FF14 New Player after 15 years of WoW – Palace of the Dead, Gpose and Gladiator Tanking – Day 7

FF14 First Impressions:
I’ve played WoW for over 15 years but given the state of WoW right now and the lack of content, I’m trying FFXIV for the first time and documenting my journey throughout the game.

Throughout I will be comparing FFXIV to WoW and referencing the differences between the two. Obviously, I do have some bias, but I will try and keep an open mind all the way. As always these are just my thoughts and opinions.

Also if you have any tips for new players in FFXIV please let me as I’m probably making a lot of mistakes.

  1. On traps in PotD: you can't see them 🙂 you need to use pomanders to either disable them all on the level (pomander of safety I believe) or reveal them (pomander of sight). Here's the list: https://ffxiv.consolegameswiki.com/wiki/Palace_of_the_Dead#Pomanders
Also in PotD you will occasionally find hidden chests 🙂 you need to stand on them to reveal them, and again, you can't see them unless you have a pomander of intuition active. But sometimes you are just minding your own business there and bam Treasure Found announcement xD you just happened to be standing right over a hidden chest. Feels good every time.

  2. So possibly the best thing about this game I see. Is that you can play all the classes on one character. So all the other progression isn’t lost. You can spend a day leveling up another class while still making progress on your main with other things. Like farming and professions. I would say that’s the one down side of wow. You spend time lvling another class your main sits idle

  4. Great video as always! Never feel pressured to release videos, I think most would agree with me when I say that I'd rather watch fewer videos of you truly enjoying the game than many videos that cause you to burn out from the game or editing.

  5. I enjoyed the thousand maws of toto-rak dungoen, I started playing ff14 2 months ago( my first true experience of playing an mmo). The previous three dungoens where fun but by the time I finished the cutscenes the party was already ahead and I'd get warpped, with the toto-rak dungoen I ended up in an entire sprout party and the experience for me felt like I was truly exploring a dungoen with group that also had no idea what we were doing, It was a blast event tho the dungoen felt long.
    Loved it.

  7. For PotD, you can get a Pomander of Safety that will remove the traps but going in solo is HARD. I'd recommend queueing for the matched party to get paired with 3 other random people. It's much easier that way.

  8. 1:37, ah yes, The Thousand Maws of Toto-Rak.
I hated that dungeon the first time I was there, I was so dizzy and confused from the dungeon layout. It was only after 15, 20 runs I gotten used to it because it became muscle memory. Still dislike the dungeon entirely though.

It was truly a hellish dungeon in its own way.

So for Palace of the Dead in particular, the traps are actually invisible in this mode, there are pomanders (items) from gold chests that can drop a "Pomander of Safety" or "Pomander of Sight". Safety removes all traps on the floor, and Sight shows the current floor layout, including the traps on the floor (which show up as a red [X] when you're running around).
Silver chests increase Aetherpool level (Sometimes it'll give a green glow for armor, other times they will give a red glow for weapon level. Then again, it could just be a trap and it explodes).

  9. In palace of the dead the bees cast final sting after 3 auto attacks, if you use your shield bash on them mid cast you'll likely kill them in time. if you run like hell you can also technically outrange it and then they have to do 3 more autos before casting. This becomes important when soloing the 100+

  10. Ah yes, The Thousand Yalms of Total Crap!

Fun fact about Toto-Rak though — its actually one of 4 dungeons left over from the 1.0 version of the game. Three of them you have yet to get to (they're available later in ARR as optional dungeons), but that's part of the reason for Toto-Rak's weird design being the way it is. It has been redesigned quite a bit to be more linear than it was before, but it's basically the same dungeon.

  11. Thousand Maws of Toto-Rak is actually one of the few dungeons that came over from 1.X with very little changes, probably why it has the worst layout for the early dungeons.

  12. Im glad you are having fun in another game seems to be the trend for WoW veterans nowadays to migrate to FF14, It looks good im not gonna lie I have tried the free trial like a year ago it was fun at start but it requires alot of time investment especially to get to the fun part of the game and im not ready to give up on WoW yet maybe if 9.1 is a flop or too short on content I'll give ff14 a second try I'm a tank player myself, keep up the good work!

  13. palace of the dead is by far the best way to level low level characters, once your good at it and know what your doing its good exp, and pretty fun. Theres another version of this in later expansions, but i wont spoil anything. We refer to them as deep dungeons, so if u hear that term youll know

  15. I try FFXIV and the feeling that i have it's that i played in FFXIV almost the same things that i can play in wow but for any reason i didn't play anymore, but they are there to play almost in the same way, more rpg , more focus on story, questline and achievements instead of Mythic + or endgame dailies or world quests. Like you what i really don't feel engage in FFXIV was the anime characters, but i will try again the game…

  16. Hey, I'm not sure if someone told you this or if this is a thing that is recommended, but I've seen this in another streamer's video and personally think it's a nice thing to do when you are not with a group who agreed: In the Character Settings -> Display Name Settings you can adjust how the names of other people in the game are shown. You have the choice to use the full name (that's the default), but also abbreviate surname, forename or both. It's also separated into different categories (friends, party members, alliance members,…) so it's not an "all or nothing" decision.
I know, barely anyone in there plays with their real name, but if someone has a shitty day and might not do so good in a dungeon, they might not want to have that recorded on a stream either way, for the world to see it. (Or to become accidentally famous for better or worse.)
As said, I don't know if this is a common thing, I am not a streamer and barely watch FF14 streams because I haven't finished the game and are very careful with spoilers. But I've seen you also blurred out the chat and stuff, so I thought you might care to know about a feature like this. ^^
