  1. For words derived from German, the 'pronounce the second letter of the ie/ei combination' rule actually works!
Edelstein's name is just the german word for 'gem', and is pronounced 'Eh-del-shtine', with a little emphasis on the first sylable ^^

  2. 23:14 I'm not 100% certain what kind of language FF14 is trying to emulate with his name, but that's indeed exactly how the 'ei' and 'ie' are pronounced in Dutch, so that's also how I read those words

  3. A bunch of commenters have already answered your question, but seeing as I have an "ie" in my name and everyone I knew growing up seemed to get it wrong, I feel compelled to chime in:
"ei" sounds like the word "pine"
"ie" sounds like the word "feel"

  4. Dangit…I really liked Moenbryda…
For the short time she was here she showed so much character and personality, they did a great job of writing her. I just wished we got to spent more time with her

Edit: okay yeah i was straight up crying at the end there. The writing is getting really good

  5. 23:10 I'm probably not the first to answer this, but since I'm fluent in German and a linguist I can confirm you are correct! When it comes to the Hyur, the developers tended towards old Germanic names, to invoke the feeling of Old English. And if those names are pronounced using German pronunciation*, for ie and ei you can use the shortcut you mentioned. Essentially, you just say the name of the second vowel. Ei is a diphthong, meaning it is basically two vowels being pronounced together, and in English those vowels would be a and e, so like height, might, fight. Ie is not a diphthong, but just a single vowel sound, in English ee, like in fiend, keen, mean. And the good news is that unlike in English (where we spell things the same but pronounce them differently quite often), there is a strict(er) correspondence between orthography (writing) and pronunciation in German. So every time you see ei or ie together, you can just rely on this shortcut.

*Old English pronunciation is actually a bit different – first off English hadn't standardized so it varied from dialect to dialect, and then even in West Saxon the vowels were totally different from modern German, ei is not a diphthong so if it occurred in a word (I'm not super familiar with phonotactics in Old English) it's pronunciation would depend on the word (specifically on whether the vowels are long or short, in this case stressed or unstressed), whereas ie is actually two separate diphthongs (also due to vowel length).

  6. Edelstein is "gemstone" in german. If that is the reference, it's pronounced edl-shtain, where "sh" is pronounced like in "shard" for example, and with a strong "t".

  7. Ok this is the moment in the story that has always bugged me. They have the siphon. They have shown that it works. It's right there! Yet Moenbryda sacrifices herself in what is one of the most preventable deaths in the whole game. It's honestly my least favourite moment in the story.

  8. A few days ago I had my first Chrysalis fight and it went quite poorly. Four wipes. Everyone but tanks died to meteors in the second phase. At the fifth attempt I (a scholar) somehow survived with them, resurrected the white mage and we managed to pull through. The only time I wiped more times was at extreme Ramuh (around ten). Just started Heavensward.

  9. This jerk just shows up and tells Moenbryda that "you should smile more". Moenbryda gave her answer; "You will die" and in the end succeeded. Without a doubt, Moenbryda is a true badass and was too short for this game.
