How to Catch Sidereal Whale in FFXIV

In this guide I’ll talk about how to catch Sidereal Whale, and its three intuition fish. This whale friend is the legendary fish on Ultima Thule, added in #ffxiv patch 6.55.

📋 Prep
Sidereal Whale is one of only two fish which have three-fish intuition requirements. I recommend prepping for this well in advance of the Phallaina window, and while building 10 Angler’s Art Stacks. I also may recommend that fishers who are not comfortable with their GP management, read through this guide a few times to fully understand what to do before attempting.

Ahead of a Phallaina window, use Stardust catch 3 E.B.Es-9318 (longer straight-catch !! bites), and two Unbegotten from Limne 3-β. For Unbegotten, you’ll be mooching Horizon Events to catch, which are !! bites before 13s after casting. Unbegotten are longer !! bites off the Horizon Event mooch.

You’re pretty much going to be working towards both of these fish ahead of the Phallaina window, and do not need to do them in order. You can use the method for catching Horizon Event I mention in the next section to help with Unbegotten if you just want to Double Hook them once.

🎣Catching Horizon Events
After you’ve gotten your E.B.Es-9318 and Unbegotten, you’ll want to get a large-sized Horizon Event before the window opens at midnight. Horizon Events are a !! bite before 13s after casting, and share a bite type and overlapping window with Triaina. To start, use Prize Catch, then cast out with Stardust into Limne 3-β ahead of the Phallaina window. Only reel in !! bites before 13s, the sooner it bites, the more likely it is Horizon Event. If you do not get a bite by 13s, use Hook to reel in and cast back out.

If you do get a !! bite, use Hook to reel it in. If it’s a Horizon Event – neat, you’re done and ready for the window. If you get Triaina instead, you can use Surface Slap on it to ensure the next !! bite before 13s is a Horizon Event. Use Prize Catch again, then cast back out like before, reeling in any !! bites before 13s. Repeat this until you have a large-sized Horizon Event.

🎣Catching Phallaina and Sidereal Whale
Catching Sidereal Whale follows a similar method for catching Phallaina – the ‘hard’ part of Sidereal Whale’s Intuition, so the guidelines here will basically apply to catching both, but I’m writing this from the perspective of catching Phallaina. I’ll note differences at the end.

As 0:01 passes, mooch the Horizon Event. Only reel in !!! bites when you mooch the Horizon Event. If it’s a !!! bite, use Hook to catch a Phallaina (or Sidereal Whale during intuition). If it’s not a !!! bite, or the bite gets away, we’ll need to get another Horizon Event. You can do this by repeating the previous method for catching Horizon Events using Prize Catch and only reeling !! bites before 13s. You’re encouraged to use Thaliak’s Favor, Prize Catch, and Surface as needed to manage GP. I would recommend holding at least 5 Angler’s Art stacks, however, in case you get Intuition.

Continue to do this until you catch Phallaina (or Sidereal Whale) or the window closes.
If you catch Phallaina:
Select “Yes” if you had Collector’s Glove on, this will give you the 10 minute intuition for Sidereal Whale where you’ll repeat the steps above for catching and Mooching Horizon Events. At this point, use Angler’s Art stacks on Makeshift Bait (instead of using Prize catch) whenever Mooch II is on cool-down.

See Comments for Optimizations.

Good luck and happy fishing!

  1. 🧪Optimizations

The number of Horizon Events you get a window can vary with how they’re biting, but it is possible to increase your average catches with a few optimizations.

    Using Chum

It is possible to use Chum while going for Phallaina and Sidereal Whale and still have a comfortable amount of GP. How often you Chum will depend on your comfort level and where Mooch II and Cordial cool downs are. If you choose to Chum, reel in any !! bites before ~7s. Anything later you run the risk of E.B.E-9318 biting. Chum does make the reaction window a lot smaller than without, so the risk of mis-hooking E.B.E-9318 and even Unidentified Flying Biomass II goes up. However, mastering the use of Chum can reward you with more Horizon Events on average (because you get to cast more often).

    Using Angler’s Art Stacks

I did recommend using Angler’s Art stacks on Thaliak’s favor and being more aggressive with your Angler’s Art stack usage can lead to more GP to use on Chum or Prize Catch. It also means you run the risk of not being able to immediately access Makeshift Bait (which basically is 145s of letting your GP regen). It’s possible to rebuild stacks with Prize Catch, but be careful with how you approach.

    Whale Jail

“Whale Jail” is a term/method where you catch Phallaina in a window BEFORE Sidereal Whale’s window, but do NOT catch the rest of the fish for the intuition. Once you get a Phallaina, you wait in Ultima Thule until Sidereal Whale’s window to catch the rest of the intuition fish. It’s a way to ensure that during the window you’ll trigger the intuition and not risk a window on Phallaina’s low bite chance. See section on Fisher’s Intuition in A Fisher’s Guide to Eorzea: Volume 1 on what you can and can not do while building Fisher’s Intuition progress.
