I wouldn't buy anything until their competitor releases their products in three weeks. If what I'm reading is correct we'll a similar performance leap at a lower price, thanks to their chiplet designs. Perhaps they will do to GPUs what they did to intel and CPUs.
Maybe when the graphical overhaul comes, but right now? Hell no. Just slap on some GShade in 1080/1440 and you’re golden

I run a moderate GShade preset at 4k with a 3080, and I consistently get 80+ fps. Often 100+ in closed instances.
Really no reason for me to upgrade my setup until the big graphical overhaul in 7.0.
SKIP. Get a 30 Series and call it a day. Unless you're an enthusiast, save your money.
I am actually running it at 5k with a 3080Ti + Gshade and everything maxed , smoothest performance is still 60fps which it is rock solid at. As much as I like the 4090 I dont see any benefit unless you are running full 4k + games and RT as well , even the lower cards may be overkill still .
maybe with the 7.x enhancements maybe we will get above 60fps when in limsa

My next GPU is going to be from amd, as Nvidia have been dominant for too long and are treating their customers and partners worse and worse over time. As consumers supporting competition can only be good for us.
I mean up until a year ago I was running a 970 @1080p over 60fps with gshade while streaming, so I struggle to see a need for any top tier hardware if XIV is the most intense game you are playing. Yes higher resolutions need more horsepower, but I assume anyone with a 4k 120hz monitor is already running a beefy card anyways.

to be fair, its the more casual players which benefits from fps higher than 60 on higher refresh rate monitors. its not about the smoothness on the screen, but all the user inputs are visible faster in higher fps. its also confirmed that having higher fps on even a 60hz monitor influences the player performance as well. im rocking ff14 in 120fps on rtx 3060 and 144hz screen and i do feel the difference. but i have just full hd resolution
This isn't even really a debate. FFXIV is a very light game to run, on account of it being old as heck and designed to run on the PS3 initially and is still at early PS4 graphics. You don't need a 4090 for FFXIV. You don't need a 3090 for FFXIV. Even after the graphics upgrade in 7.0, you still won't need a 4090 for FFXIV.

Haven't upgraded my midrange system in a few years, with the 30 series dropping a lot I started reconsidering, the crazy prices get even worse where I am (South Africa) where a 4090 can go for up to 2800 Euros +-), managed to find a brand new 3090 ti for about 1100 Euros and decided to take the plunge as even though its still ridiculously expensive it should be fairly futureproofed for a good number of years (and most definitely overkill in the short term). As you correctly said to even come close to benefiting properly from the beast that is the 4090, it needs to be paired with at least a 4k high refresh rate monitor nevermind the rest of the system.

How do the benchmarkers get their numbers? I got 70-80 fps in 4k on max settings with 3080ti & 140-150 fps on same settings on the 4090. No where near the 210+ the benchmark numbers claimed. Not really complaining here since my monitor is only 160hz, but I'm just curious.

my 3070 runs ffxiv on ultradewide 1440p at 100+ fps in a lot of areas, perfectly happy with that and not planning to upgrade for a while
3050 ti laptop version does fine with mostly maxed settings 1440p
