Welcome. I started last month and haven't been able to turn off the pc since. The story gets so engaging. I'm crying and getting mad and falling in love all at once!
About the weapon and armor that the shop sell, yeah they have stats but stats from a lvl 1 piece of equipment, complete worthless damage wise, progression wise or related with the pay to win concept, so they are more a cosmetic thing ….. yeah i don't really understand why they keep putting stats in the cosmetic, i guess is a programing thing xd
FFXIV is a story oriented game. Plz don't skip it or you're going to have a significantly harder time enjoying it.
Take your time with the story or you're gonna miss what makes this game special compared to other MMORPGs. Skipping cutscenes and NPC conversations are the worst thing you can do in this game cos it dilutes all the reasons you do what you have to do for the MSQ.
The use of boosts is especially for those who already know the story and who make another character.
Don't skip the cutscenes. You've just missed out on why the game exists. Endwalker is 90% story. Literally.
Take your time to enjoy the story, the combat maybe slow at first but it'll pick up the pace real quick

FFXIV is RPG game with MMO features in it. And for RPG games, the most selling points for that is the storyline. honestly, it'll costs you a few hundreds of hours of just completing the MSQ alone.. but the story is great and you can be easily engaged with every characters and their developments. But the thing is, yeah.. the tap target combat is not really my style, so other than playing the MSQ and enjoying the story, the only other enjoyable thing is the extreme and savage raids(never tried savage because got no teams for that), minigames, and the glams for RPs. Other than that, like combat, I prefer play other with more action combat oriented mmo like BDO, coz why not? I dont worship games, i play them.
regarding the cash shop: the items have stats but they are meant to be used as glamour items. their stats do not apply if you do so. So there's no actual advantage in having those items. Same counts for minions and mounts. I'd agree with you on those story skipping and leveling books. Buying and using them lets you reach end game faster but also kills a huge part of amazing experience. Also they don't bring you right up to the end of your journey (lvl 80 which is 10 levels below max and/or end of the previous expansion, depending on what kind of skip item you are using).

"makes me want to play a real final fantasy" 🙄 I'm pretty sure it's generally agreed that FF14 has one of the best stories and is just as engaging as other mainline entries. People who don't take this game seriously are truly missing out.
Take your time and have fun, i also new into this game, been around 1 month with average playtime 10 hours a day everyday and i still on the shadowbringer expansion, the story is very very long and absolutely amazing! Still don't know about many other things because i've only following the main story quest.
