What was healing like in 1.0 FFXIV? Were there any barrier healers? How did people mitigate damage in 1.0? With the final fantasy endwalker expansion showcase the developers mentioned the terms of “pure healer” and “barrier healer”– and how these terms are coming right back to the forefront of the approach that the developers are taking towards the healers in final fantasy 14.
These however are far from new terms to final fantasy 14, having been the primary focus of final fantasy 14 healing back in a realm reborn. Ever since heavensward launched the lines between what a pure healer is and a barrier healer has been much more muddled, especially with the introduction of the astrologian that could go between the barrier archetype or pure healer archetype using diurnal or nocturnal sect to modify how core abilities work.
I decided that this would be a fun series to do to really explore and flesh out the idea and meaning of what is a pure healer or a barrier healer.
The purpose of this first video is to try and explore what we’ve seen in the past, specifically in 1.0 days with pure healers and barrier healers and try and see what kind of implications that might have for healers and compositions going forward into the 6.0 endwalker expansion.

I appreciate this video
You should do this for every role and job. From where they started to where they sit now.
is it even worth it to play noc-astro anymore? it's going to be removed and changed. *sigh*. my favorite class.
stopped playing for the moment bc of this..
hope sage is worth it
what should I play now? I'm not very motivated atm😅😅😅
an ability that could be considered a precursor to adloqium is bubble from FF12
Interesting, I didn’t play back then so I didn’t know this. Thanks for the video.
I can't place a barrier bc im a WHM main….. so ima just sub for now
I almost never used Noct Sect bc like EVERYTHING lv70 on just evaporates shields so it felt pointless BUT shielding under Neutral Sect was pretty strong. Very sad Ast is losing this versatility, cant imagine how they'll make up for this or what the hell NS will do now.
at the end of the day, as long as barrier healer's "barrier" actually isnt squishy enough to be like a glass
barrier healer will objectively better since it functions as "overheal" "pre-damage soak" which in an another word utility spells.
Where…pure heals……are one dimensional and simple which completely does not fit Astro at all. since this class utilize so much zero global cooldown abilities in between each cast….. not to mention its original concept of different buffs….
Really interesting to know this all
That was really interesting, thank you!
I've been playing a bit, so I can throw in a few things:
Stoneskin 2 was added to the game late in ARR and could only be used out of combat. It basically saved you having to cast a SS on each party member one by one before pulls, so it was a total QOL thing.
Shell was not in ARR as far as I recall. Protect was. CNJ/WHM got a trait called "Proshell". Protect did 10% (I think?) physical damage reduction. The Proshell trait added 10% magic damage reduction. The spell could be cast in or out of combat, and hit all party members at once. It could be selected by SCH as a cross-class ability from CNJ. BUT, the WHM version was better, because it reduced physical and magical, not JUST physical. Because of that and because the Devs just tuned all battles under the assumption that everyone would always have Protect (or Proshell) ended up with them removing it because, as you say, it was baked in assumed rather than an actual bonus…
Now, if you mean 1.X, that was before my time (I started in 2.2 or 2.3, I think….it's been a while!), and I would absolutely believe that as FFXIV was originally envisioned as a sort of spiritual successor to FF11. Note that FF11 really only had two healers, WHM and SCH, with some builds of things like RDM being functional healers (FF11's class/Job system being…FAR more flexible. I've only ever played a little in the form of a free trial once, but I have read about it a bit here and there). I would absolutely believe it had those extra effects on abilities.
Though…I seem to recall Miasma having the healing reduction and heavy effects when I started ARR. I feel like there was some other spell that did so too (Fluid Aura? Earth 2?), but it's been so long I don't recall.
But back to FF11, I think SCH was more or less invented FOR that game so they'd have a second healing option. As I've said a number of times on forums and comment sections with people, Final Fantasy leans so heavily on White Mage being the healing Job in all the single-player games there really aren't a lot of other options to draw from. I made a list before Shadowbringers pointing out that the only real options besides White Mage were Red Mage (which we got as a DPS in SB), Dancer/Bard (which have never been purely healing but often have heal and support abilities), Chemist (due to items), and then the advanced Job of White Mage which has often been called White Wizard (FF1), Devout (FF3 I think?), Seer, Shaman, or Sage (various). Some jobs like Monk or some iterations of Paladin/Holy Knight/Runic Knight tend to get a few heals, but it's more side than main healing.
Indeed, I called Sage – accidentally – 2-3 years ago arguing with someone on Reddit for why it made sense for Dancer to be a healer. My argument was, essentially, there are few healing Jobs in FF lore, and most of them like Seer/Sage are just upgraded/advanced White Mages, so I didn't see it making sense to have, basically, White Mage and White Wizard in FFXIV considering we already had the "advanced Job" by going from CNJ to WHM. So I thought at the time a normal FF Sage would be kind of redundant.
Granted, I had no idea AERODs as a weapon was going to come into FFXIV and Sage as a barrier healer using more magitech looking powers/technology is….let's just say it's not your average FF Sage! 😀
.
I love videos like this, please do more! Finding info on 1.0 is spotty at best for people that didn't play it (and even those who did), but I love history AND meta-history (that is, history in game and history OF the game on irl planet Earth). It's why I love stuff like the "Secrets of a Realm" and "Remnants of a Realm" series on YouTube (both of which, sadly, have not had new videos in ages). I've even thought about using those as a basis for guided tours of Eorzia. Though, of course, it would be limited to La Noscea, Thanalan, Gridania, and Coerthas Central Highands/Mor Dhona (since noting else existed in 1.X to compare against.)
Not to mention that damn haunting Dalamud music that played the last several months of the 1.X sequence as they prepared to literally destroy the world, in game and out, to make way for ARR.
Another great video! Keep it up!
I enjoy AST for it's versatility and strong support. I simply prefer Noct sect because I like a more proactive style of healing. So while I'm very much sad about Noct sect going away, I will likely still play the job because of its cards. If Sage can properly fill the role of a proactive buff shuttle, neat. If not… I'll be sad, but I'll just have to swap healers more often I suppose.
So I guess the question is, what healing abilities do you think should be removed from healers in order to give more DPS options? Since you believe healers have too many healing tools, which do you think are unnecessary or redundant?
