  1. Mneme was a Muse of memory?
We still use that word for mnemonics
In here it probably just means "related to memory" since it's related to memories stored in a crystal
Meanwhile logos is reason/rationality, as opposite to mythos? Blabla FFXVI or Persona in general
I'm not sure why it's called Logos here. Durmin isn't exactly battling his enemies with facts and logic
Maybe it just means you need an understanding of mnemes to use the actions?
Logograms meanwhile are units of meaning in written languages, like words or kanji

  2. 17:10 more fun facts, this whole thing where lots of people are doing the Push Ups emote was not planned! I don’t remember who started it but lots of people then joined in. The reason I’m off to the right side doing Cheer Jump instead is bc I don’t have the Push Ups emote bc I kind of forget the content it’s behind exists lmfao.

  3. Ok, I am an hour and 3 minutes in, but Dan says something like "I am not done thanking" the organizers.
I cannot imagine he is going into the Baldesian Arsenal, BUT I am here for it if so.

  4. So now that all of the zones are seen and explored I want to talk a bit about the developmental history of Eureka cause its a very interesting look at game design for ongoing content. So Eureka was initially planned and designed to be implemented as part of Heavenward. However, a number of things lead to it being delayed in implementation until patch 4.25, at that point the first two zones, Anemos and Pagos had been designed and completed without any player feedback on the content. The reaction to Anemos was divided, about half the players loved that there was an open sand box zone to explore and quest in that had real progression goals. Others were less positive, especially those that joined late as even back then it was difficult to level to catch up with the trains. Anemos in particular is very content bare, very much a create your own fun type place for players. However, a lot people genuinely enjoyed the grind as a nice chill spot to hang out and interact with other players. You get a real sense of personality from all the zones and specific areas get burned in your brain. The initial feedback was hence, add something more to the zone and maybe make it easier to catch up.

Then Pagos came out, it was even grindier and featured significantly meaner monsters and navigation. An important aspect of all of this that Dan did not encounter is that on release all Eureka locked mounting privileges to those who had fully leveled already. Plus Pagos had very difficult to unlock teleport point (the teleport points are still level locked but have since been lowered). While there are interesting aspects of Pagos's design, they are not fun or improve in any of the ways player feedback was given. And that is because it designed before feedback was given. Pagos was nerfed twice while it was still the highest level Eureka zone and was nerfed several times after.

Pyros is where you can see the feedback come into play and for me my favorite zone. The Logos actions really add the counter balance to the general meanness of the monsters in Eureka, the dragons while still annoying are in fewer chokepoints and only really obnoxious if you are beelining through an area. Plus it was generally more navigable, no dropping down just to miss the spot where the boss monster spawned. It also has a number of very fun side objectives that while released in Pagos were more rewarding in Pyros, namely the bunnies and the expansion of the magia board quest.

Finally Hydatos is design wise pretty bland in my opinion, just a giant rectangle, but its not bad and its real saving a good portion of its map to be poked at in the next video. It certainly benefits from the feedback people gave and I am certain that "sprite island" the leveling trick that Dan described is the result of player ingenuity with the actions be acknowledged by the devs which is always nice.

However, Hydatos did have one major design issue, but that is a story for the set of comments. Its also frankly an issue that doesn't frequently happen anymore.

  5. 27:09 This is a fun little thing. Krile mentions one of her colleagues in the Students of Baldesion, Raha. Well, Durmin has actually met this person! His full name is G'raha Tia, and he was one of the key characters in the Crystal Tower raid series! I love that they link events and characters together like this, even if you hadn't actually done the Crystal Tower raids at this point (while it's not possible to reach this point without doing the Crystal Tower raids, it was prior to Shadowbringers, so when this content was new, I'm sure some people got to this point without touching the Crystal Tower stuff).

  6. Today on PlayFrame: More Eureka! And still no comments on it from me, I have no experience in there and while I have friends who could help me go through I'm a bit scared to ask. Maybe I could join the Playfriends one day…

…anyways, it's time for more mad rambling since I feel like I need to talk about something and I already mentioned the FF14 side of that Monster Hunter crossover last time… hey, crossovers! The most recent FF14 crossover event that is still ongoing is one that adds a new wing of the Gold Saucer, based on the game that took early-COVID gaming Youtube by storm and has been chugging along in the background ever since – Fall Guys!
The Fall Guys side of the crossover was a limited-time battle pass (unfortunately, I believe it's since expired) which contained various outfits based on characters from 14 – however, the FF14 side contains a micro-scale recreation of Fall Guys that you can play right now! It's technically a limited-time thing, but I believe the devs have said that it will be reran on occasion after the initial period ends – you can find it in the Gold Saucer if you're interested, as mentioned earlier.

