  1. Dawntrail spoilers from the trailer-

It's very funny that Alphinaud isn't the one to become a Paintomancer. Despite his obvious skill, his art is too focused on replicating realism and lacks artistic liberty and inspiration.

  2. So fun wee thing, Colin Ryan (Aliphie's VA) was at a con on Glasgow doing a panel with Bethan Walker (Alisaie's VA). When asked for a favourite line, he said the line at 29:28 was it. It's a hard one to top.

  3. 27:07 Our boy! It would horrify many to stand up to an unquestioned tyrannical soul, but Alphinaud did so with a wholly unsympathetic audience and strode on out without looking back. And for the sake of someone who'd cheated him! A long way he's come….

  4. Weird…
I find it delightful that the show of decadence and delusion is shown very viscerally through the visual representation, but Dan considers it a "shortcut"? I don't find it offensive to use volume in ones person to show the nature of place their living. I'm glad they gave Mrs. Dulia the care of rafting a very recognizable design (unlike the rest of the nobles)… what dissapoints me is that there's not much more of that, extremes of physique, both fat and scrawny are acceptable representations in shows of decadence, tools for artists, not shortcuts (But I also understand that there's limitations in this media).
Probably I'm missing the point of what Dan said about this, but that's my point of view as an artist and worldbuilder, seeker of beauty in all and everything, apprecciator of the ugliness of gold and standards and the beauty of decay and the organic.

  5. The Chais are a good pair of characters. It takes a moment to cut through the initial impression of gluttonous fools that you start off having when entering Eulmore, but the depth is there from the beginning. It's also striking to see just how fast Dulia becomes an ally.

We'll see what comes of them as the story progresses, but they're good beans to look out for!

  6. 17:41 This whole exchange, talking about Ascension, almost made me call out, "Alphinaud! I need an adult!"

Eulmore really sells how wrong everything feels. I love it.

32:44 Isn't it interesting, in a town full of pomp, circumstance, and ignorant bliss, it is the vision that Alphinaud made, and how real it was, that moved Dulia-Chai to tears.

  7. …I am slightly sad my like on this moved it from 69. Haha

Amazing work as always- so excited to re witness one of my favorite stories of all time! Thanks for all the insane work a day time you, Carrie and your XIV crew put into this series Dan!

  8. Playfriends, surely this fancy town is fine, right? It's fiiiine. This is your spoiler free lore comment.

1:17 – Welcome to the Beehive! If you're reminded of FF7's Honeybee Inn, that's the point! While FF7's Honeybee Inn is a brothel, the Beehive is closer to FF7R's Honeybee Inn, a nightclub. If the dancers and poles weren't obvious, the Beehive is a strip club, except the limitations of the game's technology and age rating means the skimpy clothes stay on. And yes, this is where the visuals from JoCat's "positionals" joke comes from.

5:31 – Dan, we knew you won at cards since Story Mode did Chain of Memories. Speaking of cards, other than Triple Triad, there's high/low! This isn't a card game so much as a bonus mechanic in Treasure Dungeons. It doesn't quite work like the game that was just demonstrated. The Treasure Dungeon will show you a card, and you guess if the next card is high or low. You can push your luck for a bigger payout, or stop at any moment to take your bonus loot.

8:08 – These discussions show part of why Eulmore is doing so well. While the Eulmoran Army still operates, they're not taking constant losses defending the city from Sin Eaters. Concerns about security are nearly nonexistent, so all efforts and resources can be redirected to the comforts of the residents.

8:45 – I think this is supposed to be a schedule of the dancers/singers at the Beehive.

12:44 – If you're concerned about the "Nuts Board", it's the Shadowbringers/Endwalker version of the Hunt Boards. The bounties are set by "Clan Nutsy", named after their leader. Clan Nutsy is a reference to the protagonist group from Tactics Advance. And the Hunt reward currency are "sacks of nuts".

16:05 – You can check out any time you want, but you can never leave…

17:45 – The Free Citizens care for their Bonded, some of them well after their usefulness has passed. But Ascension sounds like a suspect end for folks…

21:40 – Hooboy, Chai-Nuzz is not a fan of Gustave Courbet.

24:35 – Looks like Kai-Shirr wasn't as good of a merchant as Alphinaud had thought he would be.

28:07 – "So this is how liberty dies – with thunderous applause" – Padme Amidala

29:29 – And THAT is how you crit with Vicious Mockery, D&D players!

33:00 – "I love it!, let's hang it in our gallery!" "… yes, dear."

33:45 – Lady Chai's offer is the game's way of explaining how you can waltz through the gates of Eulmore, even if the ruler has us on the naughty list.

Well Playfriends, we now know the current state of the island of Kholusia. Eulmore is a powerful city state ruled by a despot who promises unlimited pleasures and security for his chosen. They do not contend with Sin Eaters, but rather tame them. But we'll have to shelve our thoughts on this place.

    Next time: To Alisaie!

    Voice Cast:

Edward Dogliani, Rattleshirt from Game of Thrones, as Vauthry

  9. I'm surprised that we had a story of rich and poor people coexisting and it turns out not all the rich folks are pure evil hell bent of diminishing the poor in any way.
Many of Eulmore's citizens are quite nice… It's its leader that's the evil one.

  10. Episode Spoilers:

The unique plus sized character model character of Lady Chia could have easily been a stereotypical let-them-eat-cake caricature, simple shorthand for greed and sloth. But she isn't, she is genuinely sweet, if somewhat sheltered by her "means well" husband who does seem to genuinely be actively in love with her. Both infantilised by the culture of the city under the outside threat of the end times throwing everyone's sense of reality askew, that nuance shines through in only a few short scenes but it shows the writers have restraint and they are confident in their world building as well the connections between surrounding characters to inform the subtleties of her character in an organic way. As if she is plus sized to lampshade the classic expectation of the character on first sight. I do wish these writers would give the same consideration and effort to all their characters, or are we just going to forget and let the fat man feed the little weeping warbler to the sineaters?

  11. I see Alphinaud's been taking lessons from Y'shtola when it comes to delivering sick burns…

on another note, it doesn't cease to amuse me that it took Vauthry long enough to realize he'd been insulted that not only can you practically HEAR the dial-up tone playing, but that it also takes long enough that we're able to get from probably one of the highest parts of Eulmore all the way back down to ground level *without anyone flagging us down*.

Granted, that latter part could probably be explained by the local aethernet, but I find it funnier to imagine that we just took the stairs.

  12. The moment in the Beehive where the warrior of light has to dance–I laughed so hard when my female Roegadyn had to do that. Because it is the perfect awkward "oh gods I don't want to do this, is this anything, please let me stop"
