(SPOILER FREE) A Starter's Guide to Spearfishing in FFXIV: Endwalker (6.0)

With the release of Endwalker, spearfishing was giving a complete overhaul, changing it in an extremely fun and interactive minigame! This is the basics that you’ll need to know to get started and spearing yourself some fish, crabs, and….. pickles?

🔓Unlocking and Starting Spearfishing
Once you’ve unlocked Spearfishing by completing the Lv61. quest “A New Fishing Ex-spear-ience” you’ll have access to the new and improved spearfishing minigame. To begin, use Shark Eyes to locate any teeming waters. By using the teeming waters (just click on it) the minigame will appear and fish will begin swimming by your screen immediately.

🐠Spearfishing Fish
Use the Gig skill to thrust your spear into passing by fish. To successfully spear the fish, you have to hit the weak spot on it, marked by the blue glowing brackets. You can spear more than one fish at once, if they align properly.

As you gig, the fish will grow wary of your presence, as denoted by the Wariness bar. This bar will passively increase over time, and will jump up a notable amount whenever you use Gig, regardless of if you catch a fish or not. You can slow the passive increase of wariness by increasing the number of fish you’ve caught.

The Catch Counter, in the upper left side of the spearfishing window, tracks the number of successful catches you’ve had in a row. The higher the counter, the SLOWER the passive wariness increases. After each catch, a radial bar will begin to deplete. If you do not catch a fish in that time, the counter resets to 0. If you use gig and don’t catch a fish (ie, you miss) the counter resets to 0. If you get to 10 catches, you can use the skill Electric Current – which basically catches every fish you can see on screen. It’s fun.

🔎Identifying Fish – their Size and Speed matter!
You can identify the species of fish that you can see based on the size of the fish, and its speed. Each fish has a unique size and speed, meaning that a single fish can not be both small and medium sized silhouettes. It’s only one! So if you know a fish you want, note the size and speed of it, and you’ll be able to know which fish you want to focus on.

For example:
Saltsquid is always a Large Size Silhouette that moves at an average speed compared to the rest of the fish.
Dreampickle on the other hand, is always a small size and is very, very slow.

Knowing what size and speed your fish is, can make your time spearfishing much more efficient!

✨Useful skills, Tips, and Tricks!
• Baited Breath will reduce the current amount of wariness by a notable amount, it looks to be roughly the amount of spearing one fish. This can be useful for if you want to catch multiple of a single type of fish. It costs 300 GP.
• Vital Sight will increase the size of the weak spots on all fish for the duration of the teeming waters. This makes it easier (or more forgiving) to catch certain fish. It costs 2 stacks of Angler’s Art
• Every fish has a chance to be a large sized fish, but silhouettes that have sparkles around them are GUARENTEED to be large sized!
• You can use Thalik’s Favour at any time while spearfishing, if you have the appropriate Angler’s Art stacks.
