I had fun with DT, but I can understand why other people didnât. Iâm excited for starting our new adventure, although maybe a stormblood style story may not have been the best kick off (although still needed for what they were presenting)
Honestly, even just having a week away from the plot (and Wuk Lamat) was enough for me to re-evaluate my stance on Dawntrail's MSQ.
The funny thing to me is that I thought Dawntrail was a return to form. That, even though we're the Warrior of Light and the GAME is about us, the stories we've played through never really have been. Sure, we've had moments. But, until Endwalker, every other expansion was someone else's story that we got to be involved in.
DT's storytelling was missing maybe 5m total of WoL focused bits. Some quick "WoL and Scion" asides to bluntly comment on how things are going out of ear shot of Wuk Lamat. We had one moment like that but, it should have been more of an ongoing thing.
Aside from that. I really wanted a mini-game instead of the defend the train cutscene. As well as WoL being visible during Wuk's sequence and a "Ask WoL to take care of it" button when Bakool's minions interfered.
Though I think there's a separate valid complaint about our WoL being slow to step forward in the actual crisis moment.
Everyone knew there would be a shift after Endwalker, and most people were prepared for the WoL to take a bit of a backseat from the spotlight for DT. That does not excuse the mess that we got. They somehow managed to make me look back at ARR super fondly.. like… that's almost impressive. The absolute lack of player agency was bad, but I have never in my life felt so suffocated while playing a story as I did during Dawntrail. I would take any excuse to not continue the MSQ by going mining, fishing or whatever thing i usually loathe, just to catch my breath from the oversized lion lady clawing at my heels.
The one good thing Dawntrail did, was make me really appreciate the duel we got with big papa Dawnservant,. It made me feel like my character actually existed and was recognised for a whole 10 minutes.
i totally agree with this opinion. i understand the frustration that others are having but i personally think it did phenomenal at introducing a new cast as well as setting the foundation for a new arc as it is supposed to
Giving an opinion no one asked for:
I don't mind a story not being about us, per se. Just it felt too side-liney. I know the Hildebrand stuff has mixed opinions, but I think what it definitely does well is making it about Hildebrand, but YOU are still like actively participating.
Dawntrail just feels like we're watching most of it. And it's just a shame cus there were moments where there could gave been more interaction while still maintaining the idea of it being about others.
Honestly, I don't mind being a side character. Because SE can't really give us much of a character, the WoL is rarely the one moving the plot forward, instead being directed by the Scions. Taking a back seat to an actual main character just feels natural.
It's just that the way they handled it in DT was… flawed at times.
this is what I've been saying. For once I get to not be the main character and be the support and I think they did a great job of it.
A bit more to it than just that.
I think Mike/Preach worded it the best, Dawntrails pacing is horrendous and the character we are following whose story it is supposed to be is set up to fail by writing team.
Many people came into the expansion liking her but at the end couldn't stand her.
I personally think DT was nice. Does it have it's issues? For sure, there are some annoying plot hole and slow/fast pacing for certain characters. Does it means it's awful/unplayable/worst than arr/SB? No. People's takes reminds me of what happen with WoW, where they continually power crept the entire story, over and over and over and over again. I personally don't want that to happen again with an MMO I've recently fell in love with.
I feel like it is still your story in a way because you are the mentor to Wuk Lamat. We are guiding her to try and learn to be the best Dawnservent she can be.
I'm not finished with MSQ yet, and as much as I love everything about Wuk Lamat, I'm pulling for Koana to be the new DS.
I see these arguments bandied about, but they're not correct.
1. I'm fine not being the MC. I did that in Hildibrand, where I'm basically background furniture. But if you're going to make me a secondary character, you NEED to make the MC a compelling, believable and LIKEABLE character. They clearly missed the mark on Wuk Lamat.
2. Everyone knows you can't keep raising stakes. No one was asking to fight Meteionra and then Meteionga. But they could have taken the story anywhere, and they came up with THIS? The issue was the QUALITY of the story, not the stakes.
