The story and lore of FFXIV is absolutely amazing and definitely worth playing.

A Realm Reborn serves to introduce the setting, characters, factions and history of Eorzea. The expansions build on that. I recommend people invest the time to immerse themselves in order enjoy the payoff later on.
I liked ARR
it develops the scions as your family; you now care what happens to each and every one of them.
I'm sorry but if you have problems following FFXIV's main story I'm seriously concerned because the big of the story is really simple, sure the lore and worldbuilding may be confusing at first but it's truly not that hard especially compared to WoW where you have to go to Youtube to understand the story.
BTW Shadowbringer is by far my favourite story in a game it's truly GOAT.
ARR isn't groundbreaking, but it's a solid 7 outta 10.
The story is good, but I think that it gets more interesting when you join the Scions. Whether you start from Ul'dah, or Gridania or Limsa Lominsa, each is good and I think the remembrance of the battle at Carteneau and the fallen 5 years later is an interesting part of the early story as well.
Nope. Story being good or no I don’t like the aesthetics and the UI. If I don’t like either of those things I don’t want to play. 🤷♂️
I wouldn't use Mass Effect as example of story. Unless you speak about BOTCHED story. 2012 happened. As did ME 3 ending which was horribly illogically written and rendered entire franchise dead. ME suffered various problems writing wise.
And I still remember how I was trying to understand how you can make 'space magic' with fitting Shepard's DNA (!!!) to fit every other race in galaxy – inclueding turians and quarians who are dextro based ! Not to mention voluses which are acid based + Javik who has 4 strand DNA.
There way too many issues with writing and basic logic alone for ME 3.
I will spare Witcher here, as I don't intend to play it – I only play RPG's not some action games with stats. I read books and well I had very mixed feelings about author's writing of the saga. Too immature for my tastes.
Alas I do recall people saying Witcher 3 writing wasn't that great in writing, then again people were stating that whenever they felt safer from fanboys – and it was in groups that talk only about writing in general.
Hmm your describe doesn't inspire much faith either that they did anything with Yennefer.
As for FFXIV .. I simply do not believe the writing is that good. Part of reason is because I fail to not notice that Japan does love it's 'weird for sake of being weird' type of writing. Weird isn't complex there, it's just there to be weird. Logic is also usually thrown out of window to not interrupt 'weirdness'. When a person who enjoyed FFXIV even states to me how they prefer ESO writing due to it being more mature … your belief in FFXIV 'amazing writing' is pretty small.
Then was describe by player of FFXIV how they were told by questgiver to go through entire map to deliver letter, and then were sent back with reply back to questgiver. That .. sounds like waste of time rather then quest.
Add on top of that things players of FFXIV admit, while playing different games. For example I was asked by player of FFXIV if the reason that I have male characters is because of problem NONE YOUTUBER/STREAMER talks about in regards of FFXIV. They asked me if I am playing male characters in ESO because of creeps talking about raping on whispers whenever I (or anyone, they were said to even whisper that to guys playing female avatars) play female. I said no, because ESO doesn't have such people at all.
I felt sad when they mentioned how women playing FFXIV had to switch to playing males just to avoid these disturbing whispers.
There are other reasons why I will stay clear off FFXIV (housing, that disturbing portion of people, the cult mentalities on internet, anti-alts design, subscription demands, digital prostitution, reliance on cutscenes to tell story, very little role play aspect given writing, people who seem obssessed to make sex baits rather then characters + warnings how you can literally play hours on hours and not met a single person etc.) all make it sound like the game simply isn't for me. I role play after all, so my priorities are not exactly met by all signs how FFXIV is.
I couldn't agree more. The only reason FF7 is still my favorite is that it was my first.
I have never played Witcher, but that high praise from you makes me super curious and the show is great.
