  1. Ooh, I didn’t know there was a stopgap for the Reconstruction either! I didn’t get mine done until after Endwalker so that was a significant time past then. Mostly bc I had basically skipped over this part oopsie. But now I’m learning things alongside Dan it seems like lol.

  2. Playfriends, it's time to get to business. Of rebuilding Doma! This is your spoiler free lore comment!

While Durmin is rebuilding the Enclave, I thought maybe we'd talk about some stories that Durmin won't experience. The continuing adventures of crafting and gathering! After all, that's who's doing the bulk of the work in Doma, the local artisans and producers.

I've previously covered what the Goldsmiths are up to, teaching at the new artisan academy at Rhalgr's Reach. Stormblood's quests tend to be split between Ala Mhigo and Doma, as the MSQ was. Let's cover the soap operas that are the Blacksmith and Weaver quests, and since we've got farmers, we'll also do the Botanist quest!

The Blacksmiths of Naldiq & Vymelli have gained significant renown, partially because of the your efforts to reforge the kit of the impoverished House Jervaint in Ishgard. Baroness Laurisse's accolades have allowed her to endorse your craftsmanship, and that word has even reached Doma! A new recruit has arrived, Sekka. Sekka comes from a prestigious Kugane metal working school, with her father as the head of the workshop. She offers her family's techniques in exchange for Eorzean training. While the deal is struck, Her initial impressions are far from Guildmaster Brithael expectations, though. She frequently blows off the basic scutwork that is required to run the guild, and when she receives a commission, she disregards the requirements of the customer and produces what she imagines will fulfill their need. Brithael needs your help to set a proper example and correct Sekka's fundamental errors in temperament. After a rough start, Sekka starts to come around to Brithael's methods, and a custom set of gear helps her achieve new heights. But soon, a new commission comes in from the Kugane. A man named Shinto is at the docks and has a mangled lump of rusted iron, and offers a king's ransom for you to forge a katana from it. After extensive work with Brithael, you manage to produce a katana for his inspection. As the customer appears to inspect your creation, Sekka blows his cover: Shinto is her father, head of his workshop. Shinto declares that your product is terrible, riddled with errors, and would be subpar for even the 3rd rate Hingan forges… but considering he provided you with detritus as material, the fact that you produced something in the first place marks you as a master. If you haven't picked up on the metaphor, his opinion of your katana and his daughter is the same. Shinto reveals that Sekka was not dispatched to learn from Brithael. She was forbidden to learn in Kugane forges after multiple failed attempts under her father. Shinto is here to bring his daughter home and end her ambitions. After conferring among yourselves and doing a bit of investigation, you and Brithael help equip Sekka with the tools she needs to gain her father's eye once more, and she forges a katana. Not just to showcase her new skills but to present her pure determination. And her father is impressed. Not with the katana, it's barely passable, but with Sekka. She is a smith forged anew. Shinto will permit Sekka to continue learning the art of the forge under one condition: she wins a contest of producing a blade for a commission. Her opponent? You (with Brithael supervising)! And in the Kugane forge, the two competitors show off their blades. Your katana is splendid, but Sekka's is simple and basic. When her father asks if she's even taking this seriously, Sekka clarifies that the commission is for training blades for a lord's retainers. They need to be light and simple so that they can be used day in and day out. Shinto is proud of his daughter, but due to the expectations of his client, he must award you the victory. Shinto reveals what caused him to give up on his daughter: her every act in the forge had been to impress him, rather than to actually learn the craft, no matter how much he tried to correct her mindset. He welcomes his daughter home as his newest apprentice, and promises to continue to the exchange of techniques with Brithael. But just as everyone reaches their happy ending, Sekka drops a bombshell that she cannot hold back any longer. For every moment that he supported her, that he was patient with her and guided her, Sekka LOVES Brithael. This, of course, catches everyone by surprise. Shinto now demands to know just what Brithael has been doing with his daughter at the forge, and reaches for your freshly made masterwork katana to begin his interrogation. Brithael's preservation instinct kicks in and and he makes a beeline for the first ship to leave Kugane. When you catch back up to him in Limsa, he is presented with a stack of love letters, all from Sekka.