I loved Dawntrail and had been deliberately not reading any fan reactions until after I had fully completed the MSQ. I was… shocked… to say the least…
This is how I felt about the story of Dawntraiil. This wasn't our story, this was Wuk Lamat's story. We were there to observe and help her if shit got real. Yoshi-P could have also had this work as a way for a new MC to be created and played, but they didn't go that route. I'm okay with our character not being in the spotlight for once. I just think there could have bee some better choices. Like the Scions felt almost completely useless in this. This should have been the adventure of Wuk Lamat, Erenville, Krile & Graha Blast (Kona).
Possible spoilers…
I didnt mind DT, but i did feel that the expansion took a little too much of a sharp turn by zone 5 and 6. I keep thinking that i would have wanted to know more about zoraal ja and his motivations. I also think sphene should have been introduced eariler into the story. Maybe as a mysterious and enigmatic companion to zoraal ja in his quest to become next dawnservant.
I'm so glad to hear that Jesse and I are still on the same wavelength
Everytime we had a fight or dungeon and theyre like "can you handle it?" I was constantly like "I had someone throw planets at me, I can handle anything now đ"
sounds similar to what they did with GW2 Secrets of the Obscure, where after the big story stuff with the dragons, we get one that's not necessarily our story, fine in theory, in execution, everyone kinda slowly got less interesting overtime, even cool demon lady got less interesting at the end
I dont feel the powercreep being an issue cause the reason we were so powerfull was due to hydalins blessing and azems stone
Dawntrail is someone elses story and thats good and the powerlevels being what they are makes sense because were "back down to mortal" so to speak.
Ff14 has done this in many major endings like defeating hades due to the aid of the exarch and the absorbed abundance of light, or nidgogg with hreasvalgrs eye as to avoid the proboem of "gotta fight something stronger" even when you take the game concepts like levels out of the story context
SPEEEEENE
LISSEN TO MI
But we already killed exdeath…
Me and my wife agree that the biggest issue is the Scions. They are just constantly showing up for no reason to do something that doesn't need to be done.
To avoid spoilers I'll be vague:
There's a part where you're about to enter a new area, and right before you do all the scions show up to "stand guard" and we get a whole stinking cut scene of everyone announcing their guard jobs, and then we NEVER SEE THEM AGAIN. No cutscene or solo duty showing them fighting off something as they stand guard. They go through a whole cutscene, you go to the next area, and you don't see them again until you're done in that area. You don't even meet back up with them.
And this kind of crap happens constantly.
Overall I really enjoyed 7.0, but there are some glaring issues with that. I would share more, but spoilers.
Writers should just stop power creep. Just do something different.
Never really viewed it as our story. We're an Adventurer first and foremost, Endwalker, Zenos established that. We're here for the thrill, for the unknown, to pit ourselves against the worst and through sheer stubbornness and resolve, push through.
We happen to be there through misfortune, luck, and circumstance. It is the story of an Adventurer who meets people, groups, nations, whom for above all, does it for the journey and experience of all life has to offer. Azem.
Dawntrail is just the aftermath of Gulool Ja's story. We were told we'd experience adventure in a new land, a promise made to Emet and Venat. Two prime companions, Krile and G'raha for this new land and to learn the story of Krile and venture forth with our selfless companion. Instead, we got BNHA's intro where we're told right off the bat, "How I became the number 1 hero," Wuk Lamat.
People always forget at launch is just a small part of the bigger story told through each big patch
I'm not disliking Dawntrail so far, but man did it give some whiplash from the tonal shift between even the post Endwalker story and the beginning of DT. I think they really missed an opportunity to ease us in on the change of pace by having the story they did for the quest line before DT started.
I was perfectly happy with Dawntrail, I basically saw it as my character being on vacation, they're not expected to fix every problem right now. Also, the fights were fantastic.
"Strongest person that ever lived"? Godbert and his wife beg to differ.
I hated the fact that the fucked the execution of the story of dawntrail.