Speaking of limited-time events, FF14's obligatory Christmas-adjacent holiday event starts on December 15th this year – I have no clue if Dan plans to cover it, as while it would be a neat diversion if he did it also is not part of Stormblood, but no matter whether or not we see holiday shenanigans with Durmin, I want to cap this comment off by wishing all of you a Merry Christmas (or equivalent local holiday)!
Next time: More Eureka? Probably. I'll laugh if it turns out I'm wrong and he's actually going right back to the MSQ next episode.

  7. – shout outs to Glaciar Volcanoes, that's peak location aesthetic, Ash is also a valid replacement
    – Ejika acting nice?! he must be thrilled for sure!
    – at this point both Pai-ros & Pee-ros are equally valid pronounciations
    – menemes! the DNA of the Szoul!!
    – floating rocks actually having a justification of what keeps them afloat is a strong contender
    – EJIKA, I WAS JOKING!!
    – i love the DTC Shenanigans

  8. We're back to the grind, Playfriends. This your spoiler free lore comment. Eureka continues!

1:38 – "I was done with cold weather" – Dan

1:50 – "Neat, I like this" – Dan. That was a fast turnabout!

Let's talk a bit about Gerolt Blackthorn. I've already spoken about him a bit, but we'll cover it again to catch you back up. Gerolt Blackthorn is quite possibly the finest smith in Eorzea, although he spends most of his days now a drunken mess, forging only kettles. Once upon a time, he and his beloved Rowena were going to strike out on their own, him fashioning the greatest items ever forged, and her handling the trade and monies. But they hailed from Ul'Dah, and to break free of their prior obligations, Rowena had taken funds from her previous employer. When Gerolt found this out, he took the fall for her (with her unawares at the time), cancelling their elopement. Rowena is now the trade shark of Eorzea, and uses Gerolt's many debts to pull him into her web. But she doesn't do it out of anger or spite, but because deep down, she still sees him as the genius artisan he once was (and of course, she makes a lot of money out of it). And the Relic Weapons are the proof of it. Each expansion has a series of Relic Weapons which serve as the fanciest, shiniest, and most powerful weapons that expansion has to offer (although Savage Raid weapons can certainly match them). These weapons, forged by Gerolt and one unlucky assistant, require extensive grinds to acquire, usually from doing specific FATEs and dungeons, each having a small chance to drop the materials you need. ARR had a whopping 9 steps to the Relic Weapons (spread between "Relic" and "Zodiac" weapons). Heavensward upped the ante on "well forged weapons" with the Anima weapons starting to have a mind of their own, imbued with the aether of your work. Heavensward only has 4 steps to the Anima weapons, but is sometimes considered more grueling. Stormblood's Eureka Weapons and Armor require a mountain of materials from the various monsters and sometimes the specific FATEs from each zone. The worst part is that some of these are at the end of FATE chains, requiring players to gather others and vanquish a series of high level monsters for a chance that the final one will drop 1 piece of the material needed. Eureka weapons and armor add the detail that, at the final stages, they can provide bonuses exclusive to Eureka, which the previous relics did not.

9:23 – "Mnemes" are named after one of the Greek Muses, Mneme. Mneme was the muse of memory, and has both a lake in Antarctica and a moon of Jupiter named after her. In this case, the usage here may be based on the works of Richard Semon, who proposed an external to internal experience when it came to memory and biology. Basically, he believed that memory would "etch" it self on our biology in someway, and that the experience could be brought to the forefront if the that physical state of record was affected. This is largely part of the Organic Memory theory, which has been discarded. In this case, the use of a soul crystal, or these mnemes, provide an external memory to the user that is not there own, but can be called upon. The term has nothing to do with "meme", which comes from a different Greek word "mimeme". The words are pronounced similarly in English, "m-NEE-m".

