Why does “Use Cure 2, not Cure 1” not always land? Well, there can be many reasons for that!

With this one video, r/TalesFromDF has been destroyed.
I just earned my mentor status and unlocked mentor roulette, so seeing this video before stepping into that role was really helpful and insightful.
This is why I don't give advice lmao. I'm too exasperated with people to realistically be helpful to them.
Recently had a mentor who was healer refused to use mitigations but blamed me the tank and said "i had no issues with other tanks".
One thing I like to do is the age-old technique of criticism sandwiches. Ask if they want advice, and then compliment them on something they’re doing right before telling them what you want them to know. Finish by complimenting or affirming them again, so that way even more harsh advice hits a bit softer.
For example, if someone is using Cure I for supposed freecure benefits, I would start by telling them something along the lines of; “I like where your head’s at, but fishing for freecure often ends up wasting more mana and time healing than doing what you’re really best at. That being smashing skulls with that stick of yours.” Generally this works pretty well for me, if they want the advice.
When you are a butler, and you are assisting in anything like homework, you are supposed to tell them the correct thing while acting like they already know the answer. Such as “as you know…”.
I think the leveling process itself could be better explained in game instead of relying on other players whos advice may not even be correct. There is of course the play guides but they do not go into too much detail other than telling you the very basics of what your job does and an explanation on what your abilities do. Black mage is especially confusing for new players. I feel like a hall of the novice type of approach but for individual jobs could do wonders on teaching basic combos, rotations, and the appropriate ways to use certain skills.
having been sent a tanking guide at the end of a fight before, i just dont tank anymore. feels too bad to.
Giving Advice Opener and Rotation
As a fellow mentor… I never pressed the like button this fast in my life. Really great explanation! You can only teach people who want to learn, so first step is always to figure out does this person want to learn? If yes, then how can I best help them to learn.
I think people need to drop the "you don't pay my sub" mindset. I've seen people berated for nicely giving advice. A mentor especially should not be afraid to give advice. That's the entire point of being a mentor. Unless the advice is silly people need to get over themselves and listen.
To be honest I also think there is a game design problem if new players can so consistently fall into these bad habits.
These types of players will not seek out external resources to know how their job is intended to be played BY THE GAME, and the game does not really provide anything to teach against said habits on a job by job baisis (we only RECENTLY got an OPTIONAL tutorial for mechanic markers…), or invalidate them (most of the MSQ content is on the very easy side and can be cleared by pressing random buttons, perpetuating any bad habit built up as "it works anyway so I'm already doing well!")
In the case of Cure I, Freecure and Cure II, it feels like it's literally just a relic of a bygone era back when MP management was a much bigger part of playing the Job, now there are so few reasons to ever actually use Cure I over Cure II that Cure II should just replace it when unlocked.
i’ve noticed lately in particular (in my server anyways) that people have been getting Really bold over very minute inconsequential things. once someone using a plugin i forget the name of that shows party raid cooldowns harassed the hell out of our healer for not using lucid dreaming on cooldown which is…. just insane, frankly. wish more people would just be Normal about giving advice*
When I see someone using one of my mains ill usually just start out saying its one of my mains and if they want any tips I'm happy to help.
I definitely gauge how I react based on dungeon level. If it's anywhere in ARR or HW I'll usually say "hey, mind if I mention a tip for <insert job?". If it's StB onwards I'll usually ask "mind if I ask why you're doing xyz?" and depending on whether their response is logical I'll either say "oh that's neat" or "oh, hmm… ok then" and let them figure out there's something weird about it on their own.
I just ask if I can give advice first. If it's a mechanic, I just state it broadly so Noone feels targeted.
There's also the "Can you help ME" route as well. "I'm struggling healing between the dps and the tank, could you use your AoE a bit more to keep everything focussed on you?" or something along those lines.
Even if yaknow. You're not struggling with it.
Another tip for talking with people Take off the Mentor crown before trying to coach people I've had a much easier time explaining things to people without them freaking out and telling me off for being a mentor.
great video, as a former cure1 healer i did it because of mp. at the time i had difficulty with the mp management of whm and it seemed obvious to me that 500 potency heals for 400mp is better then 800 for 1000mp. only using cure 2 in times of need. so if you back then would have said to me that cure 1 is bad without further explanation then it was difficult for me to see why that is the case. like you say, asking me to explain could help you understand the real issue i was having. which wasnt the fact i was using cure one but rather that i had issue with mp management. if you helped me with that i would have been more then happy to switch to cure2. as i later did when i came to realise how to deal with that myself.
