The biggest problem is FF does a few things that make this almost very impossible for people with long outstanding goals.
S ranks and Fish are on timers, Meaning if you miss them the longer you have to wait. The more you wait, the more opportunities you miss out on. S ranks have an immense 5k to grind out. Meaning that you don't have the time to just take a break. Fish having 5 minute windows in a 1 month span is pretty BS, and if you miss that window you have to wait another month. It takes 7.5 years to do some of these grinds with leves. Weekly things that take almost 2 years to do extend out even longer if you aren't doing them. These things stack up and cause more and more problems as time goes on. Let alone housing requiring you to stay subbed or you lose your house, or FC's losing leadership. Many of achievements take years to complete for no reason whatsoever just to inflate playtime. You ask the question "What is there to do after you obtain said goal", and I raise you two questions in return
What if someone's enjoyment is collecting and completing everything, and they get their serotonin from completing and hard or tedious grind? and If it is okay to take a break because the content will always be there, why should the content be timegated out to years for no reason whatsoever? It wouldn't feel so bad to take a break if the way the developers made the game wasn't either take a break because the grinds are too much or never feel like you can cause the grinds are too much.
I have nearing 300 days of playtime and i took some time off playing other games. I left alone msq, so i have bigger meal to eat when i come back, i left my bicolor farming, i left my sheep herd lonely… side for raiding, i felt little incentive to play.
Last patch i came back, relaxed, rested, like coming home from holidays. And among all new content i went straight to… fishing. Because i can! Nothing rushes me. I feel joy playing ffxiv again, every single part of it. I once again embrace freshbies in roulettes, play tetris with crafting recipees, assemble glams. It never went anywhere!
this came at a good time for me, I'm currently taking a break from the game, and this video just let me know I'm good to continue that break, despite the new patch drop
Ouf I feel that. I’ve recently just gone past 10k hours myself, am only raid logging, and don’t have time for MSQ because I’m too tired from work, so I’ve been forcing myself to do a few cutscenes for the little time I have. I’m definitely not feeling it this patch and that’s okay. But yeah, once my static clears the current fight we’re progging, I think I’ll finally take that long overdue break.
its fine, and in fact healthy, to take a break from anything no one thing should be your entire hobby go play some other games, read a book, go outside experience something new. your old favorites will always be waiting for you.
I've only put in around 350 hours in the past couple months but just converted from free trial and paid my first one month sub. Already hitting a wall in terms of getting much enjoyment as I previously did. I feel like I just want to do the MSQ but there's a million sidequests I should do first to get the most out of it, but then I also have to get all my dailies in and fit all this in with a work and life schedule. Coming down to maybe I need to take a week or two off and get back in and hope it's starting to feel like less of a chore.
If I do five mentors per day – I would reach the mount in one year, but occasional Praetorium kills all motivation…
