Whenever people (usually content creators) judge a game's success by how many people are watching it on Twitch, it never seems to make any sense. I'd imagine if you like something, you'd much rather be "doing the thing" vs. watching someone else do it. At most, it is kind of like you said – people will watch related highlights and whatnot related to whatever game/thing they're interested in WHILE they are simply fucking playing/doing it.
Also that's why ESO is really low in the twitch viewership, mostly everyone is playing it and not viewing it. Not uber numbers but it isn't a copium game with lack of content.
Wows a mess
'massive copium from wow players' you mean the half a dozen who didn't also leave to play ff?
Let's just face it. Asmon is just a salty man child that his cartoonish orc is being bitch slapped by "weeb shit" as he calls it.
What about the fact FFXIV players are also skeptical that FF is the biggest MMO?
I love the mental gymnastics to justify the low FF14 presence on Twitch. LOL!
XIV has been seen a huge influx of sprouts for a long time but probably on the last month or so, it's been retarded, login queues are getting bigger, roulettes waiting lines are becoming way bigger, etc.
Besides, the lack of twitch watchers can be toned down to the fact that most if not all XIV content creators are complete trash. There is also the fact that from an asmongold's poll, about half his watchers weren't even subscribed to the game anymore with many of them playing XIV so I can safely assume many of the WoW watchers aren't subscribed, they probably keep up to date with patches or whatever.
So, Is it copium from WoW players? Entirely, they are cattle and they've been treated as such by Blizzard, however just like cattle, they wouldn't survive very well in the wild so they still depend on it despite it's current state. People like Bellular shilling XIV is doing the job as well so I can only expect that the sprout influx will keep intensifying for a while
I've always been baffled at this take that "the more people who watch the game on twitch/youtube=more active player base"
I wonder if they thought that the reason why there are less people who watch the ffxiv streams is because they would actually rather play and experience the game…
You hit the nail on the board. Asmon made a mistake about this regarding social media engagement equals to popularity. Asmon doesn't understand JRPG. Watching FF14 on twitch is actually a detrimental thing for a lot of FF14 gamers because of spoilers. Many of the streamer themselves goes into this media blackout while playing FF14 because of this reason. Even meme shared on Twitter is a spoiler. For those that actually participate on these social media for FF14 are mostly veterans of FF14 who has been around for years. And population right now heavily weighs on new members than legacy/veterans.
A lot of stretches and anecdotal evidence in this video, but enjoyed your perspective. Lots of grindy, chore like content exists in 14 as well, such as doing your daily roulettes to get currency for equipment to do raid content, grinding for scrips for gathering and crafting jobs, beast tribe daily quests in order to get achievements and mounts and most recently triple triad cards if you want one of the most exclusive bragworthy cards in the game, blue mage groups grinding for skills for optimal group cheesing. Grinding hunts for currencies as well, there is plenty of hamster wheel content on 14, but us 14 players are very quick to critique Warcraft but hesitant to acknowledge our on faults if there are any Warcraft players watching. It's 2021 now and playing a game and watching a stream at the same time are very easy to do. But the fact of the matter is, is that the only fun 14 content to watch is savage and ultimate raid content, which gives very little for streamers to interact with their audiences, as generally they will be interacting with other static members. No one wants to watch other 14 content because it's all either very easy, or very monotonous and grindy. Watching someone grind out 15 runs of DR working on their relic, or doing the same trial over and over again trying to get a barding/mount or dang fish tank. So it would rely very heavily on the charisma of it's streamers, to which there just aren't as many charismatic 14 streamers as there are 14 streamers, not to mention 14's competitive scene pales in comparison, not enough really serious FC's with world renowned reputations duking it out for world/datacenter firsts on clears of savage and ultimate content being streamed, or any real serious competitive PvP tournaments. I think that is why no one enjoys watching 14 streams, not because people are choosing to play it over watching it, but rather the game isn't very entertaining or engaging as a spectacle.
I'm a moreso a WoW player than a FFXIV player. But I will be happy if FFXIV had more players than WoW, because what WoW really needs is some good damn competition. However, I doubt FFXIV is bigger than WoW. I just don't see it. But who knows?
It's fantastic putting an Asmon video on and listen to him suck in copium for 10 minutes over FF14.
See, the problem of saying Twitch viewer count equals activity is that FFxiv isn't popular compared to wow on twitch thus ffxiv should have far fewer people playing ffxiv right now. This doesn't make sense if you look at how active people are in the game right now.
You make really good content with good takes. Lol however, I always feel like you're gonna beat the shit out me, like I realize that's impossibe. .. you just give that I'ma go to the pub and smash some heads vibe.
It also doesn't help that since FFXIV is heavily story-based, going into spoiler territory just like that comes off in poor taste for most players. Who would've thought that, gasp, people actually cared about the plot enough to want to be surprised by it?
FFXIV players: "Makes sense"
WoW players:

Ha! I was listening to this video while playing FFXIV.
Blizzard try and trap people with 6 month subs where you get a mount which conveniently ends upon a new patch drops, and then repeat. FFXIV releases a patch every 3 months to which we are told we should take a break and play other games while the devs actively listen to the community. I dont blame Blizzard, I blame Activision.
