They made a whole map about looking for a piece of jewlery…. half of another map was cooking a spicy food… i just feel like an experienced story writer could think of something more engaging.
Dawntrail story definitely did not feel short
"That doesn't mean that the quality should be lower or that it shouldn't be interesting for what it is." THANK YOU. I've heard so many people say that this quality was expected after the "reset" and I couldn't disagree more. You can have a low stakes story and still a satisfying execution. In my humble opinion, even ARR had more substantial writing than Dawntrail. Was it perfect? No, but still.
The Dark Knight bit at the end just kills me, pretty funny tho
I think Viper is great right now.
My problem is that he didn't address the main issue. Which is dialogue writing. Dialogue quality is considerably worse than Ishikawa's in ShB and EW. I hope they're aware of that issue and I'm glad at least he acknowledges the pacing and too much Wuk Lamat. (Though the main issue with her is dialogue writing & execution. Not her being unsure & how she develops as he seems to think) DT's story is great in concept, the execution is what the issue is. Yoshida seems to think it's because EW was a climax but it's not. It's that the execution of DT's great story concept wasn't good. Last zone hit the feels, but it could've hit even more if it was all executed properly. And that's coming from me, someone who actually liked DT quite a bit, because of last two zones!
Here's what bothers me with the scions.
If they were cut from the story altogether, that would be fun.
BUT. If they ARE going to be around, they should have more to do. Alph and Alisae felt so weird and lifeless for the majority of this story. Why were they even here? Ostensibly it was to learn lessons about Tural to implement back in Garlemald but that never really went anywhere. They had very little, if anything, interesting to say or do as individuals. They were just tagging along to fill out Trust slots as far as I could tell.
And the whole rivalry thing with some of the scions working for another cantidate was so undercooked. It amounted to….exactly one moment of Thancred briefly inconveniencing us in a dungeon. I didn't expect anyone to be out for blood bout outside of that one moment, and one decent campfire scene with Koana, they almost may as well have not even been there either, except as trust slots for dungeons.
Estinien was handled fine. He's just doing his own thing and briefly shows up, but the four mentioned above had a lot of screen time despite having so LITTLE to do. Even Krile doesn't really get much to do throughout most of the story too. She has a personal reason to want to find the city of gold but until you GET there it's just a couple of teases here and there.
If the scions had just been absent that would have been fine, but if they're going to be around they should have more going on than being our bland little helpers and filling trust slots.
I quit VPR over the changes they are absolutely terrible. It feels like a level 50 class at level 100…
I am very confused by his response. Is he saying people who are unhappy with the changes misunderstand them? Cause that is a very weird take.
your worst fear is coming scion wuk lamat for the next 9 years. she is gonna be our best friend forever and ever.
I'm so out of step with people on this ,,, I liked the story a lot, and it was nice to be a mentor to Wuk Lamat, the pace being reminiscent of ARR only made me happier than I already was about this expac!!
I like the scions ant the role they play in the pre-dawntrail MSQ but I am fine with leaving them out of the story but only if they replace them with someone else that can fill the role. They would have to be left out completely though. If you have them in the room but don't use them, that is when it feels wrong. The half measure of having them stand in the background and not get involved in a situation that is in their field of expertise doesn't work.
As far as his comment on it feeling like devs don't play their own game, that just made me think of Helldivers.
On the topic of FF on xbox, it's weird to me when people say "There's no audience for this" when there was quite literally no chance for that audience to grow. "No-one appears to be buying JRPGs on xbox…" because for the longest time, there were none. So obviously if you don't sow the soil, there will be no harvest to reap.
Is there anyone on the planet that has an Xbox Series (x/s) but not a ps5?
I love the 'idea' of the first half and all the tests that are about learning about the people of Tural. But they could have used some work to add more tension and stakes to some of them. They could have still had it focus on setting up the cultures etc while also having more interesting stuff going on too.
Take the first dungeon for example. It was fun, but narratively it didn't amount to anything. Our boat needs to be fixed. We go to look for a way around on land. Don't find one and circle back to continue riding the boat. The whole thing narratively didn't amount to much or have any meaningful conflict.
Mrhappy1227, i liked
People want the slowest, easiest, laziest way to play this game and their classes.
Pacing was by and far my biggest issue with DT, I think them leaving more of the mandatory stuff as a blue quest that you can do if you're interested in would help a lot.
I suspect the viper debuff changes were inevitable due to the new exploration zone. Every enemy has a maximum of 30? 40? debuffs that can be applied to it, so having another job with a permanent debuff to put on the boss would potentially take up debuff slots and make trick attack or chain strat fail to apply. This was apparent at the release of DT where people were leveling in bozja and you'd have 48 vipers in a fate all trying to apply their debuff.
They might not have been considering larger scale content during initial development as viper and reaper came out after bozja, and the debuff cap doesn't come into play too often in 8-24 player content.
For me the first half of the story was more enjoyable ¯_(ツ)_/¯
Still a Reaper Main. Still hate Death’s Design
I have lore for my character where she goes and trains at the Falcon Nest where it’s all cold and frigid, but that’s what I did when I was trying out the viper before I even took it into a dungeon or any thing I went and I literally trained with the class for like 30 minutes
I don't really get complaints about DT. There is zero build up.
Every expansion had a build up.
Dragonsong War, Doman/Ala Mihgo Liberation, The First, Final Days.
There was no build up here, so I had zero expectations. I just went in going "okay, hit some stuff I guess, see what new stuff appears". And that's what we got.
I think dialogue complaints are dumb, Wuk Lamat appeared a bit too much, but I'm also not transphobic so I didn't really care much, she got more play than I expected, I wish Krile got more ect but whatever
Like I'm not gonna sit here and pretend I didn't do a dumb cheese quest IN ARR, or a Moogle quest IN HW, or a stupid fish quest in StB.