Finally someone said it. When I started with ARR few months ago I excepted to be bored because everyone was telling me that its bad. But when I finished ARR… I felt it was good. It’s a good world build. Both base and patch content. Just think about this, that “notorious” patch content laid foundation for all next expansions.
SO MUCH STORY!!!!!
I played FF. The story is boring. Not engaging at all. Half the time I had nfi who any of the characters are and nothing happens to make me care.
FFXIV is THE most beautiful videogame for: pet collectors, mount collectors, gamblers, pet battlers, PVE'rs, RP'ers & transmog collectors. For a PVP'er simply isn't
Ff14 : Overall musik sucks / overall sounds is bad till not existing besides footsteps/ Graphics on highest PLUS filters and I am still amazed how bad the world looks with those awful lightning and funny broken shadows/ WoW login window gave me more chills then the first 100 hours of ff14 / overall movement and sounds like the console version of Resident evil ( hilarious)/ only FXAA in 2021 is a freaking joke / uninstalled ff14 and WoW middle BFA
I'm giving ARR a go and halfway through the MSQ. It's not bad but I don't have a connection to it
Everything is relative. When FF vets say that ARR sucks, it's because they know that the expansions are so much better. They don't mean "it's bad period" they mean "it's bad compared to…" Moreover, it's because they want to set expectations. They want to lower your expectations, so that when you play it, and you happen to enjoy it, you don't end up disappointed. FF Vets will however hype up the quality, and be overprotective of certain things, like the SHB MSQ, or Stormblood/Heavensward Raids, etc. etc.
yeah…people are also saying stormblood story sucks. Its not…its good.
Nope, nty. Never playing FFXIV. Hate the aesthetic. (My son plays it and Apex, though.)
It is a badass haircut though.
But Minfilia and the rest of the scions are annoying. Moenbrydia looks like a man. The supporting cast of HW is awesome.
If you have not played the original ARR, man it was bad, but I enjoyed every second of it. Been playing since ARR beta by the way and played in PS3. The only way to level up back then with efficiency was FATES! I know EVERY best fate to do in every level. Dungeons barely gives EXP and WAR was broken and unplayable but still need to bring in Raids cause party composition for LB matters. ARR really had gotten better after the patch and man the 2.55 was so worth all the previous bad quests in ARR.
ARR is highly underrrated, especially since the 5.3 rework
Also, the best story ever told in gaming is FFXIV, specifically ShadowBringers but its all one continuous story and its not close.
The issue vets have with ARR is twofold. The devs trimmed down maybe like a 1/6th of the quests in the 2.X portions during Stormblood (which they'd been talking about for a while) and at some point buffed the exp gain so you aren't underleveled for certain legs of the story in the second half of 2.0, but vets claiming "ARR is painful" comes from how looooong and tedious it used to drag on for. We lived that, and trying to get friends to play only for them to quit somewhere in the middle was discouraging. And that made sense for 2013-15 when they were stretching out quests to make it seem like there was a lot to do, because 1-50 needed to feel like a full-ass game and 2.1+ was only just starting to slowly deliver content: 24 mans, coils, maps, and hunts and that's why 3 dungeons per patch were released and relics were there at the start and why they swore never to release a class mid-game ever again (argue for or against breaking that promise with Blue Mage).
And because 1-50 is no 50-60 in terms of length, etc, we try to tamper down people's resolve by telling them, "yeah, we know, ARR sucks, but you just have to get through it for the good parts of the game." And that does come off slightly as saying the story sucks…..but we're also we aware of it being the foundation of the overall story. And it's a lot to pack into 50 levels where it will then be slowly unfurled with time, but it still doesn't go a lot of places. And you're still teleporting everywhere seemingly needlessly. We say what we need to to get people through our own rose-colored experiences, which aren't the case anymore. It's still a grind of time but you certainly aren't gated by your level. We aren't fate grinding in coerthas and northern thanalan while we wait for our queues because we're two levels short of the msq's next quest. So yeah, we just….say it sucks.
