In a Nutshell:
The Old Playerbase is gone, the new player base is far more toxic than the fans of old. With That Said, The General Chat is still MUCH better than other MMO's. People don't run over each other to help anymore, and there are MANY toxic players, but there is still the odd player willing to help.
Content is good: Not on parr with other final fantasy's, this story is still solid! Not EVERYTHING is Solo-Friendly, if you're not the sharpest player around you'll need friends to do the FUN stuff.
The End Game Content is ALL GROUP BASED. Voice acting is very "Versooth, mine allies, for thyne adversaries are afoot!" OR you can switch to japanese and be watching an anime (I listen to the Japanese Voice Actresses, where the young girls aren't 40+)
Gearing during end game is easier than other MMO's, but the best gear is impossible to solo.
Music is decent, but the BEST songs are remixes of other square game songs.
Most Importantly: You are NOT the Hero, in the sense of ability and heroism. Rather, you're the special child with the special power the heroes can't save the day without and need to protect with their lives (Sometimes foreshadowing can be fairly obvious). For those that are curious, the Hero of FF14 is Thancred; You get to meet him early on.
