  1. Tbf Square probably wasn't too bummed since:

    1. It wasn't just a case of server congestion, they legit ran out of digital copies for the game

    2. That money printer went ham afterwards ,what with the exodus from WoW and the sudden arrival of players new to MMOs period.

  2. Modern SE really highlights the dichotomy of big game developers in Japan at the moment. You have the old guard that keep wanting to make quality games for traditional platforms, sometimes with too much reverence and freedom they go off in the deep end of years of development and massive story labyrinths, Yoshi-P is an exception to this because of FF14 1.0 failure, not the rule which you see with Kingdom Hearts and half decade long development times of today's mainline FF games. Then you have the new business of making mobile and GAS games for suckers, the objective to hook as many people's credit cards into your game's bank vault and keep it that way, with a cult of business suits wanting to pivot, not because consoles/PC is declining, but mobile market is exploding, that make the company leaders take notice. The ones who win are the ones who make the most money, one of the best things about this is that SE's mobile and GAS games don't make money but a few of it's games like FF14 have seen huge success. However this is mostly thanks to player's word of mouth, memes and streamers who spread the faith in the game. New games with SE's terrible marketing stood no chance of being bought and played, dooming Deus EX, Guardians of the Galaxy and Rise of the Tomb Raider. Not to mention as a Japanese company they see mobile being massive in Asia and want a piece of that pie, it's harder to convince top bosses the rest of the world still wants their games when even a layman can see how mobile games are a massive part of commuting in Asia. The worst that could happen is a Konami like situation, where the company just abandons it's history to go full shameless money milking, gambling being the big endgame for turning players into payment addicts.

  3. I saw that Kingdom hearts chart and I'm wondering how people think it makes sense to make a chart where Sora and Roxas are listed (as far as I can see at least) 7 times. I mean really? And this is just to explain who is a "somebody" and who is a "nobody" and a "heartless"? Like damn.
