Welcome to the community. Hope you enjoy the game as much as I have
good game.
I tried to play this a couple of years ago. I remember the community was very welcoming. The guild I joined while levelling was so nice and supportive. It made it very hard to leave when I realised at the time, the game just wasn't for me. I found the base game very dull and only managed to get to about level 40 or so. I struggled with poor story and very slow global combat timer. However, watching this, I though what the heck, let's give it another go. The expansions are supposed to be much much better and I bough stormbringers in a sale a while back.
I advise to change your movement to Legacy.
For how your class works is that you always want to be in Astral Fire(Fire orb orbiting you) since in this state, your damage are increased considerably! You cannot remain in Astral Fire mode for a long time since the more you cast your skills, the higher the mana will be consumed to powerup your Fire spells(your mana also DO NOT regenerate in this mode). You use Transpose to immediately go to Umbral Ice(Ice orb orbiting you) to regen your Mana, and once you recover, you use Transpose again to go Astral Fire and dish more damage.
I would say on your first class you should skip the side quests and focus on 1. the main story and 2. your class/job quests every few levels. The side quests worth doing your first time through are those marked with a blue icon and + symbol. These denote quests which unlock something: extra content, features, emotes, etc. Anything else you're better off skipping, or else you'll be stuck in one area forever. The main content gating in the game comes primarily from the main story quest line, and you should get enough XP from doing that, dungeons (starting around level 15, also unlocked via the main quest line), and your hunting log to see you through. Side quests become more useful when leveling a second class/job.
I think that you're someone who likes doing every quest you see and I respect that. But side quests in ARR can keep you bogged down and busy for ages on their own and while they can give you some nice extra stories/lore, they provide basically nothing in terms of forward momentum. Trust me that the MSQ (main story quest line) has tons of lore and story for you on its own.
