  1. What do you mean?

Weeb refers to aspects of art that almost exclusively appear in japanese art.

If it's good or bad, weird or not is not in the content of the word, that's a subjective case by case thing.
The confusion comes when people use that word as an umbrella term for all the japanese specific depiction of art that THEY don't like.
That's why they can freely run amok and use weeb as a derogatory term for japanese shit they don't like but have no qualms with their fond memories of watching Dragon ball z.
That's why it's impossible to understand what someone means with questions like "is it too weeb?"

My personal beef with japanese art is the conversion of their art styles in the 2D realm to the 3D world.
    This includes Ff14.
It's not 3D that does it, it's the degree of realism their adopted with the transition to 3D.
Nintendo stands out in doing the perfect transition, they kept the cartoon/anime flavor into 3D. Blizzard also decided for the cartoonish look of WoW for the same reason. The movie however failed at that, and with diablo3 they made the opposite mistake…

Catgirls and clean shaven men with metrosexual haircuts work in the anime 2D realm, and cartoonized 3D, but the more you turn on the degree of realism the less it works, obviously.

  2. FFXIV has it's "weeb" moments, but this is a Japanese game so it doesn't really feel misplaced to me. It's mostly just an adventure MMO like the rest. The player base is much weebier than the actual game. This can largely be avoided by doing actual game content instead of just standing around chatting.

  3. 1:04 "give me a weeb anime off the top of your head."
Me: Naruto, sailor moon, cat planet cuties, inuyasha, DBZ, life of saiki k, my neighbor totoro, Excel saga, Konosuba and hell if you really want to count it, RWBY.
    Matt: my hero academia.
    Me: … I'll just… see myself out then…

  4. A realm reborn is not boring if you level like you do in WOW. Skip the boring text and only pay attn to big moments. Simple as that. Sick of all the negative about ARR, wow is frickin boring as shit in the beginning. Who the hell knows what the bloody story is and who cares. Just speed run through it. Same goes for ARR once you get foothold on all the systems just power level through that boring ass text dialogue. Its not bloody rocket science here. Its not as if your gonna miss anything. The crystals the BIG bad guys, the reveal of who the bad guy is then kill bad guys end NEXT

  5. Currently playing ff14 after 10+ years in wow. Finished ARR and really like the story at the end of ARR. I have to say that I still don’t like the lalafell. Can’t take them seriously especially how they are characterized vs how they look

  6. so what if it's a weeb game? if you like the game and want to play why should you allow other people's preconceptions stop you from doing it? pso2 is a lot more weeb and that doesn't stop people from paying and enjoying it. can you really say you enjoy wow right now? or are you just playing it for nostalgia's sake and because you sank years of your life in it?

  7. People need to be very careful that when using the term 'weeb' and when they think they are being edgy. That they aren't just being strait up racist toward Japanese culture in general because they are over-generalizing the term. It strays dangerously close to being something that meant one thing, and now means another.

  8. IMO media can't be Weeb. There are Weebs who play FFXIV; Weebs are people and it's their interests, behaviors, etc. that define the annoying personality.

FFXIV is literally just a game made in Japan that isn't 100% geared toward an American audience.

  9. WoW looks 'crisp' because there are likely fewer polygons on a character in WoW than a background object in FFXIV. The aliasing thing is annoying, but as you've said it can be ignored.

  13. Its stupid, immature and completely inacurate. I have loved final fantasy since the first game, far before the word "weeb" even existed. Passing up on this masterpiece of a game because of that just shows how insanly ignorant you are. I get its style isnt for everyone and thats fine, so if you dont want to give it a try because of that, understandable but still your loss.

  14. I've only ever heard "weeb" used as a descriptor for people, not properties and media. Going by the idea that a "weeb" thing requires a deeper understanding of Japanese subcultures and tropes though, I think ffxiv avoids a lot of that because it's been developed for a global market from the start. I guess I'm too deep in "weeb culture" to understand why potato people and catgirls are really that hard for people to wrap their heads around, bit regardless I don't think that ffxiv's story or characterization plays into the more "weeby" tropes of nekomimi and lolis.

  15. Weeb has become an overused word. Asmongold and his sheeps will make FFXIV worse. We don't need peole who wouldn't play this game cause "weeb" then start playing it to be like their sheep herder..

  16. All of Limsa is basically weeb. It’s gotten so ridiculously weeby that I quit playing. Cat girls wearing bikinis and screaming kawaii while they blow hearts to each other is weeby and no one can tell me otherwise.

  17. FFXIV weeb game? Naah not really a weeb game
But community? YES… If you think it's not you are probably new or you are playing a bunny girl with nickname "Sakura Chan" with literally copied for google translator random japanese words in character description
You think I'm wrong? Just go to limsa or twitter and very soon you will find some real degenerates

  19. I don't know if it is weeb or not, but you can’t deny there is a cultural thing.

I left wow because I don’t like how the game went and how they treat there players and now I play Eso. For a part I think it is a comfort thing. The only real thing I miss are the dwarves. Yeah you have the dwemer in eso but first they were not classic dwarves but a kind of elves and second they are extinct. Eso has more zones that feels comfortable for Europeans. Skyrim, Cyrodill and high Rock feel very Middles ages Western and Hammerfell feels Arabic wich is very close and known to Western people. Some zones doesn't fit in but they are so different between eachother they don't take over the overal cultural feeling. For example elsewyr feels south-asian but is only one zone. Black marsh feels Mexican but is also one zone. And some zones doesn’t fit in on anything on earth like morrowind and Summerset.

Japan was a country that closed its borders for a 214 years with their isolation policy. And even after that Japan stayed a country with a pretty closed culture and ethnic homogeny.
Europeans still find Japan and Korea a closed society with an alien culture, compared to other parts of the world like South America or Africa. While FF14 isn’t maybe that weeb you can’t deny ff14 is influenced a lot by Japanese culture (while eso is influenced by Western culture) and that gives ff for me an unfamiliar feeling. It is nice for a visit as tourist, but not for staying. Add the bad map and the oversexualised catgirls and bunny girls and I gladly end my visit. They have gnomes too in ff14 like in wow but these midgets freak me out even more.

P.S. If you are Western (or not ;)) and enjoy the game. I'm happy for you, tastes differ.
I just want to explain why I think I and a lot of people don't like FF14.
Like Josh strife Hayes would say "have a great day".

  20. This is nothing like what I mean with "weeb". It is a pejorative, yes. But it's a pejorative on the aesthetic that is anime has. It's so prevalent and starting to pollute all other entertainment. I don't like anime. I wouldn't mind it, if it stayed away from things I do like. But when it starts infecting everything else, I start to dislike it.

And no, it's not that I "just haven't seen the good anime" yet. Whatever defines it as anime, distinct from other cartoons, is what I dislike about it. The fact that you name it anime means it has an identifying feature – or several. THOSE FEATURES are what I don't like. And they are all over FFXIV from what I have been presented by all of my friends who keep trying to make me play it.

  21. I’m going back and forth between ESO and FFXIV. You don’t have to call it weeb, but there’s a clear thematic shift when jumping into FF. Like eating a steak dinner then hopping over to a candy store. Just different tastes, both serve a purpose.

I saw a giant horned man ERPing with a baby potato woman surrounded by cat girls dancing in FFXIV today. Is that weeb? I dunno. But I don’t see any of that in ESO and that’s a good thing I think.
