This raid series for sure ends with a bang.
Also until very recently the Ultimate version of these fights called The Epic of Alexander (Ultimate) or TEA used to be the hardest content in the game. I urge people to check it out especially since Alexander gets an extra special phase.
And don't worry, I don't understand everything that is going on either. Mechanics are straight up crazy.
One of them involves Alexander spawning an alternate timeline version of yourself that gets affected by future mechanics and die, so you have to check the actions of your alt self and avoid their mistakes.
One thing I like about you doing this all on a "fresh" character, and not New Game+ is that it feels like we're getting the achievements for watching! XD
Oh wow! I did this raid awhile ago and never knew the reason we survived that big beam was because of future us (I played WHM so I didn't go into the orb during that final boss fight). That's awesome! Also nice to see that dying at these raid boss fights is pretty much part of the experience. I went in blind my first go at them and got pretty anxious over messing up mechanics. Especially dying during that time stop mechanic over and over ^-^'' I would like to go back to the raids after catching up with MSQ and help some sprouts through it
SONIC BOOM. Quickthinx Allthoughts may view time as a flat circle, but your spoiler free lore comment has it on good authority that time isn't a strict progression from cause to effect, but actually, from a non-linear, non-subjective viewpoint, it's more of a big ball of wibbly wobbly timey wimey stuff. Durmin has the DTC on his side, and should the raid wipe, the Echo buff will increase all of their stats for the next run. You need only live, die, and repeat to eventually make progress on raids.
This raid may be about time, but let's talk about Active Time Maneuvers. Most of the ATMs in FFXIV come in two flavors. The first requires players to spam inputs to fill the bar before time runs out. The second requires players to spam inputs to keep a bar from draining before the time runs out. Sometimes failing these mechanics just results in a death, but later ones require the entire party to succeed to prevent a wipe.
When you have to cast Divine Judgement on intruders, why not just use time manipulation to summon yourself? There are only a couple of fights in FFXIV where you must use tank limit break to survive, and A12 is one of them! I guess I would clarify, each raid series is denoted by a letter, and the number of the specific fight. A stands for Alexander, with the numbers running 1-12. The addition of an S (as in A12S) denotes the Savage version of the fights. So far, the only raid series that does not use this notation are the Binding Coils of Bahamut.
Next Time, … well we don't know what Durmin is doing next episode.
"Well that didn't work"

I love doing this set of the Alexander raids… until I'm doing them, then I remember why I don't do them often. Welcome to the weird timescrew that is Alexander! The whole thing is very much "all according to keikaku."
That raid had some really good tunes!
@1:30:05 is the dream of electric sheep?
that last fight is extremely cool, awesome mechanics.
At 14:40, Dan mentions his damage is pretty bad. And it is. He's busy recording, commentating, explaining, and making sure we get a good show, and that all takes priority over playing optimally. You might notice, for instance, that he spends a significant time in fights without pressing buttons, or forgets to use some of his most powerful abilities.
I'm drawing attention to this, but not to call it out as a bad thing! Rather, it shows off one of the great strengths of this game. You don't have to play perfectly, in fact you don't even have to play well, to enjoy the majority of the content! I know that some people get anxious when playing in a group, because… what if they're not good enough? What if their dps is too low, or they forget their mitigations, or their healing comes out too slow and people die? What if their party members will yell at them for playing badly? This kind of thing might even keep people away from the game.
But this clearly shows that it's fine. You're not alone, and most of the content is balanced so one or two people can slack a little, and you'll get through it without any major issues anyway. So this message is for anyone who worries about this, or who has hesitated picking up the game or doing this sort of content because they fear they'll be a burden to others: it's fine! You're fine! It doesn't matter how good you are. What's important is that you have a good time.
42:42 Welcome to time travel, Cid.
Wow, this story was wild… and one of the best time travel stories I've ever heard/watched/played/read/etc (no I didn't play it, I'm just saying it's better than things I played).
Vault of Glass, eat your heart out. (In D2 lore, it's supposed to be a time machine – of the "pruning and editing timelines" variety – but the closest you get is sending information to past or future versions of the arena. Kind of a letdown, IMO)
1:45:17 Welcome to time travel, Wedge.
…Cruise Chaser?! That's a deep goddamn cut, alright – one that makes the Einhander ref in the Midgardsormr dungeon look like a paper cut.
So "coeurl" is pronounced "curl"?
I was wondering about that.
This was feeling like a Dr Who episode… and then fucking Wing Zero shows up?!
What a game.
EDIT: It's almost as bonkers as Steins;Gate, just… condensed, and with 1000% more mechs.