Yoshi P didn't actually address any of the actual issues; The Bad Writing, The Bad Voice Acting, The Bad Voice DIRECTION, retreading themes we've already covered (Amaurot 2.0 etc), Characters seemingly forgetting ALL of the valuable information we learned over the past few expansions that we could have used to solve the problems we faced easier.
Nobody is asking for something as Grand as Endwalker or even close, but saying "New era, new story" doesn't mean everyone should have been lobotomized
I’d rather them release 1 job per expac and focus on older jobs and roles and the way they play. Also they need to make enshroud have no recast like reawaken zzzzz
It’s still a bit lame that FFXIV on Xbox requires a Gamepass sub to play as well, when PS4/5 don’t require Plus
So essentially they made Viper knowing that a large portion of the community likely wouldn't be up for a busier job, and instead of releasing it and letting it simmer for at least a raid tier, they immediately pulled the trigger with changes they'd already anticipated they'd have to make, regardless of what the rest of the player base felt.
Meaning Viper is more than likely going to stay as baby's first melee instead of the refreshing job that it was. At this point I honestly wish they hadn't even released it in its initial state at all. Way to show how much confidence you have in your playerbase, kudos
I personally like the first half of dawntrail compared to the second. Felt the second half was tacked on. Gave no crap about those people and what they were doing outside of slapping down lizard man.
My only problem with Viper is how easy & forgiving it is, vs how much damage you do. Its really obnoxious.
Its super simple, yet DUMPS out DPS… but it also has Thunderclap.. and probably the best disengagement tool in the game, that can hold 3 stacks off and regain them
Like oh okay. Thanks.
Really glad MNK has very limited range options but you have VPR T.Clap. Very cool you gave RPR an unrefreshable ranged skill, thats weaker than VPRs which they can refresh.
Just… a very stupidly designed job.
Remember some ppl are playing on console, which means they use controller, button overload and busyness of pressing, can lead to such feedback, especially if on console.
Dark knight sulknig in the corner while the other tanks are allowed to have fun
So many Zoraal Ja's in the comments
Fix DRK plz
After being realy disappointed with the so called "break" we where supposed to take in 6.0 to 6.5 I really liked the first part of the expac! I understand why Wuk lamath was not to every one taste … even for me she was a bit to much of a shonen protag. But I liked bieng in a mentor role for a quick minute. Felt like being old bruce wayn in batman beyond. That doesn't mean the expansion was perfect but I really amongst the good critic there are just people being overly harsh because dawntrail was not something even more batshit over the top then endwalker IMO the reset of stakes was much welcome…. or so i would say if the second part of the story didn't muddy that particular water… Still I feel it was a good enough explo and think it's reasonable not every expression can be the payoff of 10 years of story.
It's always weird to me seeing some of these MSQ criticisms because for some reason everyone had ShB and EW in mind and based everything off of that. Writer teams change, circumstances do too. There's also the very clear "new beginning" that people somehow always forget about… You can't possibly equate the climaxes of years and years of story, lore, character buildups with a new world and new characters.
Personally, I loved having to take a step back with the "usual suspects" (Scions and even the WoL themselves) and meeting new people. Now, if they stay around or become a new "Lyse, Aymeric, Vrtra" we'll see in the next patches/expansions, but it was still a very solid new beginning. Dawntrail really is "Stormblood v2" because with the mixed story reception we are promised some MEATY content coming up and the new battle design is already pretty great. I had the most fun progressing through dungeons, trials and raids in DT over any other expansion.
1:07 Yeah all of these interviews are basically the same and there's very little actual news here.
I really don't care if the scions are around full-time or not. What I want to see is them make a decision one way or another. If they want to keep them around, keep them around. If they think they're played out and want to move on then write them out and move on. What I hate is this flaccid writing where they can't make a decision on anything in the story without looking at the audience and saying "This is what you want, right? Right?". I'm losing patience. Either pick a story and tell it or I'm going to assume that they've decided that they've done everything they think they can with this game and move on to something else.
what about allied wards where you have "FC/friend Alliances" and oyu can build an instanced ward together with FCs and Personal homes and hten your locked into that ecosystem instead of the static one, freeing up the static ones
I feel the second part of the MSQ is definitely a lot shorter than the first, all the S9's and… What's the name in English… Heritage Found, passed like a blink of an eye to me^^
The job was out for a month, not a week. The changes were fine imo.
We don't have anything NEW, we don't have any competitive content, we ARE playing the SAME content for ten years, but the problem is a Female Lion
If we ever travel to the past, I want to see the Allagans with so much lore about them from previous expansions
I firmly believe that people wouldn't be lamenting the lack of screentime for some of the Scions so much if they'd been more satisfied with the new characters introduced, and if Krile had been given the time she deserved instead of making everything about Wuk Lamat.
All I want to know is …. new hairstyles for female Rothgar when?
DT was like "From Dusk till Dawn" – before you could really get invested in one side of the story there is a huge shift out of left field. Works for a movie, doesnt work for a game.
I wish these interviewers would stop asking story questions that Yoshi-P obviously can't answer. Are they hoping he'll say "Yes, you'll be travelling to the Eighth reflection in patch 8.2 and X character will die. Please look forward to it"?
Why not instead ask him about lifting job restrictions on glamour, or adding more functionality to housing, or bringing back Feast rewards, or Savage/Ultimate trophies, or fixing power creep in earlier MSQ trials, or dungeon design? It's a waste of potentially good questions.
i want the scions to be mostly gone so they can come back stronger later, their stories concluded in endwalker, SE holding onto them feels like sphene and the endless
If China can make FFXIV mobile, SE should have no problem making FFXIV on Nintendo. Make it happen YoshiP!
