Today I’m giving my thoughts and first impressions of FFXIV. This MMORPG has had many years of development and has an active community, but what are my thoughts after beating a realm reborn?
Thanks for tuning in~

You'll probably get to hear this a lot in the future, but the GCD issue becomes less of a problem as you progress in the game and get more abilities, in fact, as a bard you have started as one of the classes that get the most instant casts to work with. Obviously though this makes the keybind issue worse, and I would not have a clean suggestion for improving this. Personally, I have my shift and control bound to mouse buttons so I don't need to claw my fingers as much, but other than that, can't really suggest much.
There is one point of solace though, in that since the game is designed to be functional with its built in controller layout there is a limit to how many buttons they will have you need to press.
I can say that from a new player perspective, this is pretty spot on because I know that back when I was new, I had the same things to say (both good and bad) about the game, except the animation-damage thing because I mostly played as a melee class and I don't think it happens to non-projectile animations. I remember it took me at least half a year to progress through ARR because I stopped playing twice or thrice because of how 'boring' the early game was. I even deleted my original character (a female Roegadyn) and made a new character (a female Lalafell) and begrudgingly played through the early parts of the game again.
That being said though… a lot of the bad/annoying parts of the game like the lackluster storytelling and the GCD problem, as I'm sure Flow is aware of now that they've progressed more and more through the game, get so much better. Nothing can be done about the millions of buttons we have to press and the keybinds we have to set up though. We just have to get used to that LOL.
Small criticism. FFXIV is a themepark MMO, like WoW, SWTOR, etc. It has a little bit of sandbox elements (The housing system), but not much.
wow… this really sounds like the same game I had played before… Mabinogi, have you heard about it? it's very old but the same pros and cons, been playing that for a long time, like more than 10 years until Genshin.
To me MMORPGs are history, they requires too much time and attention, but I do miss the good old days when I do have the time to waste
Regarding pay to win: aside from the nowadays common level skips and in this game's case story skips there are 2 things that objectively let you get ahead of other players that I can think of from the top of my head. One is very minor: a mount that has increased speed and usually only matters at the start of an expansion since other players have very reasonable means to get the upgraded speed for the new zones as well.
The other is probably one of the game's scummiest things and it's the ability to rent additional "bank slots" and "auction house sell slots" by paying extra real life money fees per month for additional retainers. This objectively lets you earn more Gil (ingame currency) by being able to offer and store more items at the same time compared to players who don't pay extra money monthly. Gil is a major factor on new raid tier releases since you purchase crafted gear with it which at the start of a raid tier is usually the BiS option. Now, don't get me wrong, this is also a totally achievable option without the additional retainers, but the fact a subscription based game not even sells (which already would be scummy), but only rents you these slots for real life money is very scummy to me and I don't even know a free to play game that has you pay monthly for those things. They are usually a one time purchase, i.e. Path of Exiles Stash. Again, this isn't needed, but it still gives you objectively an ingame economical advantage over others for paying real life money monthly.
On most jobs the GCD becomes less and less noticeable, there are some jobs that even at level 90 mostly revolve around GCD gameplay, like Summoner or Warrior, but on the other and you have some that will make you knot your fingers if you want to play them well (emphasis on well) with their OGCDs, like Astrologian or Bard for example. Most jobs are like the barebone blueprint of what they will be like later up until level 60 if not higher and the few abilities you get on lower levels mostly being tied to the GCD is sadly a part of that design. Later some jobs require you to use one GCD and then during the GCD two OGCD abilities at times. I promise this will feel less and less like an issue.
The hotbar system however, yeah well, that'll get "worse" if you don't like the general idea of it. Also agreed on the base settings being super trash, including the base UI. Even worse is that there is no ingame option to simply copy paste settings and hotbar layout from one character to another. On PC you can do it with folder fiddling and on console you simply can't and have to redo everything.
I think your video was a fair and very understandable take and view from a new player. Enjoy your stay!