Logos actions are basically a customizable Duty Action Bar for Eureka. Logos actions depend on your role (although Paralyze L is usable by all roles), and help expand your toolkit in Eureka. In some ways, they enhance the work your role is already doing (reducing damage, healing, dealing damage, etc), or may compensate for a role's weakness.

"Why do they call it 'The Firing Chamber'?" "Because that's where Galuf put students that he's fired… shortly before they're launched into a volcano"

27:10 – Do you remember G'raha Tia? He who now slumbers within the Crystal Tower, after helping us prevent voidsent from pouring through the portal at its peak? He too was a Student of Baldesion, and here Krile calls him "Raha". In Seeker of the Sun traditions, this indicates that he and Krile are practically family.

34:45 – "400 years ago, on the planet Earth, workers who felt their livelihood threatened by automation flung their wooden shoes called 'sabot' into the machines to stop them." – Valeris, Star Trek – The Undiscovered Country

"SABOTAGE" – The Beastie Boys, as featured in Star Trek – Beyond

1:01:10 – Krile, that regulator is as big as you are. As big as Durmin is!

Let's also discuss a piece of content that is related to Eureka, but no longer exists. Eureka is designated a "Field Operation", the term for these instanced large area sections, with their own quests, FATEs, and aether networks. But Eureka wasn't the first of the Field Operations in the game, but it is the first players can gain access to now. Long ago, there was the hunting fields of The Diadem. The Diadem are a series of floating islands near Ishgard. Up to 72 players, both gatherers and combat jobs, could venture into The Diadem to kill monsters and gather resources. Eventually, a combat only version was released, and then in 3.55 (shortly before the release of Stormblood), they were replaced by Trials of the Fury and Trials of the Matron, which repurposed The Diadem, and would also have a Raid level monster as the instance boss. All of these were removed in patch 5.1, the first patch after the release of Shadowbringers. But The Diadem wasn't scrapped. We'll talk about what The Diadem is used for in the Post-Shadowbringers world when we get to patch 5.1.

Next time: Into the infamous raid: Baldesion Arsenal.

  10. Fun Trivia – At the beginning of this video, Durmin entered Pyros in a party rather than alone.

I was in this party, and we were supposed to group up AFTER entering Pyros. So while Dan was watching the intro cutscenes, the rest of us were scrambling for hiding spots. You can spot some of us at 2:12 briefly hiding around a corner, and I know others of our party were literally /playdead -ing behind a couple of boxes to not clog up the view.

Was a hilarious moment, one of many I and the other Geese will cherish for a while.

  11. Thank you for doing all of this. I have played all the way through the MSQ and completed many and more of the side content, but I have never touched this content. It is really interesting to see the story for it, and I appreciate not having to do the grind to get that story.

  12. The thing I love most about FFXIV?

When large groups of players gather together for an activity, and you start seeing folks traveling by bus/picnic whale/space whale/prestige mounts. It's one of the reasons why I love The Hunt in FFXIV, or when an FC is power-leveling some sprouts.

Would be great if Dan included the footage if Durmin ever catches a hunt train flying overhead in the wild.

  13. On the one hand: The character moments with Krile are really nice to see here, I always find myself kinda missing her when she's stuck on the sidelines when we're working with the other scions.
On the other hand: I still do not regret peacing out of actually playing Eureka; they stopped making games like FFXI for a reason! Like, trying to be FFXI-2 was one of the main reasons XIV 1.0 faceplanted so badly!
And now I'm getting irrationally angry at Eureka's existence like I tended to back when Stormblood was current so I'm gonna shut up now!

  14. 4:19 Tell me you're joking… that was terrible lying.
8:48 You literally just snubbed him before he could tell you he was going to sell you weapons. I'd have let the WoL wander off, and just given them sass later.
25:26 Anyone else getting mental warning sirens?
    34:21 I'm sure this is fine…
35:12 Yea, not surprised at all. Liberal use of paladin-y sounding stuff is kind of a red flag.
35:33 Mr. "I earned it!" trying to get his own "blessing"…
36:01 Except that Durmin is only your enemy because you look down on him because of his gift. Usually Durmin's enemies are… just like you. Arrogant bastards trying to wield powers they don't comprehend.
36:44 Too late. His bias led to his downfall, and like a lot of cults, Eureka knew juuust who to pick.
39:54 This is why he fell. He was always looking to fight over the Echo.
