If you really hated someone couldn't you buy them a "gift" with a temp account (if you get on their friends list), get a chargeback with your card, and then they would get banned for "RMT"?
So if they claim to have some way to detect if a gift is suspicious, but we don't know how they work that out, how can we be sure that any legit gifting wont be flagged by mistake? Do people need to avoid the gifting feature entirely out of fear they might accidentally get themselves and their friend banned over an incorrectly flagged gift?
Pretty bummed about this, I did annual mounts during Christmas for our close and core fc members. I did fat cat one year, the golden cloud another etc…
It was a nice warm gift because we're all connected thanks to the game, we've been a tight group for years and it was just perfect. So not being able to do that now is a bummer. It was always nice getting everyone their code and individually surprising everyone, just fit the Christmas mood perfectly.
Hurts even more now because I was just getting in the mind frame of what mount to get peeps this year and how to surprise them
Making the credit card and account name match would fuck me over tbh. I already almost lost my account trying to get it back because my ID didn't match my name, because I was young when I made my account and was stupid enough to use my trans name instead of my dead name and I own up to that being my own problem. But also my mom pays for my sub. The game is 13+ not 18+, I imagine there's plenty of accounts where the payment info doesn't match the owner of the account. Even for adults, people pay other people's subs and stuff sometimes. I really don't think that's a good solution, and I personally would lose access to my 8 year old account if that happened.
As always asian companies making the most stupid trash decisions ever. Korean and japenese companies they really know how to complicate things, something that is supposed to be simple they know how to make it a nightmare.
This is stupid. So are they afraid of people using stolen creditcards to gift something to someone else for cheaper? Wanna know the best way to solve that? Lower the fucking prices of the shop items so the risk/reward assesment of going through sketchy websites to buy a simple cosmetic isn't worth it anymore. So yeah that means you'll have to make a $10 emote be $5 or $2.50. Perhaps you'll have to make it account wide as well so you don't have to buy them in bulk for alts.
As for like the omega emote going for $4000 and such… fastest way to make that disapear is to just put it on the shop for a more reasonable price. Or maybe it's time to expand the veteran rewards to a few more months.
I don't see the problem here. Square Enix will need to start raising subscription fees soon, or shutdown some services. Actions have consequences and businesses must protect themselves from inflation.
I believe the folks that handle the website and store and such are not directly under Yoshi-P but rather part of a larger shared resource used by all the teams at Square, which would explain Yoshi-P's statements in the past regarding the difficulty in changing things like the sign up process and account management system. Personally, I think Square should bite the bullet and set aside some of these profits into a fund to be spent on dramatically overhauling their whole account system and sign up process and online store to make it more seamless and fraud resistant.
In my FC we make competitions of various kinds, like in game challenges etc, and the winner / winners usually get to pick a cheaper item from the online store as a price of their choice, guess we're not doing that anymore…
I'm guessing there must be a very large theft problem to take such a drastic measure . I doubt they wanted to do this. I think people might be underestimating the amount of money involved.
Meanwhile trial players are still banned from PvP because of bots. A ban they said would be temporary. Starting to doubt trial players will ever be let back in if this is their response to botting.
Its honestly pathetic how out of touch this is. Not only out of touch with their own community, but with the MMO history in general. Take Runescape as the prime example. RMT was a HUGE problem for them, and VISA almost closed their doors on the game because of how much fraud was going on. What was Jagex's solution? Disabling the most popular way to do pvp. The population tanked, and the game was fundamentally shattered. Obviously this isn't as big, but it's just as pathetic how low effort the solution is.
If people are confused by the changes, there's this thing called RWT that is a massive problem, this was to counter it. If that confuses you even more, maybe you're apart of that RWT.
No one talks about the real issue here, a game you pay a monthly sub and every xpac and you're ok with a store in the first place. the store should be removed and everything should be obtainable in game. all games with these store deserve to be stolen from as they openly steal from their players with these stores in the first place. if you ok with stores in mmos you pay subs for and xpacs as well have no idea how much money they much from you just on thoses alone, they dont need the mog station. they already have more money then they will ever need.
Many people use fake addresses to register to the game coz they cant use their real address apparently their real place doesnt exist. so the matching the se acc. to the card information solution is not gonna happen.
This is likely an intermediary phase before making a larger change. Former employee of gaming platform and also a payment processor. Card theft purchases are massive and getting more sophisticated.
With the friend list tracking vs code tracking, a stolen account can buy many many codes at one time and sell them over time. With friends list, they would have to wait after adding the person and has a delay in selling any amount of items. It does suck for giveaways but for the person complaining about their "bestie" that person should have been on your friends list more than 3 days. The stolen accounts being taken advantage of are the ones with save credit card information and that makes it way easier. They aren't going to want to outright say we've experienced too many fraudulent purchases to the point that payment processors are threatening to lock down all of out money. If you can't get a payment processed, you can't buy, sell, or even pay employees and people.