That bit at the end with Biggs and Wedge almost remembering something horrible happening is a nice nod to the fact that if you fail the bit where Alexander sends you back, you can technically wipe to the boss before you fight it. I kinda want to see if anything particular happens in that case. Easy enough to find on here, I suppose, but I really want to go through with an understanding party that lets me wipe to the time travel and let the Refurbisher rebuild itself. Nothing quite like experiencing it for yourself.
So about that horn. Don't it sound familiar? Didn't we encounter a similar object trying to make our "sword of light". .. remember Louisoix and what he could do with Tupsimati? This horn from Travanchet sounds like it is that rune, only turned up to 11, unable to be protected against or warded.
I'm also going to make a note here, That Y'Stola was THERE, at that time, on that quest, from the circle of knowing…. means she's lying about her age.
45:25 – Yeah, you can see the rest of the party playing in the background on the left. Didn't realize we were in shot right then. XD We were actually hiding back there to stay out of shot for the most part.
1:23:16 Don't forget Dan, one meow was no! So the cat actually told you it does NOT mean to behave
For such a super fancy high tech sanctuary, that looks super unsafe. Just because it's designed for and by genius smart people doesn't mean we can ignore OSHA regulations, people. Your big smartybrain won't save you from a long fall!
Every one of these Alexander mini-boss/boss songs absolutely SLAP!
A few thoughts of appreciation has occurred to me. Potential spoilers for other FF games.
Those "wings" of Alexander are a call back to FF9, arguably when Alexander played one of his biggest roles in FF to date!
That he be linked to the concept of time calls to mind Ultimecia, and in FF8 you can draw Alexander from the 2nd Edea fight while she was still possessing her!
XIV is so cool <3
I guess you could say that Alexander is a chrono trigger
I’d prefer if every leg of each raid were one episode, even if that means you need to take a break in between doing a raid and other FFXIV episodes. It’s just feels very…whole that each raid (8 or 24 man) be done in one week.
So, fun facts about Cruise Chaser!
It the first usage of an Active Time Maneuver in a battle! Those get used later on to great effect.
It's also a twofold reference!
The most obvious one is FFIX's Ark, this guy is literally Ark, even uses it's moves Propeller Wind and Eternal Darkness!
It's also Cruise Chaser Blassty, an old, OLD (as in 1986 old) game by Square, wherein you controlled the eponymous mech.
I gotta say I'm really happy you chose to let the fights last long enough to see how they work. Thank you!
1:41:19 – Woah that dawn breaking was so awesomely timed!!
Damn… this episode made me feel FEELS… way stronger than I was expecting to. Well done, FFXIV team. Good job.
I am getting Wakfu / Nox vibes from this whole Raid Series and I am all for it!
At the end they they say “cat” and not courl?
I do love the Alexander Prime fight, but I do have one minor issue with it: If you're not one of the players going into the portals, you're not going to understand how you were saved right before the fight. So there's a 50/50 shot of actually fully understanding the story. And with the DPS typically handling that (since they can kill the adds the fastest), if you like to play tank or healer….good luck.
The whole FF XIV series is great, the Alexander storyline a wonderful time. That said, don't push yourself too hard Dan! I can hear how much you've stressed your voice on this one.
The theme from the first phase of the final fight (Moebius) still gives me goosebumps to this day. Tanking Alex Prime back in its heyday was such a rush! Its a pity that even when you're level synced you're still more powerful than you probably were while decent gear when that raid was new. Still so fun to see again! Thanks for sacrificing your voice for us Dan!
I really like what this raid adds to primal lore.
Along with Ramuh, Alexander seems to be a genuinely good entity. Being brought down to the realm, and making sure it gets taken out for the sake of the world. It orchestrated the entire time jumble, just to makes sure time flowed properly, with as little damage as possible.
By the Twelve, 01:03:00 and the related mechanic in the final raid are one of my favorite bits in FFXIV. Mostly because I am a sucker for time travel shenanigans. The whole Alexander raid is my favorite but those two scenes in particular are just the cherries on top.
Also the fact that it plays an instrumental version of "forward and back" during the mechanic. Go forward, then get sent back so you can put one foot forward again.
All of it calculations showed it that it could save the world. And doom it. So it got struck by a Primal-level Analysis Paralysis. So it decided on betting on the one thing it couldn't calculate. It didn't fear the unknown, it bet on it. Sometimes, taking a leap into the unknown is better than suffering in your known cycle.
Dan… You are great at voicing cats.
I have enjoyed this raid series a ton!
Also, that was clearly an E.D.D., not an add.
That Quickthinx Terminator reference, made on a mission called "Judgement Day," in a story filled with time travel. Simply magnificent.
