  1. Every single time I'm excited for something– be it a game, a book, an album, a movie, a vacation– before experiencing it, I ask myself a simple question:

"What if this is not as good as I hope? How will I respond if I'm disappointed?"

It's an important question to ask myself, I think. Not because I need to devise strategies to 'cope' with disappointment, per se, but because merely allowing myself to consider the possibility of disappointment as an outcome prevents me from being blindsided by a less-optimal experience.

For me, it comes down to hope vs. expectation. I don't like 'expectations'. Expectations, when it comes to entertainment, are an entitlement that set a person up for disappointment. The difference between a hope and expectation can be nebulous to define, but at the end of the day, I think 'hoping' something is good allows for the possibility that it might not be– whereas 'expecting' something to be good does not.

Expectations defy ambiguity. If you are going out to dinner, and expect a meal to be the best thing you've ever ate, even a demonstrably great meal may not meet that definition, and disappointment is the end result. But if you're going out to dinner, and you hope it's good, it's much easier for the experience to exceed that threshold.

One thing I wish more people would wake up to is this: All entertainment, every bit of it, is ultimately a gamble until it has been experienced. Don't buy into trailers, don't buy into hype, don't sit around and daydream about how something is going to be the greatest thing you've ever experienced. It's perfectly fine to engage with hype, to be excited for new experiences, but don't assume the media produced to sell an experience to you is going to be representative of the final package. Look at who is making something, look at what they've made before– if it's stuff you like, gamble. If it's not– don't.

I hope endwalker is good. I hope endwalker is great. I hope that I re-experience some of the exhilarating emotional responses that Shadowbringers engendered in me. But it may very well not. I go into this expansion with a very vague and unstructured hope; that I will enjoy it. Not with a laundry-list of criteria I've been assembling in my head for months of what Endwalker needs to do to be the greatest expansion, or game, or whatever.

  2. Mind you the SCH and BRD memes aren’t regarding performance, they’re regarding play experience and job design. No one is doubting their performance potential for raids

  3. Even if against the odds that endwalker is a dud, it'll still be enjoyable. I'm still in the mindset that the team can do no wrong at this point. Like, do I wish they'd do a couple things different? Yes. But I still enjoy what they give us. Like, I'm still in the realm reborn section and I'm amazed.

  4. I only hope the story don't split and diverge too much. It's what made me lose interest during StormBlood. Or that there's too much bloat like ARR post patch story.
However I think they have learnt so much over the years that it can only be improved upon.

  5. If endwalker sucks then I’d be disappointed but nothing we can do about it however, being an expansion after SHB, I think there’s a good chance that our expectations are high so the game will suffer because of it. SHb is way too good that it’s hard to think how can they make endwalker as good as shb if not better. But knock on wood.

  6. Well what I said on Stream, I doubt I will but everyone trusted CDPR until Cyberpunk 2077. It's always a chance. I think the concern might be 6.1 but I'm confident in them creating a new and appealing story.

As for chances, hell I'm giving CDPR a second chance because Witcher 1, 2 and 3 were that good. I'll be buying Witcher 4 and if that burns me I'm done.

  7. I'm not bothered about Endwalker because it's climax to a story that's been building for 7-8 years. What I'm worried about is what comes afterwards. None of us know what 6.1 is going to bring or what it's going to be setting up. The Ascians, Hydaelyn and Zodiark have been the driving force behind everything that has happened in the game as well as everything that has happened for millennia before it with no real hint of anything else except extremely recently with the Terminus creatures and who/whatever they serve. Are they gonna be the new big bads? Is it going to go in a different direction entirely like taking the cure for tempering to Meracydia? Nobody knows and because of that I'm worried if they can make another story that at the very least lives up to the current one with the material currently available.

  8. Honestly, I don't remember the last time I felt this positive in a chilled manner about an expansion of a MMORPG that I enjoy.
The presence and attitude Yoshi has displayed in relation to the game and community since I started playing and following FFXIV (which was always the case from what I hear) is very reassuring to me. I think we'll be good.

  9. I'm expecting 6.0 to be ShB part 2 electric boogaloo. The MSQ will be good, the dungeons will be mediocre at best, and the non-dps jobs will all still be boring. What comes after that in 6.1 will be interesting though. If the story takes a nosedive after 6.1 EW could end up being the worst expansion ever, but that seems unlikely.

  10. I have all the jobs at 80 and I just play whichever one I like on a whim. I can't go back to an MMO where I'll be forced to play a specific class or spec or not get invited to raids. Last time I played WoW, I got a Fire Mage legendary and all I wanted to do was play Arcane but I couldn't even do that because I got power creeped out. It bothers me now in FFXIV when people take laughing at jobs seriously. Like BRD or RDM (which is actually very strong now compared to Stormblood) being memed as being bad dps jobs as if it actually matters. I've cleared savage on weak jobs, it literally doesn't matter as long as you don't die. Everyone who laughs at job dps probably don't even drink potions or eat food, let alone the skill to maximize jobs to the numbers they see on fflogs. Having the freedom to play what's fun rather is a luxury that doesn't exist in other MMOs.

  11. The funny thing about the story is when you are new and catching up on the MSQ you always get those moments when Tataru or Alisaie or whoever is like "Hey, it's been a while since we've seen you" when you just turned in the previous quest the second before. But now it really has been months since we did 5.55.

  12. Depends on how we define "suck". Is slightly worse than SHB considered "Sucking"? Maybe, some would argue yes. Expansions should build on the game and improve it. SHB was incredible narratively, but lacked in dungeons/zones. Stormblood was the opposite, and HW was the best of both. Square has taken a clear stance on the games design philosophy since ARR/HW. Less Variance, more familiar job gauges, streamlined dungeons, and overall less experimentation. This expac will determine if its the right choice.

  14. It won't be perfect, but I don't think it'll be a burning garbage fire. Still, it is always good practice to praise a company on current achievements to keep corporate heads in line.

  15. Well to be fair loldrg did have a bit of a point for alot of 2.0. The jump animation lock was really really bad, and they took more magic damage than any other job. So well that certainly is not 11 level of bad, it was still pretty bad.

Less than optimal jobs stand out like sore thumbs because 14’s balance is so damn good. Like HW PLD or 3.0 astro.
