One thing i will say about 1.0 is that, while this version of the game was so damn bad and janky and unresponsive and literally built on java (im not kidding), it had so much motion captured animations, scenes, and cinematics, and had so much better voice acting than in A Realm Reborn.
You as a new player dont know this but when FFXIV relaunched as A Realm Reborn it had an absolutely monumental technical debt.
Whats a technical debt? its when the development of a game has to be so scaled down, so simplified, so stepped back, to be able to deliver a complete but compact package in a reasonable amount of time with no problems. This is why they had to do A Realm Reborn, why they had to destroy the original servers and game in its entirety, 1.0 was a horrific game development nightmare, with so much spaghetti coding, so much javascripting that actuallly made your menus and skills take a small eternity to respond, with servers that were so crippled that they could barely keep up with games small playerbase, and with so many inconsistencies with the games animation budget that you have flower pots with as many polygons as an entire character model or leviathan lagging players so much because every single scale of the serpent was being rendered, animated, and simulated in real time, and how the original Crystal Tools Engine was so bad and had so much bloatware that it stifled development; that the game ran out of expansion budget before it even had a chance to release one.
So Naoki Yoshida did the only logical thing possible… burned that steaming pile of shite to the ground.
Development for FFXIV ARR and later expansions would then be switched over to a downscaled version of the Luminous Engine (the selfsame engine that brought us Final Fantasy 15 and Final Fantasy 16), laying down a much stronger foundation for Final Fantasy 14's future development. But because A Realm Reborn had to be released within 18 months of development they had to rush hard, Yoshi-P developed a modified version of the SCRUM method to get everyone coordinating like a well oiled machine, but 18 months is not a lot of time, so they had to scale down the development substantially to fit the timetable. This meant no motion capture, no high quality voice acting, just passable story, etc. (But that didnt stop Nobuo Uematsu and his then apprentice Masayoshi Soken from making banger music), and this became a running theme across Heavensward and Stormblood, only starting to pay off their technical debt come Shadowbringers with some amazing voice acting and storytelling. And now with Endwalker we're starting to see even more with mocap once again and a lot more budget for smaller details like food being eaten. Finally theyre returning back to form, and it only took us 14 years of our lives 😂
Heh, if you havent already, check out final fantasy xiv 1.0 in a nutshell as byte sized version of the documentary.
You mentioned the camera work, and they've specifically talked about doing more cinematic things with the in-game scenes again starting in Dawntrail.
It gets even more confusion: apparently, this whole intro a many, many quests following this are… an Echo vision! We arent really there. Back in 1.0, the Echo work differently and it made you not only relive another persons memories but also taking part in them – as IF you were there. Its quite confusing if you ask me … but yeah, thats kind of the long and short of it…
Also, in 1.0 grafics in cinatics were everything. They were very expensive and specially made with real actors wearing these suits (if I remember correctly…). One of the first things ARR changed was how cinematics were made: now they only used ingame assets and models, which made them way more affordable, making ressources free for other things. Also, SE was broke at the time so they couldnt affort fancy cinematics…
Dont take these "how old is character x?"-websides seriously. Ask the devs and they purposefully skip around that questions. We only have estimates, like the twins being in their teens. Saying "Thancred is 32" has zero confirmation.
I remember falling from the sky on pc
