  1. To add how I get it:
With a normal mouse with two thumb buttons that have them programmable, you can set the modifiers to the two thumb buttons and the middle click. That's what I do: back button => Ctrl, forward button => Shift, midddle click => Alt.
The rest of the buttons are around the wasd. I set mine 4×3 as the keybinds. 1-2-3-4 is the first row, second is q-º-e-r (º is in UK keyboards I think as W is taken by movement) and the third row is z-x-c-f. Then the next hotbar is the same but with Ctrl+, then same with Shift+. That's enough for all jobs. Then extra stuff in another made again 4×3 but with Alt+. The point for improvement for me would be changing the º to something else as I'm finding I can't strafe right and press º at the same time (small hand with bad mobility).

Maybe if the mouse had lateral buttons for the mouse wheel I could bind them to strafing,

  2. I played on a controller for a really long time because I preferred the analog stick for intuitive movement with legacy controls, instead of moving the camera around constantly. The biggest downside was targeting party members as an AST main, because having to press down on Dpad 2-3 times to soft target tanks in a weave window, especially for multiple single-target OGCDs is really taxing and difficult. There are ways to make cards work with targeting macros but I couldn't just do that for each heal spell.

One day I thought as a joke "It'd be really nice if I could just target players with numpad and press buttons on that, but keep the analog movement of the controller.."
So after a few days of testing and iterating on that joke, I ended up playing half controller, half keyboard and I'm now fully proficient at it. L1 and L2 are the usual keyboard modifiers that change the numpad binds for buttons, arrow keys and a default camera position keybind handle camera.

Just goes to show that with enough creativity and determination, you can make any control scheme viable based on your preferences