The Weaver's guild is playing host to a Hingan delegation wishing to see the many styles of Eorzea! At a formal ball, they spy a classic Ishgardian style being worn by Lady Laniaitte of the Rose Knights (she's not happy to be forced into this bustle at the ball, but even more infuriated that she's being escorted by the foppish Emmanellain). Days later, you receive a request to come to Kugane. There, Keimei commissions the bustle he saw at the ball for his favorite geiko, Kotocho. This is actually Kotocho's request, as she intends to use foreign fashion to boost her ascendency to the top of the Hanamachi's geiko. And the plan works, earning the ire of the current top of the geiko, Kototsuru. Kototsuru accuses Kotocho of using fad fashions to compensate her lack of skill at the traditional dances, and challenges her to a "duel" of sorts. The loser will be reduced to a basic apprentice, and the winner the star of the Hanamachi. Kotocho eagerly pushes forward and commissions a new outfit from you, a Thavnarian dancer's dress. The dress certainly turns heads, but quickly proves to be her downfall. The outfit shows far more skin that Kotocho is used to, and a sudden bout of stage fright robs her of all her skills. Reduced back to the beginning, Kotocho still strives on, eventually regaining some of her status and is invited to participate in the annual Kugane-odori, which showcases the best geiko in the city. But oddly, with her return almost complete, Kotocho loses all motivation. She reveals that it is because her rival, Kototsuru, has announced her engagement and will not participate in the Kugane-odori, instead going into retirement. Kototsuru's dances were what sparked Kotocho's desire to become the geiko she is, and she fears that now she can never live up to the standard she sought to emulate. Keimei's quick thinking and connections gets you an audience with Kototsuru, where you plead with her to participate. Kototsuru acquiesces to conduct one final dance for the crowds, under one condition: two geiko must take to the stage, and her opposite must be Kotocho. Kotocho now has the terrifying chance at her dream: to share the stage with the legendary Kototsuru, but that means she must match her mentor and rival's beauty and grace. Kotocho has one last commission for you: two traditional kimono to showcase the two geiko. The dance entrances the entire audience, and Kotocho is hailed as the new lead geiko. Kototsuru reveals that she thought Kotocho could be her successor, and seeing her resort to fad fashions instead of perfecting her dances nearly broke her heart. But in the end, both women got what the wanted, and all of Kugane has benefited. Not least of all Keimei, who's fashion house full of orders for outfits both traditional and foreign.

Finally, let's talk farming. The Botanist's Guild in Gridania have a request for a master botanist, and after helping Ishgard resolve some of their food production woes, you're the adventurer for the job. This request sees you go back to Idlyshire, where Edgyth needs your help to determine why her efforts at producing a signature crop for the young town has been failing. Edgyth is an amateur botanist, but wants to put Idlyshire on the map for produce. After some work, you and Fufucha come up with just the thing she wants: a new hybrid breed of papoto (that's a potato). After the new varietal is germinated, Edgyth watches in horror as her crop withers. With a lot of reading, chemistry, and consults, Edgyth realizes that the soil in Idlyshire has been infested with eelworms; the new papotos never stood a chance. While all are ready to give up on the new crop, Edgyth perseveres and comes to a realization. To fight a pest, she must use pest repellent, and there are old accounts of a flower that would ward off eelworms. A little bit of asking around and you find out Edgyth's secret flower is called Rhalgr's Streak, and it can be found in the highest peaks of Ala Mhigo. After finding your way into the Royal Hunting Grounds (which actually requires quite a winding trek, if you haven't already been there and obtained the requisite aether nodes for flight), you bring Edgyth her bounty. Not long after, the next crop of Idlyshire papotos are thriving and the eelworms have retreated. Of course, Idlyshire now has to contend with the unique stench of the Rhalgr's Streak flowers, but having a set of produce to call their own is worth it. Edgyth is quick to pass on the praise, as she's just an amateur Botanist, but you and Fufucha are quick to point out that Edgyth has hybridized a new varietal of papoto and found a natural solution to pest issue: these are the hallmarks of a Professional Botanist. Consulting with other botanists and professionals doesn't diminish her achievement, cooperation is part of the job. Fufucha hands over a set of Botanist gear and the official recognition from Gridania: Edgyth is a Botanist of the guild. She's more than earned her place there.

When we return to Doma, we'll pick up on some more crafting and gathering questlines. But next time, I think we're headed to a Land of Mystery…

  3. Oh that's interesting. I had no idea the Doman Enclave locked reconstruction progression if you put off MSQ for too long. And my memory of the projects was slightly off. Didn't quite remember the Shazenkai office or the Demense…

  4. Glad to see you're taking the time to show the Doman Restoration. Some of my favorite content in FFXIV is when you gradually see noticeable changes. Makes it feel more real and alive for me

Bit of a tangent, but a few years ago I played a game called Sakuna, and ever since then, I came to appreciate the process of rice farming more as well as appreciate scenic locations like rice terraces, so it's nice to see here
