I played Final Fantasy 14 for the first time a couple weeks ago and my first impressions areโ€ฆITโ€™S AMAZING! I canโ€™t believe I waited this long to play FFXIV after 14+ years of being a WoW player. Every game has its quirks, but this one has far more pros than cons from what Iโ€™ve noticed so far. I can say I will be playing this game more consistently.

  1. First off Welcome to Eorzea hope you enjoy your stay no matter how long that may be! To begin, yeah the ARR stuff compared to the WoW leveling is SO much better however I would say for us at end game who have been through all the expansions and had to rate each one, ARR would more often as not be considered the worse of the expansion, but that's not to say that ARR itself is bad. For what they did in two years after shutting down 1.0 servers it's incredible. It's the following expansion that is amazing Heavensward and they keep building on that success. Stormblood (personally) while it was a great expansion in it's own right and definitely felt better than ARR, didn't feel as impactful until the very end with it's patches. As for the current expansion Shadowbringers, well let's just say there's a reason why it's earned the nickname Feelsbringer. The community more or less considers it as good if not BETTER than Heavensward expansion which is incredible. As for the cons you pointed out. the first one, totally agree something needs to be done to fix that. As for the second con, Yoshi P has actually put out a letter expressing his joy that he finds people wanting to come play the game and sorry to everyone new or returning that they have to wait up to 40 whole minutes to log in. They have both a short term and long term solution to this problem coming but obviously the plague has crippled what they can and can't do in a timely matter. Even after upgrading the NA servers to allow roughly 750 more people on each datacenter, servers were at capacity for 6-7 hours. That afk timer is generally put in place at the start of a new expansion yet here we are 4 whole months before release seeing influx of players normally seen at the beginning of an expansion. Third is PVP and yeah it really didn't have much to it. There's BG that you could que up for but in Endwalker the next expansion they are working on that as well. Not too much information other than they are working on a smaller scale of PVP might be something like duels in WoW but I'm not certain as far as I know. So hopefully that helps diminish some of the cons you might have. I'll link the page to his letter addressing us on the problem of the growing population and plans to alleviate the world congestion. https://na.finalfantasyxiv.com/lodestone/topics/detail/c2d7b35d55577879086b64cfde0acb6c23ccd07f

  2. Another thing. You only need 1 character to try all the classes.

Also while pvp may not be the major focus. It does have a dedicated playerbase and discord. The XIV team also has implemented a season for their main pvp called the Feast that gives unique rewards. While not being a pvp player myself, having pvp not be such a huge focus and more of side content sparring relieves a lot of that toxicity that tends to follow pvp. New players don't have to worry about being pkd in open world. Though dueling square could be expanded a bit to designated zones in the player housing areas.

  3. I just started 5 days ago and I am enjoying a realm reborn quite a bit. I can only imagine how much ill like the expansions if I'm already sold with the part of the game a lot of people say is the worst part.

  4. nice vid!.. post reborn expansion is where the story starts to finally fully pick up!!
you get used to the aoe clipping …
… we should warn players, it's safer to purchase on SE, so you can get early access for new expansions

  5. PvP makes sense of not having open world dueling or just general pvp cause the game has no "faction" like wow does as pvp is more or less war games/ training so I think pvp is serviceable.

  6. Actually man, I hate to say it, but PvP is NOT a big part of the FFXIV community. It just isn't. I think it's been a year since I did PvP because I just don't care. I did a lot of PvP in SWTOR and GW2, but I eventually tired of it because balancing issues and whiners on forums always creating a constant revolving door of FOTM. In FFXIV, the PvP is completely detached from PvE content and I prefer it that way. Sure, there's a small and dedicated PvP community, but they're like 5% of the userbase.

They are going to revamp PvP in Endwalker, so we'll see if it'll be a big improvement or not. It probably will be since they'll have a smaller-scale mode, but the truth is that no one really knows any real details, yet.

  7. I love how people keep commenting on the short text boxes. I never really thought about it because old school FF games were always in small text boxes. I understand what people are saying, just never thought about it until now. Glad you're enjoying your time. Good luck on the rest of your journey.

  8. So the only serious Con to PvP is that the main hub for it is located in an island? (to which you can teleport instantly by the way) Did you try it though?

  9. Buying of the game is just included into the game experience, it's the first trial that players need to go through. It's to test them for their strength of character and conviction!
