  1. While the story beats are remarkable different, the circumstances of why the player ends up traveling to a different world in Shadowlands is shockingly similar to Shadowbringers.

A crisis threatens to engulf the game world as the player knows it (The 8th Umbral calamity/The Jailer's convoluted as all hell plan to rewrite the laws of reality I guess.) and in order to stop it they must travel to a different world entirely (Nordvrandt/The Shadowlands) at the behest of an old friend/ally (G'raha Tia/Bolvar)

Once they arrive they see the new world they are in is itself in peril and is teetering dangerously close to a near total collapse thanks to machinations of an evil despot and the ancient evil pulling the strings behind it all (Vauthry and Emet Selch/Denathrius and Zovaal)

Along the way to stop these threats and save the new world alongside their own they end discovering the ancient, eldritch truth of the creation of their worlds and their very lives (The Final Days, Zodiark's creation and the great sundering/Zerith Mortis, the afterlife, the machine of death, The Primus etc. etc.)

With mild differences here and there, Denuser basically ripped off FFXIV

  2. It is good to keep in mind for the Shadowbringers/Shadowlands Title thing: even before the current wave of new players, mostly WoW Refugees, the Game was allready doing very well. While i don't know the exact Numbers, I have read that by the time Shadowbringers was announced, and while it may not have been as big and known as today, it was allready one of WoW's biggest competitors.

  3. I will say that Final Fantasy has also done this too. For example Cataclysm came out in 2010 and a realm reborn in 2013. Both used a big dragon to destroy and remake their worlds. The Final fantasy Devs have even said they gained insights from WoW. So it goes both ways. Nowadays no game is truly original but they shouldn't be exact carbon copies of each other which you alluded to earlier.

  4. Don't overestimate the passion people have. Here's what I'm guessing. For cutscenes.

Whoever come up with a story tell one person to cut a motion board to test the scene out of footages on the internet to see roughly how it will played out mood wise, to pitch possible story to the upper management.

Then whoever made the motion board try to remember what scene they think have the same feeling from their experience, search it on youtube, cut it to a full cutscene. If that person play FFXIV, there you go, a lot of cutscenes and ideas slap into the motion board. I even remember the stormblood scene during Sylvanas & Banshee trailer few weeks back.

This probably happens a lot of times. that it suck your passion dry, and just do whatever the one who came up with the story want. Sometimes the brief is "It's up to your interpretation" or "I believe in your judgement" while the script probably so vague like "Anduin breaks the jailer's domination". So just slap some scenes you remember out of your head. It's never the final anyway. And the one who animate just need to change some camera angles or something so it looks different.

After showing few times, somehow the one that's chosen is the one with FFXIV footage. The upper management "Yeah, looks cool, that works. We should use Varian and Saurfang here, they are the most connected to anduin".

Confused, go tell the animator to make the rough scene. "it doesn't make sense, but the upper management already approved of it."

The animation department trying to make sense of the story/motion board, slap together the animation, and interpret it in a way it make sense (animation wise) not actual sense. "I don't know, The upper management want me to make exactly like this"

    For non cutscenes
"Yeah let's do that, we'll just feign ignorance if we get caught. Just tell everyone we got the inspiration from their source of inspiration as well, It's not only FFXIV who do this things. other things as well"

  5. normally yoshi-p would consider these long lists of plagiarism as the highest forms of flattery (especially as a wow fan himself), but when wow makes it into an embarrassingly bad and shallow story that destroys 20 years of lore, story narrative, world building, and retcons everything that wont work with its own incredibly skewed narrative, it just makes the wow devs look bad.

i havent played wow since cataclysm but i have been keeping track of its story while playing ffxiv, and i have to say as an artist myself (and a storyteller in practice) i believe that its ok to plagiarize as long as you make you own version different enough and good enough to make it intriguing. But if you have to destroy half (or more) the existing lore of your own story to make it work, then it can never be good.

  6. Almost all of these are needlessly oversimplified, now I'm saying this as a FFXIV player, don't play WoW but some are pretty silly. Like the way the ancients speak, having an ancient race speak in a melodical alien language is pretty bog standard, biblical angels had that down WAY BEFORE any current fiction.

Now if the Jailer's helm had a little white mask on it AND the upward sweeping horns that would be one thing, but literally they both just have upward sweeping horns.

The armors look NOTHING alike, which is really bad for WoW when Zenos has this amazing badass armor and their big reality ending bad guy is just in some dull as shit silvery irony crap. At least make the main bad guy look cool, ya know? The Jailer is just so boring to look at and even his death is stupid bullshit, if WoW is going to copy they may as well copy the good parts of FFXIV's story rather than a couple visual elements.
