Rise of the Tank: My Son Conquers Fear in Final Fantasy XIV!

With Final Fantasy XIV Endwalker 6.4 now out, the dungeons and raids are now back on the menu. With me healing, my younger sons DPS, with my wife jumping in every once and a while, and my oldest tanking, it wasn’t always that way. He had to overcome some fears in tanking, fears that some of us all face, even in the real world.
How did he do it? By not being less afraid, but by being braver. I’ll explain!

  1. You’re a really good dad, wow. I really wish I had a dad like you around growing up. What an important life lesson being taught through a game!

I used to have pretty bad anxiety back as a teen and it used to effect my schooling. I’d use to bawl my eyes out in huge gatherings. Years later, When an old friend suggested we run a tavern in FFXIV I was like “wait what how?!” And sucking up my anxiety and learning how to connect and talk really gave me some life skills I wish I had as that anxious teen trying to get through school.

This video reminded me so much of my own experiences and I hope your son becomes the best tank Etheirys has

  2. You have got to be one of the best dads I have ever seen, just hands down so freaking wholesome and awesome.

Now I'm tempted to get my own dad into FFXIV if I can lol

  3. White Mage was my first job in FF14 but now I have 5 characters on my first I have 12 jobs and on the other 3 characters I have 4 jobs on my last character I have 3 but in all of them I have Tank, Healer and DPS.
I mainly have so many characters because they fulfil a different fantasy and RP purpose and I do not want to fantasia all the time it breaks my headcanon really bad my main seems to be the character with the 3 jobs most people would think its the character with the 12 jobs

  4. Tanking is fun and my queues are fast. I honestly prefer it over playing dps or healer. I initially started tanking with DRK bc I liked the "conquer your shadow and weaponize it" theme and because it plays similarly to a dps. Scholar was fun because i was intrigued by a "fairy shield healer" concept and summoner and red mage are awesome for obvious reasons. 😊 awesome video

  5. Tanking is actually the easiest role!

Your rotation is easier. You have more health meaning you can stand in mechs and survive where other roles would die.

Just face the boss north and use some mit on tank busters. That's it!

  6. A father giving life advice through gaming… Never thought I'd see the day. 🥲

The patience and encouragement you give your kids in this MMO is truly wonderous.

I daresay we may have ourselves here a second coming of the "Dad of Light". (Something you might want to look up. Truly a heartwarming story.)

  7. I call this PF-Anxiety, partyfinder-anxiety – the irrational feeling that everyone judges you for every mistake, be it you made it or another one of the party. It's a totally irrational thing to have but it happens to a lot of people. Most people I got to know with this, myself included, at some point had made the experience where they were left alone on a level that scarred them and lead to them shutting themselves out to everyone. basically having an inner fight every time to please people so that they won't get any attention, which they desperately need to actually feel like having a place to be… it's a messed up bubble of protecting yourself while at the same time keeping everyone away that would need to help you.

If you have a friend or loved one who supports you, it helps you immensly to have that emotional anchor which helps you keep moving on. Thank you for sharing this story and keep on the great work. Hope this vid goes viral

  8. I definitely suffer from a bit of the ol' tank and healer anxiety. I switched from a Scholar main to Ninja sometime around mid-HW (and have been maining various DPS jobs since) because that fear of messing up as healer got too stressful. In some ways I feel like letting that anxiety win was kind of a mistake, because now I'm in the situation of avoiding practicing as healer because DPS is more comfy. lol

  9. really love this. the message and lesson. but I have a single point of criticism on this:
the tank does not set the pace in a dungeon. the group as a whole does.

tanks that think they control the pace are only 1 step away from 'You pull, you tank'
