Games like Final Fantasy XIV can be a serious time investment, but they’re also a financial one. Square Enix wants $10 bucks per month for a subscription, which is a bargain IF you get sucked into the story and the gameplay. You SHOULD try before you buy, and there is a surprisingly generous free trial that might just ensure you’re sufficiently addicted by the time it expires.

In a nutshell, you can play through the entire base game and the first expansion for free, all the way up to level 60 without any time restrictions. I’ll have a link in the description if you want to read up on the details.

I’m drawn to this game in a way that hasn’t happened with other MMOs, and it comes down to two things: The first is the fact that you can switch classes so easily. Want to play as a Rogue, an Archer, a Conjurer or a gladiator without switching characters? Just equip the relevant weapon. And all the game’s classes evolve into jobs, which opens even more gameplay opportunities and specialization. It needs to be underscored that you can level every single class and every single job with a single character.

The second thing is the story, and the fact that despite it being an MMO, it often FEELS like a single-player RPG I just happen to be playing online. When you need a party to run through a duty or a dungeon, the matchmaking system works consistently well and stays in the background until it’s time to ready up and fight.

If you’re already playing this game, you don’t need me to tell you all this. But you might be interested to know that once a few minor tweaks are made, Final Fantasy XIV runs like a dream on Linux.

I’ve put at least 40 hours into it on Linux, and once you’re in-game everything works flawlessly, with average framerates just a tiny bit lower than on Windows.

Getting to that point takes editing a couple config files, so let me walk you through that.

  1. I don't play it on Steam, so I've been running it through Lutris with Esync/Fsync enabled on a TKGlich 5.14 kernel flawlessly. Rather than going through the regular launcher, I've been using the install link in Lutris that installs "XIVLauncher", which is a third party launcher for the game. That install script runs on an older version of wine, so you might have to select a newer version of wine if you want new features after it's all installed.

Haven't had issues with the opening cutscenes myself. Maybe the Lutris wine versions have some sort of GE-style media fix built in? But yeah, once you've done a bit tweaking, this game works perfectly. I highly recommend using Fsync if you can, not because it gives extra performance, but at least in my Kubuntu install, using that with a TKGlitch kernel smooths the framerate out significantly and avoids microstutters I used to get.

EDIT: One more thing I thought of is I usually have Lutris set to disable desktop effects on launch because KDE desktop effects can kind of negatively impact performance in this game.

  2. This was the first Will It Linux episode that I watched. I really really appreciate that you also mention the bugs and the solutions to fix them, or to avoid them. This series NEEDS to cover ALL Windows games out there, and with the Steam Deck getting closer to launch, this series is only gonna gain more popularity!

  3. Have you tried the extended free trial of the critically acclaimed MMORPG Final Fantasy XIV? You can play through the entirety of A Realm Reborn and the award-winning Heavensward expansion up to level 60 with no restrictions on playtime.

  4. For context: I , like some others, play the standalone version via Lutris.
One issue that I've run into is that FFXIV does not properly recognize the PS5 controller (currently running an up to date Pop!_OS 21.04 which has the 5.13 kernel).
The configuration is totally borked and is not editable in-game or via changing the appropriate lines in the files.
Tried fixing by updating the wine runner the game uses in Lutris but no dice. Based on this my theory is either the PC version doesn't fully/natively recognize the PS5 controller (at least not yet) or there is some sort of communication problem when running through wine. Hopefully this will change in the future and is understandable as the PS5 is still relatively new.
PS4 controller works perfectly fine though so it's not a massive issue for me as I also have one of those.
Also of note is that you should have your controller plugged in before you boot into the game proper and if it becomes disconnected you will have to fully exit and relog into the game to reconnect it in my experience.

  5. GREAT news for anyone wanting to try the extended Free Trial. Just installed from Lutris (which you have to do for the trial) and played for like an hour and the game JUST WORKS. Literally everything just worked except from my Dual Sense controller but I left a review on ProtonDB on how to make that work. In 4K FSR I get 300+ FPS with a 5950X and a 6800XT. Glorious days for Linux gaming! pog

  6. Are you open to trying non-steam games? I just bought Kena: Bridge of Spirits on the Epic store and I've been trying to run it on Pop.OS 20.04. On my desktop PC with a 6800XT, it seems to run fine albeit with some stutters when launching through the epic games store, which itself is launched through Lutris using the default Lutris wine version. I can't get it to launch on its own without opening it through the Epic Games store, though. On my laptop, which is also running Pop.OS and has a GTX 1650, it launches on its own without needing to open Epic Games first, however it gives me an "out of VRAM" error after a few minutes. Goverlay doesn't seem to display VRAM usage on my GPU, so I'm not really sure what's going on. Haven't done too much diagnosis, but maybe worth a look for your series? Great content.
