Tank Anxiety in FFXIV

I’ve been a tank in Final Fantasy XIV, going through the entirety of A Realm Reborn and Heavensward as a Paladin/Dark Knight. Yet I still don’t feel fully confident in dungeons and raids

  1. i used to be the same, until i encountered a bunch of boss mechanics where the tank just needs to keep the boss busy while the rest of the party needs to do mechanics. Really, though, the worst thing you can do in a dungeon that would make your party hate you is going way too slow or making the boss face them. Don't forget to communicate, too. The worst situations I had in dungeons was when the tank was uncomfortable in pulling big so they were single pulling, but the dps wants big pulls, so they went ahead and pulled more mobs without saying anything, and the tank got mad and did a YPYT. Anyway though, i believe tanks should pull two packs at least. You're tough enough to take that. Be careful of what type of packs you're pulling though and what defensives you have available. Some mobs deal magic damage only, and some defensives reduce phys damage only, and it's those magic damage mobs that are likely to kill you. Remember that corridor in stone vigil that spawns two packs of ice sprites? Yeah that. Used to be a party wiper, that one.

  2. lewis watching ur video i notice things u can change a little 1st u save too much mp on bosses that means u wasted alot of damage make sure u never have 10k mp when fighting bosses, if u cap that means any mp gain from attack or skills are wasted,

2nd try to learn to wave 2 off global cooldowns inside ur global cooldowns for example : ur 123 combo u can use "hard slash" then "edge of drakness" + "plunge" then "syphon strike" then "edge of drakness" + "carve and spit" then "soaleater" and this is for all jobs not only drk and when u lvl up u get more crazy offgc to play with.

3rd ur healer in this video is a white mage and he didnt use a single aoe that do damage and stun the group of mobs things should have been easier and smother

4th ur stun is a single target 5 sec duration that means in that 5 sec ur taking less damage from the group of mobs

and lastly the ninja had 6 stakes of a debuff that increase damage on him from the boss, the boss one shot him with an aoe attack

  3. Your doing well. Most normal content is designed to be pretty forgiving. As a tank your main priority is tagging every trash mob and keeping enmity (which is easy nowadays) and making sure to cycle your tank mitigations so every big pack you pull you should have 1-3 tank mitigations per big trash pull.

As a former tank main, now a healer, one of our biggest pet peeves is tanks pulling large packs and NEVER using their mitigations. Or using one mitigation per big trash pull and blowing all of it on the boss. Most cases the trash mobs in dungeons are more dangerous than the bosses.

Another pet peeve is when the tank does not pay attention to the trash group's enmity and never lines them up so their abilities hit all engaged targets. (This is rare in most high end content, but you see it mostly from new tanks and sometimes from tanks that never realized to use their AoE abilities more often in trash packs)

Don't worry too much about optimization since your still going through the story part of the game. Enjoy the story and the journey first. You will naturally get better as you continue to play because this game does a good job (for the most part) at getting player skill levels up to par for normal game content all the way up to the last trial of each expansion.

If you are curious about other jobs or want to know more about your current job's mechanics, I suggest looking up WeskAlber 1-90 guides to give you a pretty good basic rundown on the jobs.

If you do want to maximize your tanking skills, I suggest leveling a healer or asking a healer questions to see the other side of things so you can get a good idea on how the tank healer synergy works in this game.

Other than that, enjoy the game and have fun.
