FFXIV settings explained in under a minute.
Tab Targeting.
It does not function like the game describes.
Tab or Shift+Tab will always select the nearest target first. However, the next press of Tab or Shift+Tab WILL NOT cycle nearest to farthest or farthest to nearest.
Tab moves the Target Marker to the next target on the right.
Shift+Tab moves the Target Marker to the next target on the left.

Thank you goes to AkhMorning, Squintina Nightgard’s controler targeting guide and Lycona DaCheeChee’s targeting guides. Without their findings I would not have looked further into how Tab and Shift+Tab cycles from target to target.

Oooh. So that’s what the person always standing in the middle of the targets was doing. I didn’t realize they make videos. Well I now know I can hold shift and tab which I didn’t know before.
I would love a series where you explain the other obtuse settings in the game. PLEASE?
It may be worth mentioning that Tab Targeting in FFXIV has two modes with Type 1 being the default setting.
Type 1 (Screenspace L<->R) which functions as above and Type 2 which functions as people are more akin to expecting. (Depth-based Near<->Far)
Type 1 is a carry over from FF11 and Legacy, while Type 2 is what most people are familiar with in other MMOs. (Honestly Type 2 should really be the default)
Great video on Type 1 tab targeting, but kind of only half the story on tab targeting in general.
