used to raid hard and pushed heroic/mythic in WoW, and would constantly run into these squirrel brains who would use vapor words as insults. I got tired of all the BS and thats why I sort of gave up raiding as a past time and I enjoy XIV more casually, only doing normal mode with the occasional extreme. The squirrel brains tend to ruin the experience.

  11. Any one who uses casual as an insult or takes offense to it is a try hard and I refuse to play with them. Cut and dry Next! My FC is a savage FC and we play casually and get things done. No one I have run into, not even world first, get paid to play so we are all casual. Anyone who claims other wise is a try hard because they will try hard to get other people's approval and usually are toxic people who are no fun to be around. Who likes hanging around people who always have something to prove?

  12. I’m a casual average H2 in a static and raid logging almost everyday for P8S prog. Being a casual does not mean I cannot sleep walk in Savage, i already did. Its all about learning and practicing. I do every content like savage for practice.

Casual players are not the same as bad players.

However, high-end or hardcore raiders forgot about that sometimes because they have too much ego. I was made fun of in a normal raid for accidentally let someone died. When i tried to explain the situation, i was shoved in the face with “I already cleared Savage version and you cannot, so shut up” kind of argument.

  13. I'm an actual casual. Even if I do have the time for savage and beyond, I'm not interested in it. I only login for roulettes, Island sanctuary, tribal quests, glamour etc. I sell all my materias because to me it's more for raiders and since I won't be raiding I don't need em. Only thing you could catch me actively grinding for are relic weapons.
