  1. Sorry to be that guy but why are you singing 14’s praises when you are barely halfway through? Don’t get me wrong, I agree, it is the best MMO on the market, but you seem to be talking about a game of which you’ve just scratched the surface.

  2. I think there is a big confusion between RPG and adventure games, what you mean by a "game with story" is an adventure game, not necessarily RPG. RPG means playing a role, being the character you chose, building and playing your own story in the world, not necessarily the pre-scripted story like in an adventure game. Simple game like The Sims has more RPG elements than current MMORPGs because there is so much more I can do with my character, give him certain personality, make decisions that are my own and not pre-scripted. The story is important for setting the context, a backstory, for example the story of Thrall and building the Horde and Durotar. Now go and play an orc hunter or whatever, that's your role in the world, go and explore, create your own story, meet people, overcome challenges or become a sausage vendor if in Orgrimmar if you like. That's your story. It's what RPG is.

  3. I really appreciate your analysis on this idea. One thing that I've been considering is that a grind doesn't feel particularly grindy when you are choosing to do it, and have a reward in mind for the grind. An example for me is flying a circuit in MoP that kills elites that drop a particular loot bag. I haven't done it in awhile but I used to do it every day. I'd then use the contents of the bags to craft jeweled panthers which I'd sell on the AH. That was fun for me at the time. When the panthers stopped selling it lost it's reward, and was no longer as fun. I think what made doing the callings in Shadowlands feel awful to me was that I didn't feel like I was choosing to do them. Their only real reward was renown, and that didn't particularly feel like any kind of reward or progression toward a goal. And running dungeons for a small chance at a gear upgrade just really feels unrewarding. I haven't done that since early October.

  4. The thing is, MMO shouldn’t be a standalone Genre to begin with like it has. It’s a Sub Genre. MMO just means it has a lot of players in its world. If a game was just an MMO it would be very boring. The RPG part of the game is much more important. WoW has been focusing more on the MMO part of it and less on the RPG. More “How can we keep massive amounts of people playing” and less “How can we give the player fun and interesting things to CHOOSE to do”

  5. Something not mentioned are the huge changes made after heavensward. Alot of QoL changes, making it way more fun. Despite people doing things minimum ilvl now, it really does not compare to how it used to be.

  6. It's very true. I have many choices and choosing makes me happy. I float around on enjoying msq/side quests.crafting, collecting irregular tomestones, clubbing, my apartment, glamour collection, side quests, and helping sprouts with lower level content. I choose each day to do what I want instead of chores in WoW. My WoW copium is gone for a game I loved for a very long time. I'm here to stay in FFXIV.

  7. Part of why FF14 is so good is because its story really does hearken back to the golden age of Final Fantasy – FFs 4 – 10 (in general, the SNES and PS1 eras). Not to discount 1-3, which were good in their own right, but they were stunted a bit due to the limitations of the NES. And Yoshi-P took what was good about WoW at the time (mostly game play) and his staff gave it a story worthy of the Final Fantasy name. Truly, the Final Fantasy series and Square Enix are the reason why JRPGs even became a thing in the West.

  8. The advantage FF14 has is story, how they tell it, how much they invest in it. The gameplay is just not as smooth or as interesting. It does feel like WOTLK-era raids, without the WOTLK-era class design. I've now tried to play FF14 3 times and I cannot get through it, it just doesn't grip me. If I'm going to play Final Fantasy I'd rather play the true RPG.

  9. I don’t agree with “borrowed power” in reference to FFXIV progression. Naturally a level cap necessitates new gear for those levels, but nothing is borrowed here. There isn’t a system of power being removed and replaced; your character is in fact, stronger. You didn’t give anything up.
