Our Final Fantasy 14 journey continues! Today we are talking about the Rising Event in FFXIV.

Welcome back to Tiny Blue Games! My name is Csaw or Chris, and today we are talking about Final Fantasy 14 in 2021. Today we are talking about FFXIV’s Rising Event. The footage in this video will be composed of moments from the 2021 rising event, but the point of this video is to talk about the event more generally. After having experienced it several times now I can easily say the Rising event might be one of the smartest events in any MMORPG. It celebrates the game’s successes and reflects on the failures of its past. Most importantly it strengthens the bond between developer and the player more than any other game I have played.

As a relatively new ffxiv player, I have enjoyed giving my first impressions of the many different pieces of content this game has to offer. If you are interested in exploring the game yourself I suggest you check out the Final Fantasy 14 free trial. This trial lets play all the way to level 60 (including both the base ARR and Heavensward expansion), with no time restrictions. It was ultimately the free trial that convinced me to dive into the full game and the new Shadowbringers expansion!

👀 What are your thoughts on The Rising? Are their other MMO events that compare?

  1. I completely agree. For other events, let's be honest, I come for the reward. Yes I do enjoy the silly little light-hearted stories and the fun music, but I'm there to get my polar bear or my chicken suit. For the Rising, it's a completely different story, for the Rising I come to see what the Devs have to say. "There's a unique parasol fashion accessory? That's cool, but what does Yoshida say!?" I remember last year, I repeated that little quest to clean up the beach dozens of times just so I could read all of the messages in the bottles from the Dev team.

  2. That is a criticism that some veterans brought up: That the dialog you have with Yoshida should be slightly different if this is your first Rising, and I agree. Give you a little more context to that message for first timers.
I know the dialog at the start of the quest is slightly different, but the main "thank you" message should be slightly different too.
Nevertheless, this is my favorite event overall. The message in a bottle, the U'ldah fates, the cheap dungeon.

  3. This year's Rising event is my first ever. I was considering resubbing to WoW with gold as I have a couple of times over the last 5 months (as in that's the only way I've subbed to WoW in 5 months), but after this event I clearly see the difference in how WoW and SQEX views its player base. WoW is now afflicted by the same hubris Yoshi described when talking about 1.0 and they think we have no choice. This event shows the devs are completely aware that without the players, there is no FFXIV. It also shows they care to keep the players around. I have never felt that way when watching an interview with Ion or reading interviews or posts from Blizz devs, so I won't be resubbing as long as their attitude remains the same.

  4. Last year, I felt like the message was to us in the real world – to extend a hand to those in need. To help others even when it doesn't seem profitable to do so. It was a message of understanding and coming together in tough times, and 2020 was rough wasn't it? It's still rough, but I thought that message was wat Yoshida and the dev team were wanting to convey. It really warmed my heart.

I like every year of the rising. I was surprised a couple years ago (I think it was) when I was picking stuff off the beach and realized they were actually from the dev team directly. I redid the optional quest – not for the hundreds of fire crackers I got afterward – just to read each message.

I find out more and more each year too. The "Wandering Minstrel" is Yoshi P's in game avatar, and also the NPC who connects you to a lot of the EX fights. He literally sings your praises.

Also, if I heard right, Kipih Jakkya was one of the game's MODs during 1.0, and literally went around getting stories from players in the community near the calamity. So, what the NPC said was true – she did go interviewing adventurers until things got crazy.

One of the previous events had us fight in an instanced area against like, tons of Malboros and Chimeras and the like, dozens of them all at once. It was insane, and crazy, and… that was what happened in 1.0 before the fall. Mobs were spawned inside Ul'Dah. The players did their best to strike them down, while the MODs kept calling them down. It was crazy, and fun and… I had no idea at the time how connected it was with the events of 1.0.

Yoshi's costumes are also interesting – that is the level 70 Paladin gear he's sporting this year (which is also the featured class for EndWalker), and last year he was clad in Gunbreaker armor if I'm not mistaken.

I've met Yoshida in the void…. looking at a myriad of myself in every job I could obtain,
I've seen him with Nanamo and her stalwart protectors.
He's called me the Warrior of Light, and of [redacted for plot purposes], and he has done so based on my accomplishments (or lack thereof).
While not all the dialogue is unique, it does know if it's your first time. It also knows how far you've progressed, so certain little lines will be altered. (having several alts I can attest to this). The level of detail is fantastic, even if it's only a word or two here or there. I take screen caps of each year, so I can look back and remember this uniquely FFXIV event. ^_^