Restricting what can be gifted is way better than the solution of redoing their billing system and potentially ruining someone's account or mess up with your bank. That kind of problem takes so long to fix and even if it was a small issue, banks are a huge hassle for anything to get done. Streamers and rp businesses really hate this change (including myself since it limits what I can gift my friends) but I think it's overreacting when we get mad at the game for making it harder for us to spend our real money when most games would love to take it even if it's at the expense of the player. For that reason, I applaud SE for accepting any profit loss because I doubt they wanted to go this far but it was probably the lesser evil. However, I do think it's possible for SE to remove the restriction on gifts. Like it was noted, SE was taking precaution over the fact the gifted player might already have the item. In that case, should the player try to claim the item in the mail, normally the system will automatically refuse it if the player already owns it. If the system doesn't kick in for certain duplicates, then as long as the player doesn't claim the item (player responsibility at that point) even though they read the mail (in general any mail you read but don't claim the items are still shown as unread), SE can "delete it" as they claim to be able to do and then reimburse the buyer with crysta currency. Anyone who has run into bank problems should know crysta from SE. You basically purchase it in the store with money (like a gift card) and it's safer to use when buying anything online aka no hassle from your bank and less of a headache for SE. That would still keep whatever configuration SE wants to do while also allowing the players full access to the online store again for gifts.
its honestly not a big deal yet the coom-unity are dramatic. you cant gift other players? oh well ppl act as if you cant donate to charity to combat aids or cancer or something like that. you can still buy items for yourself and you can still gift players, they just have to be on your friends list, or you can just send money to ppl thru cash transfer apps so they can buy an item themselves. "i dont want to send money to ppl i want to send random gifts to friends my self or to random ppl". if you are already feel scetchy about that then mayb eyou shouldnt be gifting ppl in the first place or try to make gifting anythign more than charitable. shouldnt dramatically affect you
This company sells remasters of 20 year old games at full price, and you honestly think they went "yeah let's just gut a huge part of one of our most successful products' income for no good reason in the laziest possible way."?
Just use your noggins for two whole seconds before you take to the forums and yell how bad and unfair this is. They know. But they have all of the data available, and they STILL decided this was the way that would harm their profits the least.
Of course it sucks, but there's obviously something else going on that they cannont or do not want to disclose.
This kneejerk reactions speaks to the fact that it's very likely that the stipulation and rules were dictated by the credit companies and not Square Enix.
Personally I think this is a very poor decision by SE and the 14 devs if they don't reverse it and make everything giftable again they will definitely lose money and that will definitely hurt them in the long run hope they seem how many people are pissed off and reverse it
SE falls into the same pit Blizzard did. so someone exploited something, and now everyone gets punished as a result. the SE payment "boss" was something I struggled with a year ago, it was very hard to subscribe to the game, they have to their credit made that easier now.
If you really hated someone couldn't you buy them a "gift" with a temp account (if you get on their friends list), get a chargeback with your card, and then they would get banned for "RMT"?
This really only affects streamers who get free stuff from their community. Most regular people won't care that much.
I wonder if this is to crack down on us NSFW gposers who do giveaways for twitter followers
It sucks, I was going to gift a mount to a friend but now I can't. Fortunately he ended up buying it himself already but still. . . 😢

I can only assume this is intended to be a temporary solution, because it's so dumb as a long term one

my husband and i would gift each other mounts or emotes for birthdays, holidays…this makes me sad

seems more like they don't want to deal with charge backs than actually fighting rmt.
I think money shops are bullshit anyways because I am poor
Hopefully this is a precursor for implementation of a WoW token-like item.
Wait, people have friends to send gifts to?
They probably got pressured by Mastercard or Visa.
Are mog station items not tradeable?
Keep complaining and hopefully they'll do something about it.
Euerka bots? Have you ever saw the terracotta army of lalafells under the limsa aetheryte?
Do we have a southern Zephla now?

Bah – I like to send random items to people. 😕

It's definitely a spaghetti code issue, but they need to get their act together and find some way to circumvent it because this is not okay.
Girl what do you do with your hair it is gorgeous please tell

"there's fishing bots on the moon" is one of the most uniquely FF14 lines imaginable

Well their fix to unclog a toilet is to turn the water off.
Personally I think this is a very poor decision by SE and the 14 devs if they don't reverse it and make everything giftable again they will definitely lose money and that will definitely hurt them in the long run hope they seem how many people are pissed off and reverse it
reminds me of how Runescape removed the wilderness in order to combat RWT
