  1. I don't blame you for dipping out on ARR Hildy; I found it didn't hold my attention and was a little too long and drawn out when I first played it, so I also left it on pause for a while. From Heavensward on it definitely picks up and doesn't drag quite as much. That said, the ARR arc does end with some interesting Ul'Dah lore that I don't think you get anywhere else outside of, IIRC, the first variant dungeon.

The Rogue's weird slang is based on something called the Thieves' cant which was real and used by rogue-ish types in the past. There's an article on Wikipedia all about it, if you're curious.

  2. Hey WP, you mentioned skill names being inscrutable when showing off trick attack on rogue. Most skill names are references to abilities used by characters who share that job in previous final fantasy games or – more often than not – are names of skills in FFXI. I suppose it really isn't that surprising that even the skill names of jobs are referencing older games, that's definitely a final fantasy thing to do. If you're bored, you can look up skill names of any job in FFXIV that also has a parallel in FFXI and there is a very high chance that it will be present in some form.

Trick Attack, for example, is a skill for Thief in FFXI which transfers enmity to other party members. FFXI also has a Sneak Attack which more closely resembles Trick Attack in FFXIV.

According to the FFXIV wiki, Sneak Attack upgraded to Trick Attack in FFXIV but, as of 4.0, it is just Trick Attack (which then upgrades into something more ninja-like later).

In a previous entry in this series you also mentioned how gw2 has a more cohesive theme with its abilities. I'm going to speculate and I'm not sure if someone else commented about this, but I think it might be intentional that FFXIV uses different colors for icons on every ability on nearly every class. I suspect it has something to do with clarity for clickers or just generally glancing over at your hotbar. If you can recognize each skill's unique icon, it will be less confusing to quickly identify them when staring at your bar.

I'm not too much of a fan of the lack of theme either. It even extends to skill effects, there are many jobs that will begin to feel like a rainbow class (Pictomancer gets a pass). I have no doubt that you'll end up trying Reaper when you get to Endwalker, and you will notice real fast that Reaper has blue, red, green, and purple colored abilities. A minor gripe and it's easy to overlook, but it is a strange decision in my opinion.

Anyway, just wanted to toss that out there. I never comment on videos so I'll take this opportunity to say that I have watched all of your content for the last 13 years (and I do mean all of it) and I'm loving this series!

  3. This probably wouldn't come off as a big surprise when you look back on the quality of the rogue quest, but it's written by Ishikawa herself! THE Ishikawa that worked on Shadowbringers, DRK quest, raid storylines etc. I'm trying not to sound like a fanboy but I guess it's okay when it comes to her work. The rogue quest has incredible worldbuilding, great characterization (even the antagonists are endearing, yes even Milala, I like how unapologetic she is most of the time), tasteful, non-cringy humor, proper dark and gritty stuff. A well-balanced meal. I'm so glad that you've experienced it.