I don't think people saying things like "cure 1 bad" are trying to "teach" but just boosting their own ego.
If someone thinks you're an asshole, they're not gonna want to hear a thing you have to say, it doesn't matter if what you're saying is right
What I like to occasionally do to avoid upsetting people (mainly in larger group content), is, if someone is struggling with a mechanic. I'll ask for someone else to explain it to me so that they can read it without feeling like the dumb one.
If something major happens due to a boss mechanic, I'll start with, "Man that <boss ability> sucks. Do we need to <right way to do it>?" That way, those that know can affirm and those that don't can learn.
And I ALWAYS look to see who is viewing a cutscene at the beginning of a dungeon or raid. It's a great insight if someone hasn't done it before.
I have. WHM at lvl 100 and I use Cure 1 all the time along with everything else. People in parties always have something to say when it comes to healing. Any other class such as DPS no one says a word but the moment I play WHM ppl have something to say. One thing I love about WHM is that when ppl run their mouths I can curse them out especially when no one is dying. 😂
I’m always open to constructive feedback on my healing, especially from co-healers or tanks who request something specific, like more shields. However, some of you deliver your advice in a way that comes off as arrogant and condescending.
The game offers multiple ways to play effectively, and your way isn’t inherently better than anyone else’s. If I prefer to use Cure 1, that’s my choice—if you think Cure 2 is better, feel free to queue as a healer yourself.
Nobody pays a subscription to be insulted by random strangers. Feedback is fine when it’s respectful and helpful, but the lack of social skills in how some of you communicate is unnecessary and uncalled for.
The comment section is wild. Its kind of insane how many responses boil down to "if I don't act like an asshole, this random person will definitely make my game session worse and that is just the worst possible outcome."
there's a phenomenon in WoD called the "doton 1 case" where ninjas use doton on the first boss of the raid, because supposedly, DOT's eventually end up dealing more damage if you don't know how tics happen. everytime I see it, I type "Ninjas, here is a tip: Doton is a gain on 2, if you are facing a single target, raiton is more damage in general". I'm not pressed if people listen to me, but when we get to the second solo boss, I don't see the dotons anymore, so I assume it worked, which is nice.
I had a Red Mage in a dungeon once that I could tell just picked it up. Level 50 dungeon, starter job clothes and I noticed he was just casting veraero/verthunder and I told him. "Hey you should try using Jolt, then use Veraer/Verthunder, it'll make the game more fun." I could see him try it and he was like "Oh yeah that's 100 times better thank you" then went on about how he just picked up the Job and stuff. I'm one of the few (sadly) that take their status as mentor seriously, even when I play on my alt that doesn't have it on.
I had a really helpful experience a few months ago. I was new to Bard/Archer, and when I took aggro from a mob the tank hadn't touched yet, I started kiting it, trying to kill it from range. The tank said something along the lines of, "Gentle reminder: always bring mobs to the tank." To which I thanked them. I now do that out of instinct whenever a mob comes after me.
People on the forums and subreddit will sometimes advocate for not giving advice because "Nobody will listen, you won't help them", though of course that's the minority. However, ever since I came back from a decade hiatus, I've been really impressed with how patient the community is; when I load into a raid and I'm like, "Hey, I'm new to this one, so please bear with me." Someone will usually be like, "Don't worry, I've got you." Which immediately helps put me at ease. Now I do the same thing to newer players.
Thank you for the videos, dude. I'm glad that there are people like you in the community.
Its crazy how hard you have to baby someone just to ask them to stop throwing the encounter, and then most of the time they’ll keep throwing lmfao.
99% of GNBs in m3s PF don’t have HoL on their hotbar. You can approach a mfer as nicely as possible, but they don’t care. “I do rep, you do mt stuff”, and then they don’t even use reprisal for half of their turns to rep.
Whole bunch of braindead smooth brains who make up the majority of the playerbase do not care about doing something better, doing it right, or even doing anything at all. They’ll optimize the worst possible ways to play, and it doesn’t matter how nice or gentle you are because they lack a second brain cell to rub against the first to even understand what you’re saying.
Being a burden is their default state of being, they literally cannot comprehend anything else. Primal’s called Primal because those feral fucks are playing the game through the paintings on the caveman walls.
Don’t even get me started on prog liars 😭
