  1. Have loved revisiting this series with your voice work. Hildibrand doesn't always hit but I feel like the HW quests were especially tightly put together. There's a good emotional core here that makes it more than the sum of its parts.

  2. wow, i wasn't expecting proper character development on a Hildibrand quest. I guess FF14-2 is still the best in the FF14 series, & yeah the credits in Eorzean is a fun touch… so what will be of our mysterious Lala friend from back in Foretemps Gazebo 🤔

also, yes Dan, Gazebo is where the heart is

  3. Playfriends, it's time for Gigi to reach his full potential. This is your spoiler free lore comment!

Today's quests are from Patch 3.5, which saw Dan head to Baelsar's Wall (Episode 44 of Durmin's Heavensward Adventure)

0:00 – I… How? I have no idea how Jocat is doing that. Is he just rotating really smoothly with directional controls? Is that an emote I don't know about? [Edit note: you go into an emote that sets you into a pose, go to first person, and turn your camera]

1:25 – Fun fact, there are some time magic spells that are in use at this point in the game. The Astrologian job quests has an NPC that is a master of Sharlyan Astrology, and has a spell that freezes their enemies in time, for a short duration though. So time magic is not entirely lost.

3:30 – Ah, the moment when a character is forced to confront their past, juxtaposing their character growth. I would disagree with Cyr, though. I think someone who seeks truth and wants to help, is exactly what the Inquisition needs. It's what the Inquisition should be.

6:05 – You spend enough time with Goblins, you start talking like them. I've seen it happen in my FC with my own eyes.

6:45 – Cyr has a good point here. The Grand Sers' glory days were during the 1000 year war. Old habits will die hard, especially when the holders are trying to relive their youths.

12:54 – Few can say they've truly slept like the dead…

14:30 – "You snooze, you lose, suckers!" – Durmin Durami, probably

    14:40 – "Aw, C'MON!" – Hraesvelgr, probably

17:45 – Dan and JoCat are not kidding, the Moogles are so lazy. But Dan and JoCat are also right, that questline reveals that Moogles were among those who built the structures of Zenith, and if you are successful in grinding the way through the crafting quests, they will take up that mantle once again.

18:30 – And we're back to oiling Hidibrand up. We're never getting away from this.

23:45 – This sequence shows that the dev team is good a blocking their choreography and how the artists have manipulated the standard player faces to produce their "old" models.

24:55 – You wasted your youth fighting this war! You have a second chance at life and you want to do it all over again!? To cast thousands of lives into the flames for your egos!? To make good comedy, sometimes you have to have some real self centered baddies.

26:40 – I love the reused Thordan fight animation here.

31:45 – This does redeem FFXIV's version of Quan. Instead of abandoning Vivi, he tried to lift Vivi's burdens.

34:25 – And so passes Vivi Manderville. He set right what was wrong, and perhaps fulfilled his grandfather's dream. Except… not quite.

45:43 – I think Cyr is grossly overstating things. Ishgard is changing, and I doubt he'd be thrown from the Witchdrop for what he's done. The Grand Sers, on the other hand, need to be tried for attempting to re-ignite a WAR.

Next Time! I don't know what Durmin's up to, probably either patch 4.1 or one of the raids.

  4. 50:55 reads:

    The Watcher

    Autgar Hammil
(in bloody script underneath) Gentle Dead Man

and the next credit at 51:00 is:

    Coblyns…and more Coblyns

Presumably Autgar is the zombie from the initial quests. I don't know who The Watcher is. (There is a character in Endwalker called The Watcher but I very much doubt that this is that guy.)

Angelica is another name listed among the credits, I presume that's the name of Orland's late wife.

  5. As a long time WoW player with very little experience with FF14. I love the Hildibrand stories you have covered and I can't wait for more. I did not even know about them and the amount of effort that put in them brings me so much joy

  6. 18:35 note, there is a possibility for bonus dialog, if you did the side quest wherein you massaged salamander oil into Godbert for a piece of clothing

the default text that we got here was:
"My dear wife, I know you mean well, but let Forename handle it. Theirs is a bond which transcends time and space and personal boundaries."

but if you did the earlier glam quest, he says
"My dear wife, I know you mean well, but let Forename handle it. I can personally testify to the healing talents of his strong-yet-tender fingers."

which is a very silly and awkward thing for him to say in front of everyone!

  7. 6:33 It's a short trip, you see. One, Julyan, that you made considerably shorter with that skillet of yours.
7:47 That's a very odd way to talk about your son.
13:25 Rubbish?! For once he's wearing a suit capable of withstanding what he gets into! Maybe you'd like to take up forging and make something more durable than the posh outfits he goes through at an alarming rate?
16:49 Y'know, thinking about it more, HIldibrand could look really swish in proper armor. Like, really swish.
    19:11 Jeez, tonal whiplash much?
21:00 I feel like, tonally, maybe a spouse should be doing this? I mean, the WoL may be available, but still… if this were a normal RPG and I was playing a female character, this'd gross me out a bunch.
21:56 Yea, assuming I made it this far playing by myself, this right here is where I'd bounce off this questline. This isn't a professional masseuse, this is gross.
27:05 How much you wanna bet that people'd be mad if they gave a female character this treatment?
32:30 That's freedom. Do what? What you choose to do, for good, ill, and everything in between.
32:38 As much as I have, and will continue to criticize these quests, this is a good message sequence.
    39:18 But an honest one!

I will not stop finding it weird that, in the ARR quest, Dan & JoCat rightly criticized the in-universe reaction to Hildibrand in a wedding dress (though, imo, it would've been better had he his own dress, but I digress), but I don't recall them ever criticizing the literal mental and physical abuse or any of the other awkward stuff. All the talk during FF16 has me just laying into FF14 now, I guess. Did I miss or forget those criticisms for Hildy's quests?

  8. This is why I love Heavensward's Hildibrand quests so much; sure, it's very funny, not overlong, and I found Hildibrand's – of all characters! – fatherhood moments genuinely touching, but it's also still building on the themes of Heavensward and its post patches and… somehow doing them decent justice! Heavensward makes Heavensward Hildi stronger, but I'd even go so far as to say Heavensward Hildi makes Heavensward stronger.
Which might be a bit much, but I just love having a little more time seeing how the Church and others set in their ways are dealing with the peace and revolution we've brought to Ishgard. If you want another, more grounded take on that with another Inspector we've already met, I highly recommend the Scholasticate quests!

  9. I love that Cyr has fully come around to being a hero, and not just a trigger happy inquisitor. The Heavansward stretch really decided it wanted to be about something as opposed to just a farce, as much as it is a farce in it's own right. Themes of overbearing parents, what it means to be a person, not just your job. It's honestly something missing from the rest of the Hildibrand quests, as fun as they are.

  10. Are we just going to ignore the fact that Godbert has a salve on his person with so much mojo that it can apparently outright turn a blade?

No, no, you're right. Stupid question, really.

  11. Ok, had to stop and translate the "bloody" text in the credits. Nothing ominous, it's just referring to our favorite zombified Gentle Deadman, A?tgar Hammil. …I failed to translate that second letter.

  12. It is nice the scribble on the wall remains in Idyllshire after this quest, but it's a shame that Cyr isn't there too. It would have been a nice touch to have that room filled with his stuff and him to talk to occasionally.
