Talking FFXIV: The Alt Experience & WoW Comparison

Matt gets a question! FF chat: “Have we ever talked about how alts can progress your mains relic weapon in FF #Altfriendly. Also Borzja is such a better *grind* system than what wow has”. What’s your thoughts on this?

  1. Just no. The FFXIV way of 1 char all classes (=jobs) is nice for people who just focus on progress or don't care for roleplaying. A lot of people in FFXIV however do care about that, they live the social experience and roleplaying. Also people like me who just have fun playing different characters it sucks. Your alts (I am speaking of characters, not jobs) can't be tenants of your main characters house. Okay. Then just grind the money and buy a house on your own, right? Wrong. They can't buy a house either. Because housing is limited to one house per server. So your alt can be either homeless or live in an apartment or a room of your FC. You also can't trade with your alts. Only if you have an FC where you can share the vault, no other way around. There are no technical hurdles to all of this: Due to a bug 3 years ago people were able to befriend their alts. And all that stuff just worked. Flawlessly. They immediately deactivated it. Why? Because they sell retainers (=additional storage). If you could trade with your alts, they are obviously afraid to lose out on retainer money. They also are terribly afraid of damaging their Fantasia sales (Fantasia being the item from the cashshop that let's you cange your appearance). I know people in game who spent well over 2500 buckson Fantasia. The game just HATES alts. Even though they even charge 2 bucks more if you want to play more than one character per server. 1 char per server is what the game really, really, really forces on you, yet they call it the "beginner subscription". If having 2 or more characters is the "standard", then why is it such a shitty experience? There are a lot of reason why people play alts. Some do it for straight up roleplaying. Which is huge in this game. Some do it to have a male and a female version of themselves. Some just love playing different races with their different head canons on the character (a kind of roleplaying I guess?). Alts in FFXIV SUCK, playing one char and leveling the jobs rules. Or take store bought items: Most of them are character bound. Do you want to buy an emote three times for all of your three chars? I don't. It just sucks. There is no other way to describe it. Look up the forums, people complaining about housing for alts, etc. They promised to change housing for alts. They never lived up on that promise.

  2. FFXIV sounds like it would be fun but i cant even get the damn game working! setting up an account has proven to be such a nightmare that I just gave up. Ive tried making a few free trial accounts and every time it asks me to do some one time password thing that I cant even get unless I buy the game for a serial number. Stupid!

  3. if it helps, the very 1st go thru off all steps of Boja is long / grindy.. after that every next weapon needs less steps (2 of the most grindy steps are not needed anymore.. only needed for the very 1st relic weapon)
    ..
    hold thru^^

  4. One extra cool part of Bozja is that its synced, everyone is lvl 80 and same item level. So you can take a lvl 71 job in for extra xp while training your fingers on the level 80 skills/rotations without being undergeared for the content.

  5. they said at the start of the relics that they were made to be a grind and to be a way to get "raid weapons" for people who cant do raids but they will always be behind the raid weapons up untill the next expansion is about to come out(2 or 4 months)

they explained this back in 1.0 and people asked for them because the Raids were only ONE level and it was savage level and about 90% of the population could not beat Bind ing coils because of one reason or another*( cant git gud/ didnt have time to find statics) so they designed relics(boja, anima ect) weapons to be less than raid weapons but similar up untill the new expansion came out.

they made them grindy af , so they said that its the same as someone who put time in for raids to progress would be simlar. this happen about 7yers ago and its the same just diff types of grinds.

  6. This is why ff14 is really welcoming to new players despite being an old mmo. They incorporate old content into the newer content gear grind. By this method, even veterans have to go back doing old content which keeps the low level areas populated and doing old dungeons to help out new players.

While in WoW, end game is all about raiding. When you reach end game, you just raid, log off and wait til next raid.

In ff14, theres always something to do that keeps players engage. Wether they sync your ilvl to make all contents still relevant where you just dont stomp them or the way they distribute end game gears through various mechanics.

  7. All this talk .. about singular character. I don't know, somehow I expected you two to know 'alt' is term used in many MMO's and it refers only to alternate CHARACTER. You talk and talk about how cool it is that you are progressing singular character in many classes etc.
Class is not an alt. Class is a class, an alt is an alt. I am almost sure somewhere up there is MMO with class change tokens – nobody in their right mind will call service 'alt change token'.
Don't try to misuse old term to fit your narrative just because you see $$$$ from praising FF for no reason.
Alts are for economy reasons (probably wrecked by FF since people say you cannot share wealth), gameplay reasons (nullified by FF) and role play reasons (gutted by FF). With all of these basically botched FFXIV is ANTI-alt friendly.
And I am someone who likes playing an alts – I do not like sound of that game design at all.

  8. yea i left wow at the start of 9.1, just a day later after finishing the korthia starting quests. knowing all the shit id have to do just to get my MM hunter respected made me feel worthless with having to switch covs and regrind renown. to having to recreate my legendary to a ring slot just felt so defeated and i didnt even have one other lvl 60 cause the threds of fate stuff was so to much and you cant swap to the normal lvling if you do and no maw intro skip

  9. Matt bud, farm your first step with a blu mage and just do the fates in heavensward zones. You get a memory per fate completed. Alternatively, form a shard farming group and you can split farm all 3 memories simultaneously.

  10. There are alternative methods of getting the stuff you need for the relic weapons. Bozja is actually the slowest way to get them, if you want to get them fast use the alternative methods. I got my first one in two days.

I think getting the materials for Bozja is meant as a kind of bonus to all the other stuff in Bozja, it's not the way you should go if you're specifically going for Relic.

  11. The Jailer is a Freudian representation of the sexual urges of the blizzard staff. 5 seals to keep him in the maw(the repressed mind) are representative of the 5 restraining orders no doubt. The maw and the cosby suite are of course, parallels' to each other. Elune being a clueless retard is representative of the bystander effect, in which otherwise rational human beings can stand by and do nothing while heinous shit happens right in front of them. Maldraxxus being rotten and war-torn is reflective of the office dynamic, toxic and at each others throats, Revendreth is about the addiction to alcohol that is cause the "dudebro tw@ts" who work there to do cubicle crawls, and Ardenweald being about nature is supposed to be representative of the fact that "boys will be boys". Chains of domination is about how the women who work there feel chained to the job, unable to report to a higher up as they are all complicit in said acts, and unable to leave because this WAS their dream job. Anduin becoming evil is representative of the player base's perception of the IP, filled with boyish wonder and then realizing its all a bunch of shit.

Steve Denuser or how ever the fuck you spell his name is clearly a very intelligent monkey that they have hired to write a story, but its time to let him go back to his troop.

  12. I am doing the honor grind to max out some pieces in pvp and it's horrindous. Even with Comp Stomp it is making me not want to play. I am not sure where they copied the current singular progression systems from but it ain't it.

  14. So I might be confused here. But working on an alt job is not the same as working on an alt in Wow or Everquest in FF if you don’t have other jobs maxed for your main job you are really missing out on some cross abilities that are needed to play the game making alts in Wow to farm mounts more than once a week is just not the same as lvling up an alt job so your main job can be better now I have only recently made a second alt toon on FF and i have to do everything over. I’d say Wow has a way better alt system than ff unlock reps on your bnet and have all accounts able to do the new races same thing with DKs unlock one per server you can do it on other servers but on an another server in ff I’m starting from scratch made me stop completely and go back to my main I thought it was so bad
