In the most recent Questions and Answers Segment with Yoshi-P (Naoki Yoshida, director and Producer of Final Fantasy XIV) some people raised concerns regarding the lack of healers in the game. Yoshi P said that they have increased healer responsibility in recent Savage Raids and that is the reason; but he also said he can’t make healing easier or other people will start complaining. In this video Xeno gives his opinion on the state of Healers in FFXIV right now and compares it with previous expansions.

nowsday, healers just like to charge forwards and pull all the mobs. instead of healing instead of letting the tanks doing their jobs.
Simply put: bring back cleric stance dancing.
My only problem with healing right now is that if i'm not doing high end content i'm only casting 2 or 3 spells on repeat and ocasionaly letting out a heal. Its so boring.
DPS in my parties: “Can you do mana drain for more dmg?”
Also DPS in my party. Gets clipped by mechs, zero mit used and accidentally backflips off the arena to their deaths.
Me: “I can’t mana drain because I just lustrated your ass twice and indom-ed the raid wide.”
Also me: “I wonder which resulted in more dps loss—me not hitting mana drain as much as possible, or you dying 6 times?”
I think difficulty is a problem or rather the fights are designed as a difficult long list of rather bland mechanics. People get tired or (naturally) cannot execute on what is needed to very well and the healer role picks up thr slack.
Healing is also super bland in Ff14. Like really funking bland. I play Scholar because big shields is the only fun thing about healing, but so many healer heals are so boring, lack imagination.
Focus on dps for healers is so stupid when you only dot and then spam 1 button (adding in an energy drain for Scholar sometimes, and Square funking hates that Scholars have that).
Ff14s foolish path of difficulty is leading to bland design across the board.
I think healing in FF is pretty poorly designed. I'm not sure if healing itself is so secondary because of console players who probably can't react as fast with a gamepad or because SE thinks this is a fun approach. In WoW you heal most of the time and then you learn how to maximize your damage with the few free GCDs that you'll have. And then you learn to heal more efficiently so you have more and more GCDs for dmg. Meanwhile in FF it's considered bad to cast a heal. Like when you can't heal with only instants and oGCDs, you're doing something wrong. That's so weird to me. As a healer I mainly want to heal, buff and provide utility and then I want to excell by adding more and more damage.
And the worst part is that FF healers don't even have a lot of dmg spells. You mostly just spam 1 button. In WoW, even though healers are primarily healers, they have a more interesting dps toolkit, so when you have an opportunity to bust, you really bust. In FF your bust is pressing the same 1 button as always. They really need to think about what they want the healer fantasy to be and then build around that. If they want healers to be green dps, then they need more dps abilities.
I generally prefer FF's gameplay these days to WoW, but Blizzard did a much better job with healers and I think also tanks than SE. Sometime during LK or Cata, Blizzard really thought about how to make those roles more fun to play and I think they really succeeded in that regard (while ruining most of the other aspects of the game lul).
Another thing to keep in mind is that healing is the role that is most dependent on the team. DPS are in full control of their dps output, tanks are in full control of their damage intake and dps output while healers are uniquely dependent on the team for the healing output needed and thus dps output. If your cohealer is not doing his/her part in terms of healing/shielding and dps/tanks are not mitigating properly your in for a world of hurt. As a healer main I really like what theyve done this tier raid wides hit hard and tank damage is higher which is fantastic it was a step in the right direction healingwise. With that said if your party is not helping you out its rough it can be a night and day experience if you heal in a group that knows how to mit and make your life easier so you can do more dps and be more efficient with your kit compared to parties where people dont know what mits are and your cohealer just wants to dps. The icing on the cake is when you as the healer gets the blame for people dying when you did everything you could while the others are not miting or avoiding avoidable dmg. This puts a lof of pressure and strain on healers when the solution is out of your control which makes the role very ungrateful to play in certain scenarios. In a static its fun but in pf its unpredictable. That is why I dont want to heal in pf but with my static i love every minute of it.
The other issue is that incoming damage is spiky which further excasserbates the problem of reliance on your party. Either make incoming damage less spiky and more frequent or give healers more control over party wide mits.
They doubled down on "healers have to heal", raised the skill ceiling for healing and kept the consequences the same if a healer fucks up, the party's dead. No inbetween. It's binary.
I wish there was a way to have skill expression for healers where a fuck-up doesn't cost the entire party their lives. Something that was in Heavensward and Stormblood but was removed in Shadowbringers. I can't put my finger on it, as my finger is too busy mashing our single damage button 🤔
At this point, SE should just turn healers into support classes with all the buffs and some healing.
And then put sustain on tank & dps kits along with personal mitigation like barriers and removing their party wide utility, scrapping the need for healers completely and replacing it with a more active & impactful support role.
Healing in FFXIV feels like having Gordon Ramsay do mopping in kitchen instead of cooking. Big waste of potential.
Ideal state for me would be instead of 99% of time casting Fall Malefic, make me cast 99% of time Helios.
Rather than increasing the difficulty he should widen what healers have to do. have DoTs to Esuna from time to time, have secondary sources of damage hitting the team, etc. It's not about being hit harder, it's really about using more healing buttons more of the time.
This is why a "dps meta" in an mmo with healer/tank/dps setup is a dumb idea. Don't get me wrong, I understand why it existed, but as we can see, the moment healers are asked to actually heal (shocking concept), the crying starts.
I’m a healer main I always choose healer over dps I think if they want all classes to dps then remove healer classes and also us healers need to heal a lot more and if people complain they didn’t get healed then stay in healing radias
Plenty of healers in casual content. Healers just don’t want to play with sweats.
dude I'm a healer that wants to get through the savages, but you cannot even get party finders that aren't requiring "duty complete". You see the occasional advertising for a static, but for a casual player prog I can't even finish ps5 to move on to the others….
