  1. 5:58 I'd love to read a whole book written like Ardbert's narrations. The writing style is wonderfully evocative in a way I don't think Stormblood and Heavensward quite reached with their own respective narrations.

  2. Ah, Kholusia.

On my own journey through the First, it was the point I truly realized just how much of a mirror it was to the Source – I started in Limsa Lominsa, meaning I naturally spent quite a lot of time in La Noscea (which is, if you hadn't already guessed from me having just said it, effectively what Kholusia is a copy of) and seeing a landscape so familiar to me soaked in the unending light just felt *wrong*.

What came afterwards did NOT ease that feeling of wrongness at all – although Alphinaud's presence certainly helped with matters of moral support, bless that boy's heart.

  3. Interesting thing about the weather and lighting being consistent, the cutscene team agrees. According to Yoshida it was a lot easier to write and frame the cutscenes knowing that there was a consistent weather and time of day.

  4. I love the First so much… If my WoL ever retires she'd probably settle in Lakeland. Or either Sharlayan settlement since they're basically a copy/paste of the Pacific Northwest ♥

  5. Playfriends, we're off to the island life! This is your spoiler free lore comment.

3:40 – If you think Amaro are cute, you can get one as a mount! Bad news, getting an amaro mount requires leveling every combat job available in Shadowbringers (other than Blue Mage) to level 80. We'll learn some important about amaro later, but they're very different than chocobo. They were bred from a variety of creatures to produce an ideal companion by the Ronkans in an ancient era.

10:18 – Kholusia doesn't just feel like an alternate universe La Noscea. It IS alternate universe La Noscea, given that the map of Norvrandt is almost identical to Eorzea. Something that is very apparent when comparing La Noscea to Kholusia is the size of the zone. When you combine all the pieces of La Noscea together, the total size isn't that far off from Kholusia. This is the difference that 6 years of development makes. Instead of a mulitple zones broken up to make an area, they can just drop the whole area as a single zone.

14:55 – It's a whole new world and we're killing insects for reputation all over again.

21:35 – For a weapon that first showed up in an optional questline in early Stormblood, Black Rose is a critical part of the main story.

25:18 – FFXIV has "skywatchers" who provide weather forecasts for the area. They even have them here on the First. Of course, they all state that their jobs are rather simple for the last century. The weather is "Everlasting Light", all the time.

27:03 – Take note of this Sin Eater's name: "Forgiven Cowardice". This will be a theme for Sin Eaters, their names tend to correspond to a type of "sin".

34:45 – Alphinaud points out that the poor and needy are only used for their skills, but as the old woman noted, Eulmore provides more than just a cushy life. It provides safety. And in a world rife with sin eaters, that's something that is in short supply.

Ordinarily I would go on about what a new region was like prior to the Flood of Light, but Eulmore has stood for some time, and we'll learn more about it as Alphinaud takes us on our tour of Kholusia.

I will state that, prior to the reduction in aether currents, there was one on an outlying shack here in Gatetown. It was a little tricky to get to, you had to hop your way to it from a nearby rock and structure.

    Next time:

Exploring more of Kholusia and trying to enter the City of Final Pleasures.

  6. 33:35 Oh, fuck me, it's them… FF likes to play with references, and this is a pretty clear reference to, well, a couple of thing, but most clearly Zorn and Thorn, the villainous jesters from FFIX (who nonetheless had a balling theme song). not that the theme here isn't great too- holy crap, it is Dancing Calibrina, although we've seen her already back during HW. Lord, it just makes the scene at the Open Arms that much more unsettling.

(sees the meol, tries not to think of how much it looks like a brain)

  7. 11:20 it should be noted that "The Source" referred to here is not the alternate reality that The Scions are from, but a lake that is near The Chrystarium. The eponymous lake of Lakeland.

From a Watsonian perspective, it makes sense. It is the source of many rivers that flow from it iirc. It having the same name as a different reality is just a coincidence.

But from a Doylist perspective, it is frustrating that the game does this. This is why you very rarely see characters in fiction with the same name as other characters, so clarity is always preserved. They don't do that here and I have no idea why.

  8. My dreams look like that, the lighting is always off and makes me uneasy, the eclipse made my brain freak out because it looked so similar to those sickly dreamscapes I visit when I'm asleep.
I'd like to think someone in the development team has something similar and that's how the lighting of that wolrd was inspired.

  9. 10:41 I can't say it looks vaguely familiar in the way you're describing. Maybe if I had played FF14 for months, but not in this LP.
13:56 Ale and Mead? My kind of place, if it's even half good.
14:13 How'd I know Dan was gonna pick water?
22:24 More detail? Absolutely. Comprehendably? Maybe!
31:00 Dan, I have terrible news. That's not an iguana, that's a chameleon.
