A full reaction and analysis on Yotsuyu’s story arc through Stormblood! Definitely one of the more interesting and divisive characters we’ve met so far in FFXIV imo! Let’s do this!

MUST ADD FOR WHEN YOU'RE DONE WATCHING – there's a lot more symbology in the final trial that I didn't cover, but to name a few because I'm OBSESSED with this kind of literary stuff:
1) The moon = typically symbolic of the feminine and chaos
2) The black/white division of the room combined with the patterns of her AoE creates a symbol VERY similiar to the yin and yang symbol, releated to the idea of opposing sides or forces warring in a bid to find harmony
3) The black vs. white symbology can be unpacked even further. The dark is symbolic of resentment and hate, while white (especially in the case of women) is typically associated with purity, virginity and innocence. When Yotsuyu became 'Tsuyu' after her memories were wiped, she was arguably symbolic of all of these things.
I'll stop being a book nerd now 😁 But there, it's all been said. Very impressive artistic design on this fight!
Say I'm biased all you like but this style of video is awesome and I love it!! Writers for video games don't get the light of day they deserve so this is perfect! ❤
Love this video, your reaction and review was absolutely welcome. Super looking forward to y'all going through Shadowbringer next!
So far, do how's the story? Is it better than WoW in your opinion?
Typically the first 2-3 patches after an EP are used to tie up the loose ends of the EP and bring its story to a full close. Then the remaining patches are used to set up the story of the next EP. Always a good idea to reserve judgment about a character until you get through the X.2 or X.3 patch.
You should also take a look at the lyrics for the trial song Wayward Daughter, which adds another layer to the storytelling of this tale.
Also the addition of the Gosetsu specter could be interpreted as also a suffering, that she believes she does not deserve a love and redemption that Tsuyu is receiving.
Tbh I'm really upset with how her story is handled. I mean, they made a female villain have a backstory of being abused by her family and her arranged husband, then sold into sex slavery, all the while being treated as less than human. Then, when she survives and is given a chance to come back, all of her old traumas and abusers come back and are allowed to mess her up again.
That would be bad enough, but then we get her dying speech, which is all about how Domans ignore the sick and awful things happening in their society, and Hien directly admits all of this is still happening right now…
… But he can't afford to rock the boat right now. He needs all of the nobles to sorry him, and if he made them stop abusing their wives and daughters, well, he might not be in charge any more. Just an absolute slap in the face to end it on. Whatever else Hien is, until he actually addresses this (admitted by both him and others to be an existing problem in society), he'll always just be that guy who refuses to make life better for women in his kingdom so that his seat of power can be more comfortable. What a coward.
I'm a cynical bastard too, have been my whole life. But as I've grown older, I've grown increasingly fond of earnest stories (provided they are told well…). It hasn't, like, made me less skeptical of the human condition or anything… but it's nice to consume entertainment where people can be good, can do good. It's something very appealing about FFXIV, I think.
Seeing your excitement about the story of Tsuyu, I have been playing since Heavensward and seeing new players enjoy the story is always quite a experience. Something that you made me realize at 35:39 even if Yotsuyu was the core of the primal, once she made the summoning and given that she has the echo she would have been tempered by Tsukuyomi, perhaps that lingering regret of hers at that moment represented a brief moment of lucidity before going full ham
I thought Yotsuyu was a great character.
Incidentally, Tsukuyomi is the Japanese moon god, but female in FFXIV.
Shiva is a male aspect Hindu deity, but female in FFXIV.
Nael van Darnus started out as a bloke…
In a huge poll of the best Final Fantasy games, characters, bosses & summons, and music conducted in 2019-2020 by Japan's public broadcaster NHK in which nearly one half million votes were cast, the second highest ranked Final Fantasy XIV boss & summon was Tsukuyomi (Castrum Fluminis) at #14. The highest ranked Final Fantasy XIV boss & summon was ranked at #3. To say anymore would be spoilers, though many may guess or know who it was. (The poll was conducted before the release of Final Fantasy: Shadowbringers Patch 5.3, as well as before the release of Final Fantasy VII Remake.) Japanese Final Fantasy fans thought highly of the Tsukuyomi trial.
Awesome video man. I think I should've paid more attention when playing Stormblood…This stuff is (or at least can be) so incredibly deep and I think most of it kinda flew over my head, so thanks for the video!
Awesome video, a nice change up from just raw reactions (those are good too!). It really was a tragic end to a tragic character, and by god the hardest part of the trial was fighting off the feels long enough to kill it. I never looked into the cultural references/significance of the fight (the Spider Lily, the floor etc), so that was cool to learn and certainly gives me a newfound appreciation for it.
I love this. You certainly did a lot of digging into this and I think that's awesome! Looking forward to you two reacting to the rest of the SB patches and eventually, into Shadowbringers
I have a little something to add in terms of Gosetsu's appearance in the fight.
I've often seen this with survivors of abuse. When they finally meet someone who is genuinely kind to them, they tend to react with guilt because at that point, there's a sense of self-loathing that's quite literally been beaten into them. It's like… they feel even worse that someone is being nice to them because they feel unworthy of compassion.
The long and short of it I guess I'm trying to say is that if she was welcoming the memories that brought her pain, her guilt from Gosetstu would definitely have compounded it, which is probably why he showed up at that point.
Just my interpretation of it.
I hated Yotsuyu……until her time with Gosetsu.
Perhaps your deep cynicism is what makes you a sucker for a good redemption story.
I like all your videos and I really enjoyed this type of content as well. Please do continue this as well
You are about to get into shadowbringer. Don't worry we can get sadder.
After you've done everything, or even on a whim if you're interested. I recommend watching the lyrics video of trial fights. Especially if you're like me whose very interested and keen on deep lore. A good example of this was the heavensward theme, it blew my mind when I noticed that the song is interpreted and split in 3way between, iceheart – ysaylle, ishgardians and dragons.
I'm a little embarrassed that I missed the fact that Hien's father was Cyan.
Spoiler: Fordola is a MAN! 😂
I hate that damn fight. It's so annoying and not fun. Any time it pops in roulette, I roll out instantly.
Great video and coverage. I also love that her primal theme song Wayward Daughter also ties into the theme of her duality and internal struggle.
A great analysis on Yotsuyu's story! I'm looking forward to your take on Lyse because I feel like she can be such a polarizing character. I know some people had a big problem with how she was written and her style of speech, but personally for me it reminded me of a pretty standard character archetype in your classic English YA/children's novels from Diana Wynne Jones and the like. I'd love to hear your thoughts on Lyse throughout the game!
What i take for the add phase, is that she suffer so much in her life and all the ghost figure are a manifestation of her heart. She start that thinking that all the abuse and hatred can convert it into power and its all that she has but appear of gotetsu in the end mean that somewhere in its heart still have hope and she finally realize that, but is to late for that now that she is a primal and then she give up thinking is to late for her now that theres no redemption to turning back. I always saw that fight like a clasic tragic opera scene.
Love the video, got nothing else to add but…
"CLONE!"
Do you have a place where you play the game? I wanted to see your live reaction to your Tsukoyomi fight!
I think she wanted to die in the end, she accepted becoming Tsukiyomi because she had kind of given up and didn't see herself as worth saving. So she became the monster everyone expected her to be, even if it hurt her for hurting Gosetsu again. I also think deeper down again she wanted Gosetsu to save her again.
Gosetsu's kindness also torments her because she believes she does not deserve it. She says it before she kills her parents, "I will not suffer his kindness." It hurts her.