I was kind of hoping that with the amount of publicity that this problem has gotten in the past month, the community would correct it themselves by putting on your big warrior of light pants and playing healer. I mean, that's literally the only solution without nerfing the game into braindead mode.
I think people should just play AST more if they want a more difficult healer to play. As someone that mains healer, I haven't stepped into Party Finder much this tier because I would rather do savage content with a dedicated group since I don't have time to waste in PF with ppl that lie about their prog points in a fight or are just inconsistent at doing mechanics. Got more progress done in P8S with my group than with random PFs
Healers in FFXIV are designed to correct mistakes, and do damage when those mistakes are not happening. Mechanics that force healers to heal is only found in EX and above, and even then, they just map out their oGCD heals so they always have a means to resolve a mechanic. IOW, the more skilled the group in highend content, the more boring healing is. But this is only true for one subset of the communities healers.
In order for healing to truly be engaging, healers need to pursue content where players are known to screw up. The most fun I have as a healer is participating in practice parties for EX duties from the PF. The first couple of weeks of Sephirot Unreal were fun AF as a healer. This is the issue I see. Healers shouldn't have to do this to be engaged. The other option is to give them more DPS abilities to keep them busy during their downtime and in less punishing instances.
We have already experienced what happens when healers have more DPS options at their disposal. The dev team did not take these away to grief healers. Not sure if Xenos was around during Cleric Stance days, but that is all that needs to be said here. Yes, there were healers who were perfectly capable of juggling the two responsibilities. They are the exception trying to standardize their playstyle.
This latest tier has shown what happens when they increase the scripted healing requirements. They were reluctant to do this because they knew this is exactly what would happen. They simply cannot win when the healing community is a dichotomy with reverse ideals. However, this split is on the dev team because it's the encounter design that has caused it.
If you want healing to be rewarded then square should give all the healers a dps nuke like whm for example with sch you use all of your atherflow stacks you get a big boy energy drain that has high damage and gives back like 2k mp.
Change healers to support-dps and make every class off heal. Every class has a mini rotation of off healing whether it's AoE, HoT, single target healing, barriers, or mitigation. Implement life steal mechanics whether it's life steal for the entire party or just for yourself
Why did I quit raiding savage content as a healer main, let me see.. Because I wanted to be a healer? Not a 1 button damage spam getting railed on because I dared to stop dpsing to heal someone or rescue them or burn a big gcd heal because the tank didn't mitigate. They need to put more mechs for the healer to focus on with their healing kits instead of having to focus solely on dps 95% of the time, I play healer because that's what I want to focus on 100% of the time not being a stunted dps.
What if healer damage was realigned to be more oGCD focused? If the healer gcd had a lower potency and most healer damage came from oGCDs, having to use a gcd heal wouldn’t feel quite so bad, since the potency loss isn’t as high.
I was wondering why they don't experiment using a side grade to savage that can literally just be labeled "Experiment"; the purpose of which a designated healer doesn't exist, which each role and job would have similar abilities and mechanics to Pvp , where everyone gets a Guard , and everyone gets a self heal on 4 charges with a short cd alongside their other defenses, third eye or what have you. You could have busters function like a stack you need to use guard for with x amount of people or whatever.
The concept of a designated healer or tank is restrictive to their own design. Just look at how much they struggle to innovate new tanks , tank abilities or healers and methods of dealing damage. Not to mention the difficulty in balancing jobs which are already identical in all but effectiveness and a few buttons.
They have nothing to lose from using assets and variables already existing in game to see how the community responds to it
I’m aware of the healer situation the game is in right now but at least on my data centre, I feel like it’s always a tank (in PF when I use it at least) people are waiting on.
I would love healing if every gcd heal I press didn’t make me feel like a fucking trash player for losing dps
TLDR people will complain no matter what
half of the Sch are now playing Smn xD..
(too few Sch, too many Smn around lately..)
Seems like there's shortages because healers don't want to deal with the bs that groups put them through. The community needs to do better honestly, and healers don't get the appreciation they should get half the time. Some(not all) Pf groups also make ridiculous requirements, and they lack healers usually. As a healer main I just dislike joining groups that causes me to sweat unnecessarily and if your cohealer as well as the other roles arent contributing as they should then that's also a turn away.
The allure of healing is kinda fading. Can't even save the DPS sometimes when they die to a mechanic because those usually kill them in one hit. So moments of feeling proud that your healing saved someone is few and far between.
I think they're missing a large subset of healer main players that just don't want to DPS when playing healer. I have some healer main friends that refuse to play healer in XIV because they're just "A DPS that heals sometimes".
when u have people that play tanks that think pulling and entire dungeon in 1 pull and insta dieing because lack of gear/skill what do you expect really? its not fun trying to heal a grp where a tank cant hold agro and/or dosnt understand their own limitations on the class/role. reroll DPS and jsut kill shit and not deal with the drama,. not to mention certain mechanics that u cant even stand for a sec with out getting hit by god knows what that blinds you from the brightness then turning those settins off and have bad things on the ground u now can see because you tried to save your eyes, yah the game has alot of problems, good game but alot of problems. and no i didnt watch your video, i got anough from the tittle. every game companies response is the same just spin some BS to prolong the money comming in
It’s actually really simple. Just give healers more DPS abilities. Some oGCDs like Assize that damage and heal. Healing GCDs that charge another ability like Afflatus Misery. Tie the heals and damage together. In the end we’re all DPS. We need to embrace that fact
All those new terrible Sage mains realized they can't double stack and had to learn a pure healer so they rather dps than level another healer
